I really like Daryls work and hope he brings one of his shows to a city near me someday. Philly or DC would be nice.

Ok - heres another then.
He may well be a great guitarist but I also can't abide his covering of the earlier Genesis tracks and FoF in particular.

He just doesn't understand the feel. tongue
Might as well have asked Allan Holdsworth to play for them............... wink

Daryl is an amazing player. I have all his solo albums. Yes its different more on the Jazz side rather then prog but so was Phil drumming when he played with Brand X. His Genesis Rewind project is amazing. I met him at the RARHOF and he was the coolest guy ever. He plans on more touring in the coming year with Genesis Rewind so I am looking foward to seeing him in Philly or NYC.

"sidemen" never seem to be accepted as "official" in any band it seems. either do temporary or sometimes late arriving members. IMO, Mick Taylor was a great member of the Rolling Stones at their absolute musical peak in the early 70's. However, I've seen him at local bars with just a handful of people. Its a shame. I am seeing Daryl twice in the Chicago area this summer. Both are outdoor festivals though and I wonder how many people will really be there for him and not just a day in the park with food & other attractions.

Daryl and Steve are both excellent guitar players in their own right. I think asking who's better is unfair. Both of them keep Genesis alive in their own right. Both have different styles. Daryl is flashier than Steve with his playing. But I think that fits with the Genesis evolution. Steve was the quiet foil to Peter Gabriel. Phil needed some flash-Tony Banks became the quiet one.
But that's just me.

Ah yes, the ol' Firth Of Daryl debate.

I tend to think of something that I once heard Wynton Marsalis say about interpreting classic pieces of music:

"It's not a holy parchment. It's just something you play."

There are a lot of "what would have been?" moments in Genesis' history.

For example, whilst I admire Daryl's jazz-influence, Genesis could have really done something with that if they had adopted him into the band after Steve's departure.

There is only one person who plays like Steve, but many interpretations of his solos. Daryl has his own style, some I like, some I don't. But given that Phil played a lot of jazz stuff in his Brand X days and with songs like Los Endos and Wot Gorilla, I can't help thinking that some of the more recent albums could have done with a bit more of that influence, instead of relying on a relatively plodding bass line as evidenced in songs like Land of Confusion, Living Forever and Way of the World. I just think sometimes if you have the guys around you on tour, you can make use of that energy in the studio, but the guys seemed to want to keep the studio thing as a threesome and they didn't do too badly out of it.

I guess Daryl is quite content to show up once every 12 yeas or so for the latest get-together, along with Chester.

Lots of love for Daryl and Chester, they have been around for decades and I'm sure they helped developing Genesis live act but to me they remain hired guns and I don't mean that in a disparaging way at all. Again their contribution was extremely important but I never thought of them as band members.

Keep the love going for Daryl. At least he is still accessible and out there playing in the Midwest. Perhaps a trip to the Wisconsin State Fair to see him this weekend?

I think Daryl Stuermer is an amazing guitarist.

I also love early Genesis (obviously).

I am also occasionally partial to a bit of jazz fusion.

I just don't always like the combination!
