This section seems awfully empty...

Saw Daryl live last summer in Milwaukee and got to meet him after the show...excellent guitarist and a really nice guy.

I still need to check out some of this guy's solo stuff. I've been so busy with the regular members of Genesis, that I haven't really looked into Daryl's solo music.

Although he is one hell of a guitar player. Not just anyone can successfully fill Steve Hackett's shoes.

I have Go and Steppin' Out, both great places to start.

The interesting thing about Daryl is that he doesn't really "fill" Hackett's shoes per se. They are both amazing guitarists (IMO) with very different sounds and styles, and Daryl's solos are more interpretations of Steve's -- not necessarily better or worse, but different, like one might interpret any musical piece.

Steve Hackett is one of my very favorite musicians, but I am a fan of Daryl's work as well.

I've only heard one of his solo albums - Another Side Of Genesis.

To my ears, absolutely dire tongue
Never looked any further to be honest, that album kinda put me right off.

He might be a really nice, talented bloke for all I know but I hate the way he murders Firth of Fifth!

Never heard it personally, but you're the first person I've encountered who had and didn't care for it. I've mostly heard positive things.

See, to me, it's an interpretation of a piece of music, not intended to be a carbon copy.

Then again, I also like Nick D'Virgilio's Rewiring Genesis album, and a lot of people don't seem to care for those interpretations. Me, I'm always interested in hearing fresh takes of the same music.

Daryl, while not Steve, is a capable guitarist. So he's able to perform Steve Hackett's parts without screwing them up (as a less capable guitarist would.)

I'd rather hear Steve playing FoF, but if it came down to it, I also like to hear Daryl's interpretation.

I see what you mean but FoF has always been sacred to me so I suppose that's why I don't like his interpretation of it. I've never heard Nick D'Virgilio's Rewiring Genesis but I've heard nothing but good praise for it. One day I will be able to comment on that one. smiley

I highly recommend it -- it's very unique and well done. I like it a lot.

To be honest, I only really gained respect for Daryl after hearing a couple of Jean Luc Ponty albums with him on it.
It struck me that his style of playing was much better suited to jazz/fusion than the music produced by Genesis.

Just bought Go off of Itunes. I'm impressed, this is some really great guitar work. He reminds me of Steve Howe's solo stuff, but more electric and jazzy. It's very progressive, too.

"Jazzy" is a good description for Go, and is probably a reason that I like his guitar playing as much as I do. He played a couple tracks from that record live when I saw him in Milwaukee, which was pretty cool. His backing band is very good as well.

Daryl is a pretty great guitarist in my opinion! Has anybody heard about his Daryl Stuermer-Genesis Rewired project? He plays his own interpretations of some Genesis songs and includes a couple of his originals. He got this guy from Canada who looks and sounds a lot like Phil Collins to do vocals. It's a pretty uncanny resemblance! The show includes a medley of Duke's Intro, Firth of Fifth, and Squonk which is awesome! His facebook page has a link to a video of it check it out!
