Wow! Found unconscious in cardiac arrest and brain dead, pulled off life support. I'm really saddened by this. Only 66 years old. Seems our heroes don't live very long.

RIP Tom. You put out some amazing music cry

Well this is a horrible shock. He was touring this year and I considered going to see him as I admire his body of work. Southern Accent is my favourite album of his. Here is a live version of the beautiful title track:

In the midst of confusion, I'm hoping the media reports are premature and that he'll pull through.

I have most of his albums, seen him in concert a couple of times, great songwriter and performer.

It would be a real tragic loss.

Petty has now indeed died. The news picked up that he was hanging on by a thread and reported his death a few hours too early.

I saw him on the tour he did with Bob Dylan back in 1986. The night I went, my hero Mark Knopfler was a special guest; I've got the photo in front of me. RIP Tom. My favourite song of his was always Refugee.

Have got quite a lot of live concerts of his and have been listening to a lot of them this past week. Always put on a great show.

Such sad news

Some performers just play the music regardless of the audience.
But Petty was one of these performers who seemed to have a symbiotic relationship with his fans.
He always came across as very appreciative of those who came out to see him and would respond to the level of enthusiasm of his audience.

The last time I saw him, the audience was particularly raucous, giving standing ovations to almost every song, and singing along to all the hits.
I recall towards the end of Learning of Fly, he stopped singing, the audience carried the chorus and then he added a vocal harmony around it.
It wasn't anything he directed the audience to do, it just sort of happened and it sounded great.

I still get goosebumps thinking about that show.
