I can only posts the ones, I know, which are less, than ten:

Unitopia (finest progressive rock in the vein of Genesis, saw them live a couple of years back, simply stunning)
Midnight Oil
Crowded House
Icehouse
Men At Work
The Bee Gees
Kylie Minogue
ACDC

I also know INXS, but never really got into their music. By the way: does NZ have a single well known band/artist? I wouldn`t be able to name one.

Well, some would argue Crowded House is-Although they were formed in Melbourne and two of the three main members were Australian...
Also Split Enz which contain both Neil and Tim Finn.
More recently, you might know of The Living End and Lorde

Absolutely love Neil Finn & Crowded House etc, but can't say I know other Antipodean artists well enough to say they were my favourites undecided

Was it you or was it me? Or was it he or she?

Quite difficult topic to cope with. Although AC/DC are pretty much Australian, the Young brothers are from Scotland. Former drummer Phil Rudd is a native Australian but lives in NZ.

Dead Can Dance, and maybe a little bit Natalie Imbruglia.

Really hard, even in the lists you all posted so far I was surprised to see how many bands and artists are from down there. I'm quite happy I made it to tell British and North American bands apart, now don't make it too complicated wink

Nice to see this topic. I will start by saying that I have never considered my beloved Bee Gees to be Australian. They may have started their career here but they are British to the core. AC/DC... sort of, but I'm not a fan.

Being female when I first started listening to Australian music I was a teenager & I had 'teenage idol' bands. I was a massive Sherbet fan. Their music was a lot better than they were given credit for, and the keyboardist, Garth Porter, was a disciple of Keith Emerson.

So I might just list my favourite acts in rough chronological order:

Sherbet
Skyhooks
Ted Mulry Gang
Little River Band (the first time I saw the late Glenn Frey live he was a special guest with them, in 1988)
Dragon
Mental As Anything (before they got too poppy)
Cold Chisel
Mdnight Oil

Split Enz/Crowded House are strictly speaking from New Zealand. I never liked INXS exceptf for a handful of songs, same for Icehouse & the Angels. And I have never liked an Australian band after the Oils. I know that's wrong but there you are.

Sherbet Skyhooks and Dragon just missed my list. Sherbet were just a little too pop for my liking. Skyhooks were very tongue in cheek type of band and Dragon were just brilliant. Another band(s) to just miss my top ten were Australian Crawl and Mondo Rock

Oh yes, I love Little River Band too. Again, I'm surprised they are not from North America because they sound completely West Coast.

Australian Crawl did some great songs & their lead singer, James Reyne, has a wonderful live album called One Night In Melbourne which I strongly recommend.

Mondo Rock despite the presence of the great Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool never lived up to their potential in my view. I saw them support Elton John once.

Other bands which were before my time & are worth checking out are the legendary Easybeats, Masters Apprentices & the afore mentioned Daddy Cool. Australia really has a pub rock culture.
