The Making of the Mama Album Video

Wow, some silence in here - sadly, since most of the Genesis music is about the technical end.
I can't help but feel inspired by my first watching of the Making of the Mama album video.
I can't help but wonder why a lot of the little nuancy things like the bass in Silver Rainbow were placed in the back of the track? Even the 5.1 mix doesn't do it justice.
Has anyone ever tried to cover this? I can usually nail the keyboard bits of a Genesis track but guitars are foreign and scary to me.
My point is: These guys have been, and always will be, a better live band. What makes Genesis so different in the studio than live/unedited?

as with most good musicians, the thing that makes the music played good is not because every individual is very good at their instrument and knows their parts (though it really helps!); it's the interplay and magic that happens right there when you set everybody up on the same stage or in the same rehearsal room.
When tracking the album, interplay between all musicians is usually lost as everybody tracks separate (or they start as a group and then overdub everything to great extend).
Especially within the Jazz genre, most performances are better then the record. These records are done within a week, after that the music continues to develop live on stage and every musician is getting more familiar with the songs and the arrangements and by that, discovering new possibilities for their solo's for example.

This is SO true for the rhythm section... after months of playing live, the drummer and the bass player can read each other's mind on a song and really create much better GROOVES than what is captured in the studio.
Not that the lads didn't sound tight in the studio, just tighter after a few months on the road.

Yes it's a certain routine you get. You lock tighter as you play more and more. For example, compare the Rainbow 1977 recording (which is january the 3rd) to the Zurich 1977 recording (which is somewhere in july). After 6 months of playing ever night, the band sounds much tighter and Chester also much more accustomed to the band and it's sound.

A great video of the creative proccess....however, after watching it I now refer to it as the The Sausage Album.

^So much sausages.
I spent a night watching it. I thought it was cute how they fuctioned and kind of came out of there shells. I grabbed a screen shot of sleepy Tony...
It's a good album none the less... *Hate sheild activated* I thought it was great video and I agree with some of the comments.
They should have done that on every album.
