It is very, very good but I know it will not ever break in to my top five.

Like CoT, I prefer the more mellow, dreamy prog on some of their earlier albums but I fully understand their need to evolve their sound and go for the slightly harder more commercial sound and this is certainly translating into album sales which is excellent news.

Watching Felix on that video, they could hardly have avoided being more heavy could they? grin

It's still too early for me to tell if it's a top 5 album yet, but it is definitely excellent. Even better than Banks of Eden, and filled with great melodies and interesting chord changes. The songs are more diverse here, and even though they're shorter they have a lot of dynamic range.

Recommended. smiley

What would your top 5 TFK list look like as of right now? Would UTF be among them?

In my humble opinion, Unfold the Future is perhaps their most mind-expanding work, and I would classify it as a masterpiece. There is so much range and depth to it, plus it's heavier on the jazz fusion element that I love so much. Think I may try listening to it today. cool

Glad to hear you're really enjoying Desolation Rose. smiley How do you rate it compared to BoE? Any favorite tracks in particular?

I find making relatively instant assessments of The Flower Kings' music very difficult.
I am finding this album very rewarding and it is still growing on me.....it's one of my favourites already I must say....at the moment only surpassed by Flower Power.

At the moment, about the same. It's like a darker version of Banks of Eden wink

A good choices! Well, just about any of their stuff would be hard to refute really. laugh

Mine would be a little bit different, but that's part of the fun. smiley

Interesting description! Although musically I think Desolation Rose is actually the brighter and more melodic of the two, in spite of its rather dark and serious lyrics.

Maybe I just need to go back to Banks of Eden to compare again.

Thanks! It's too bad that in the US we're missing so many letters from our words. I much prefer "colour" to "color", for example. grin

Interesting that four of your top five are the famous double albums Nov. I think I'd put those four in my top five too, though which one would be the fifth one I'm not sure. Probably still Adam & Eve, not one of your faves I know, but always one of mine. But really, I could put any of their albums in their when the mood takes me.

My current top five, in order:

Flower Power
Unfold The Future
Stardust We Are
Paradox Hotel
Adam & Eve

But as you know, apart from the top two, all the rest are subject to change, at any moment! grin

In the song Last Carnivore, how cool are those brassy chords that are played during the chorus? It's a subtle thing, but it adds some extra color to the song.

I honestly can't choose a favourite song yet from the album. They're all good, though Tower One is an excellent opener I have to say. There isn't one song that stands out that much, imo. Of course, they're all linked so you could say it's the longest piece of connected music they've done since Garden Of Dreams. cheesy

Hi Carl, for me it's Interstellar Visitations that I love the most. It's the only song that really takes me on a journey of the mind. Great musical passages. Both discs are very good, but disc 2 is the best IMO.

Definitely buy it! Especially at that price wink

There are 4 superb mini-epics on that album and several lovely shorter tracks. It's generally not a top 5 FK album for fans but some have it as their favourite.

Here's a particularly lovely track:

Hi Dave, hope you're both well,
I tend to agree with you - at the moment - I slightly prefer disc 2, it's more immediate, but disc 1 is a definite grower and I like it more each time I play it. Interstellar Visitations could be my favourite too, but there are a few contenders...smiley

I've noticed that one of the songs on the 2nd disc of the forthcoming Transatlantic album is a cover of Yes's And You And I. I'd like TFK to do a couple of Yes covers for the bonus disc on their next album. Which songs do you think they'd do well? I think they could do an excellent version of Turn Of The Century, what do you think?
