Last weekend I played Carpe Diem, a live album that I have sadly neglected for some reason. When I got it, I played it maybe half a dozen times, but for some reason it hardly got a spin after that. Don't know why as it's superb.
It will be interesting to know, in the future, how many prog bands of the day will say they were/are influenced by TFK.
Quite a few I suspect.
The benchmark is there. How many others can reach it?
cool

Gardening yesterday - I hate gardening! It was made more bearable though by the weather(I'm very red today) and the mp3 player. Listened to Space Revolver and Paradox Hotel from start to finish. The amazing quality of the music is relentless. How many killer guitar solos can one man come up with?

There was some discussion on the other thread about really wanting to like music because you feel you should. That can be because someone else keeps telling you. The music press of course like to tell us what we should and shouldn't like. But for me with tfk I really am so bowled over by these 2 albums that I am really prepared to try hard with the other albums.

A few years back I bought Unfold the Future and Stardust we are. Nov commented to the effect that I may gave bitten off more than I could chew. Those 2 albums have still not clicked for me.

A few months ago I listened up UTF disc one and totally enjoyed it from start to finish. thinking I was on roll I went straight to disc 2 and it just didn't move me at all.

My attempts with Stardust have not paid off at all. TSONE is similarly frustrating. Perhaps I should give up but I keep giving it a few months and then trying again. Maybe one day.

Quite enjoy retropolis. But the heights on those 2 albums yesterday are sooooooo high, Roine and the lads are deserving of some effort!

Flower Power is great from beginning to end (both discs). If you've not heard this, be prepared from some mind-blowing psychedelic prog. You'll never think of music in the same light. Also, you must get the DVD "Meet The Flower Kings." Six songs performed in-studio live over 2-1/2 hours. Everything I love about this band is in this DVD.

I've had to get a second job just to cover my TFK habit. Seriously though, all 10 of their albums, (6 single and 4 double), plus the live CDs and DVDs will set you back a bit financially, but what an investement!

Let's also talk about the bands that these guys are in when they're not with TFK - The Tangent, Musical Companion, Kaipa, Transatlantic, Agents Of Mercy, Time Requiem, and the 2 compilation albums (Scanning The Greenhouse and The Road Back Home), plus all the solo efforts by Tomas, Roine and Hasse, including what some believe is the first TFK album, "The Flower King," which is actually Roine's 70+ minute solo effort from 1994, which was the genesis of TFK.

Every item gets a solid positive rating from me, not only for the volume of music they've released in the last 17 years (even further back if you include Roine's wonderful 1970s compositions with Kaipa), but also for the fact that their music helps me transcend to a place where everythings okay and life is good.

Now go spend all your money.............go on! cool

I so hope you will have the chance.

I've seen them 5 or 6 times and it's a thing of wonder watching them re-create their masterpieces live wink

One of the gigs I saw, they played "Devil's Playground" AND "The Truth Will Set You Free" (complete) in the same set. Amazing!!

I still have hope ! One day I know I will get a chance to see them live .Incidentally ,Truth Will Set You Free is the tune that made me a TFK junkie. I wish I would have heard that tune when it was released ,I would have seen them every time they came with in 1000 miles ! cool

Currently playing:

Roine Stolt - Wall Street Voodoo - disc 1

Excellent stuff indeed. It's been ages since I played this. I know Nov likes some, but not all of the stuff on here. For me, I probably enjoy most of it, though I do prefer The Flower King and Hydrophonia, simply because they are prog-based, whereas this is blues based. Very good though.

I like about half of it and it's the only blues album I'll ever need wink

I find it baffling that there's a blues show on Radio 2 and find it equally confusing when you ask someone what music they like and they say "The Blues". I'm like, "so you like the same chord sequence over and over in every single song by every single artist?" grin

I saw The Blues Band not so long ago (plus supporting Genesis in 1982 of course) and got so bored with the same song over and over that I went out to the bar in the second half.

That stuff is fun to play at the start of a band rehearsal for 5 minutes but these guys are professional musicians apparently happy to play the same old thing for two hours, night after night after night. Tedium!

Inspired by this, I've dug out the CD you kindly sent me Carl. Amazing stuff indeed smiley

Well, all those on that tribute CD for a start.

I've been having a nose at the YesFans forum what with the hoo-ha about Yes's poor performances on this summer tour that they are doing with Styx. Unfortunately, there are some pretty scathing comments about most modern prog, including The Flower Kings. If only these people would realise that every Flower Kings album has been better than anything Yes have produced since 1977.

Classic response from a lot of the old guard prog fans. Many still think prog died in the late seventies and that no-one has come along since worthy of the title 'prog kings'. (Which, imo, The Flower Kings undoubtedly are!)
If you played some TFK to an old Yes fan, he or she would say: 'They're just trying to sound like Yes. There's nothing original there.'
Yet, strangely enough, if Yes suddenly brought out an album like Fragile or CTTE again, their fans would be dancing on the ceiling, saying, 'We've been waiting years for something like this!' Even though there would be nothing original there.

Hey Carl,

I was just reading some of your excellent reviews on Prog Archives and then noticed that you hadn't posted or visited there since June 2008. Is there a reason for this? You are the 100th ranked reviewer after all wink

There's another massive Flower Kings thread on their forum as well (127 pages!) and it would be great to see you contributing to this and voting for TFK in the polls as well wink

Here is the Flower Kings thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=54797&PN=1

Everyone else here would be more than welcome as well of course smiley
