The wife and I were watching an evening of very dull television Friday night, so I asked her what concert DVD she'd like to watch.............Less than 2 minutes later it was an evening of Meet The Flower Kings. With our HD television, the screen makes everything look better, so it was like watching MTFK for the first time. These guys are so underappreciated in the music biz.

Roine Stolt's guitar wizardry, Zoltan Csorsz' amazing drumming skills, Tomas Bodin's masterful keyboard playing, Hass Froberg's energy on vocals, Jonas Reingold's tantalizing bass licks, and Daniel Gildenlow's contributions on keys, vocals, drums and guitar make this a must-have in any serious progressive rock fan's collection.

I almost forgot........Hasse Bruniusson's antics and spot-on percussion add lots of fun and excitement to the DVD as well. Two-and-a-half hours of top notch entertainment.

Having just been posting on the Yes thread, it's reminded me how much of an influence they were at times on TFK. Sometimes the likeness between the two is uncanny. That might put some people off, but I like that similarity. If Yes had carried on in that vein just think what they might have accomplished! smiley

For some time I've described TFK to people as a modern-day Yes, in terms of their compositions and general vibe. They use lots of dissonance in their music, and subtle chord and key changes, not to mention the level of sophistication in their music.

They seem to share the most similarities with Yes, but there are of course common threads with Genesis as well (among others). They all came from the same school of music pretty much -- Roine, Hackett and Howe are all musical colleagues in a sense. smiley

I would throw in Frank Zappa as being an influence on Roine's playing as well, both having their own idiosyncratic style to boot.

Ah, see I don't know much by Zappa at all so I have no frame of reference. I've thought about picking up some of his less extreme stuff, but it's hard to tell where to start.

Maybe a "Best Of". cheesy

These albums include great examples of Zappa's guitar style.

Excellent intreview with Hasse here:

http://www.dprp.net/specials/2010_hasse/

And a review of the album here:

http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201054.php#froberg

I noticed that Hasse was on Facebook at the same time as me last night. Something stops me sending a chat message to Hasse, Roine, Tomas, etc though. It's partly that I don't want to bother them but also that I almost don't want that kind of access to guys I really respect - like I feel that there should be the same relationship as there is to guys in Yes, Genesis, etc, etc.

Do you know what I mean?

I saw a guy at CalProg who purchased the new Hasse Froberg CD. He said he'd heard it was very good.

I purchased the Lalle Larsson DVD "Seven Deadly Pieces." It's a performance by chamber orchestra which also includes electric guitar and keyboards (played by Lalle), plus there's a bonus section on the DVD with a performance by Karmakanic. I plan on watching it sometime this week.

Howdy Colin! I don't know of any other official Karmakanic DVD material, but there are a few on YouTube that are pretty damn good.

TWO BLOCKS FROM THE EDGE (with Zoltan on drums)

DO YOU TANGO? (with Nick on drums)
