Speaking of the Cars movie, the route 66 they speak of in the movie, where Radiator Springs is located, that stretch of road runs about 5 miles from where I live. Route 66 is now called Foothill Blvd. Many of the old motels and buildings are still standing from when route 66 was the main road traveled by folks across the U.S.

The Wigwam Motel, which was spoofed in the movie, is still in business and is very popular. All the rooms at the motel are shaped like Indian wigwams. Lots of nostalgia and memories of times gone by are tied to that road. Once the freeway was put in, route 66 became just another road. It does still run all the way west to the ocean in Santa Monica, California. The Cars movie is a favorite of mine because it hits so close to home.

Wow Dave! That is fantastic smiley

I'd never heard of the Wigmam Hotel. It's beautifully referenced in "Cars".

I think it's a wonderful film as well. The people at Pixar are geniuses. Who else could get you to cry (with laughter AND sadness) at the exploits of cars, toys and fish. I love all their films.

Now then, where's "bassman"? I'm worried we've scared him off grin

Okay, I've heard you all talking about The Flower Kings, but I've never (knowingly) heard any of their music.

Curiosity has now got the better of me, so what would you guys recommend I start with?

OK bluegirl, that's the magic question and it's only taken 250 pages to hook you in wink grin

You may or may not know that I've managed to seduce several people on this forum to the delights of The Flower Kings (including 'soldoutfad', 'squonknikki' and 'counting out time') and most of these, especially those mentioned have become absolutely diehard TFK fans.

So young lady, simply pm me your address and I will send you a TFK sampler that will open you up to their magical world wink

grin

Crumbs, that was poetic wasn't it? grin

Joking aside, that's my offer.

Be warned though because within one year (2007), Nikki went bonkers for TFK and bought every single album (10) and DVD (2) and they became her 3rd favourite group of all-time behind Genesis and Rush (but ahead of Yes, Pink Floyd, etc, etc). At the end of that year we all met in London to see them and what a great night that was. Gooner even met one of his heroes, Chris Squire, who was at the gig.

Over to you.......

kiss

Sorry 'bassman' but it's been so long since we had anyone new in this thread that I got a bit excited.

I feel like the cars in "Cars" when someone new approaches their forgotten town grin

Anyway....enough of that!

Welcome to the forum and this thread. What's your TFK story?

thanks fellow TFK fanatics for the warm welcome. My story is this : I got it bad, real bad. I listen to 16hrs of flower Kings set to shuffle in my ear phones daily. I can't tell the difference between records. It's all one long program that I can tap into anytime I choose . Some days I hear all my favorites, other days the music seems like it's brand new.I was so smitten with this music that I choose to study the whole library at once. I hope it lasts for years !
I love Karmakanic ,Tomas Bodine,TransAtlantic, and just discovering Tangent ,Kaipa ,Agents Of Mercy.I like it all.
In Sept. I'm going to Symforce3 to see Karmakanic with Agents Of Mercy !!!! I AM So stoked.
I had 3 or 4 cd's that I didn't connect with before I found Unfold The Future. That record opened my ears. that is the one that made me the Flower King head I am today.
again,thanks. cool

Fantastic!! grin

I do the same thing with TFK! I have the whole lot on shuffle in my car and literally never get tired of them. Occasionally I'll listen to some other bands for a while but the truth is that I've listened to TFK for probably 50% of the time over the last 6 or 7 years.

Dave ('counting out time') is seeing that line-up at Calprog later this year. I was over (from England) in LA for a 2 week course when Calprog was on last year and met up with them. It was excellent. I'd love to be there this year.

Good to see you here man. Have you suddenly just chanced upon this site? There's also a mega Flower Kings thread over on the "official" Genesis site wink

Cheers

Nov

PS Have you seen TFK?

Excellent wink

Just so that I can tailor your TFK introduction CD a bit (coz there's lots of variety in their repertoire) who are your favourite artists apart from Genesis?

Actually, I've just checked who you voted for in the top 3 poll and it was Marillion, IQ and UFO so that gives me a good pointer wink

I'll get on it this weekend......

Cheers

Nov is like a coiled Cobra, isn't he? One sniff of a conquest and he pounces.... laugh

Be warned Bluegirl, he'll inundate you with some of the most amazing music ever written. wink

As for Bassman, he certainly doesn't need converting in any way, shape or form, does he?

It's good to see some new blood on this thread, especially as TFK are going through a quite period at the moment.

Keep it up folks! cheesy

So Bassman, do you actually have a favourite TFK album, and if so, is it Unfold The Future by any chance? That's my second favourite.
And do you play the bass? (Or are you a fishing fanatic? grin)

grin Very true. Well, as a bitter man myself, I can understand that. cheesy
Kipling even mentions it in his famous poem, 'Gungha Din':
"You're a bitter man than I am, Gungha Din!"

Hope I'm not paraphrasing there... undecided

I love the sense of humor here.My favorite one is Unfold The Future, probably because The Truth Will Set you Free blew me away and made me want to hear more...and more... but I also am very fond of Space Revolver,Sum Of No Evil,Paradox ,Rain Maker, I really like them all !
I was turning a friend on to TFK not so long ago ,and it took 4 cd's compiled from 12 records . I couldn't trim my favorites. Every record has excellence . Great band.
I do play bass. I love great music ,and I find it's easier to find a great band with a great bass player than it is to create a great band and be a great bassplayer . cool
