Listening to Paradox Hotel which has slowly turned into one of my favourite TFK albums. I was interested in what others said on prog archives.

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=110

There they rate the albums in this order (as of 11/3/09 as it can change depending on extra ratings given) for all the studio albums.

1. Back In The World Of Adventures 3.96
1. Unfold The Future 3.96
3. Stardust We Are 3.91
4. The Sum Of No Evil 3.89
5. Space Revolver 3.84
6. Flower Power 3.73
7. Retropolis 3.69
8. Paradox Hotel 3.59
9. The Rainmaker 3.50
10. Adam And Eve 3.43

What do you think of these ratings? I am very surprised that Flower Power is not higher and even though TSONE has some good songs on it, I can't believe that it is rated as high. Paradox Hotel is apparantly one the worst rated - shows what i know.

I don't think those ratings are too bad when you consider how many people are reviewing and the fact that there is a small percentage of idiots who give them crap ratings for every album for whatever reason. This really lowers the ratings. Anything upwards of 3.5 is a pretty good I reckon.

Anyway, who cares what they think, it's what you think that matters wink

Here's my personal rating:

1. Space Revolver
2. Flower Power
3. Unfold The Future
4. Stardust We Are
5. Paradox Hotel
6. Back In The World Of Adventures
7. Retropolis
8. The Rainmaker
9. The Sum Of No Evil
10.Adam And Eve 3.43

(and I know I'm right) grin

Well, to be honest, there isn't that big a difference between top and bottom, is there? It just goes to show the consistent quality of the band, that they can turn out album after album and not have a real dud amongst them, nor one single album that pulls away from the rest overall.

My current ratings:

Flower Power
Unfold The Future
Paradox Hotel
Adam & Eve
The Rainmaker
Retropolis
The Sum Of No Evil
Back In The World Of Adventures
Stardust We Are
Space Revolver

But this list can, and does, change frequently! wink

Another thing I notice about TFK is their ability to compose songs in such a way that when the listener has heard a song for the 20th time, there is still something that was missed the previous 19 times that will completely blow you away.

For instance, I was listening to Retropolis, the song, last night and heard one of Roine's lead guitar solos that I swear was not on there any other time I've listened to the album, but of course it had to have been. They're an amazing band that deserves much more recognition than they're getting. Some of Roine's guitar work borders on the genius that was Frank Zappa, and I have heard that he did admire Frank's career as well. Roine seems to have a knack for creating new sounds that keep TFK fresh and vibrant.

How many people on your block would know of TFK if you brought them up in conversation?.....Uh, none, I suspect. Let alone bringing up the name Roine Stolt or Tomas Bodin or Jonas Reingold. But ask that same person what's on their i-POD and you'll hear some of the worst garbage to have ever seen the light of day.

It's an extraordinary thing indeed.

Over the past 5 or 6 years I've probably listened to The Flower Kings as much as every other artist I like all put together. And yet I never tire of listening to them.

Maybe some of the first songs I got into I listen to a bit more sparingly these days but these songs are just as good as the 70s classics to me.

These guys deserve to be millionaires as far as I'm concerned. They have given me more listening (and live) pleasure than any other group over the last 10 years.

Got to agree totally with the last two posts. wink

TFK are in a class of their own when it comes to memorable melodies and 'hidden' bits in their music that suddenly jump out at you. As Dave says, I can listen to various TFK tracks, and very often hear something I never noticed before. This is the mark of real talent.
And, as Dave also says, check out what some people have on their ipods, and you'll discover some absolute rubbish that has been hyped up by radio and other media until the listener actually believes the lie that it's all 'essential' stuff.
It's a crying shame. angry

Hey guys

On the "official" forum, there's a poll to vote for your top 3 artists apart from Genesis.

Can you please pop over there and big "The Flower Kings" up.

Cheers
