Roine's comments on their Loreley festival appearance last week. He's not a happy boy........

Well here's my summing up: (this may all sound like excuses or apologies but it is meant to explain why we played or sounded like we did)

Loreley as a festival is great, I mean the festival site is just spectacular just above the Rhine river in Germany, a classic festival site and quite big too, very beautiful and stage is great too, I didn't look into the sound system and lights much but imagine they are top class. As for The Flowerkings, I personally felt we were rushed onstage and it simply don't work when you have a complicated sound setup like we have.

Technical issues were quite a few:
The amps I've asked for were there, 2 MESA Boogie rectifiers, but for whatever reason they were only running on one channel and that being the distorted channel, for those who are not into amplifiers, let's put it this way, it's like playing the entire Flowerkings repertoire with a deathmetal sound!!!!
Anyway I managed to solve it, kind of, like half of it, to get at least one amp that was clean sound .

For Tomas it was also disturbing elements, he had a cracking noise every time he hit a more bombastic sound or some sweet fat hammond with lows, so imagine he was distracted throughout the set and felt he needed to hold back, but the stagecrew were unable to, or neglected to fix it ..!!??
Another disturbing setback for him was that 2 days before the festival he had his main leadsynth break down and needed to program some temporary sounds on another synth for Loreley gig, but it became no more that temporary and less exciting that the usual stuff .

Another fukkup, the rented drumpad/sampler that we were supposed to use for a few sections in a few songs didn't work with the flashcard we brought, the rented machine, a Roland SPD -s was exactly the same as we have here but it didn't read the card so it was just not working. Doesn't really mean we cannot play the songs, but it surely add some nice sparkling flavours of orchestral sounds and percussion, now these spots were just left blank and it felt like a big hole ....and another distraction.

As for rest of problems I think most of it was down to little or no time to get us a decent monitor sound and for anyone who is familiar with being on stage it is very difficult to play such complicated and delicate music as TFK do if not hearing oneself or the other players/singers. The Monitor guy onstage felt a bit disorganized and we didn't quite get what we asked for and while playing the gig I had problems connecting with him
cause he was more busy looking down into the monitor console that being alert to what the band needed on stage.

Furthermore I heard from Petrus (our PA guy) that the PA was generally in a mess when he started our set and it took him about 20-30 minutes to get all the master and channel EQ's right (not given as much as a minute of soundcheck). Anyone who is familiar with Flowerkings live knows that Petrus is an ace getting us a fabulous sound onstage so this was frustrating for him.

Altogether I fear that this caused us to play a set that was indeed quite OK in terms of playing the songs correct but I felt we couldn't deliver with the power or emotion that the songs ask for to do justice to the band. In the end they also asked us to cut our set and it didn't quite work the way we try to build up and end on a hi note .....

As for the new guys, they played correct but I'd imagine they held back because of the technical problems, bad monitors and it was just correct but not 100% of what they are capable of.

Without putting too much blame on the festival organizers I'd suggest that cutting one or two bands each day would provide for at least 30-45 min line/soundcheck (instead of 15 for chanegover) and getting in order without rush for every band and I imagine the audience AND musicians would appreciate the level of detail & perfection achieved by doing so. It's not realistic to move one band out and another one in, in only 15 minutes, not progrock.

Other than that one might think it's not wise to have the festival on the same week as Burg Herzberg, also in Germany and also with tons of prog, psychedelic and alternative.

As for TFK, Maybe we shouldn't play festivals if we cannot get a decent soundcheck.........worth digesting.

Good thing is, next thing, the 3rivers prog festival in Pittsburgh on Aug 24th, being headliner, we do have much more time to soundcheck etc. so it will be good.

Roine.

I do hope TFK film their next performance. In fact, they should film every performance. You never know when you're going to get that 'special night'.
Have the cameras running, 'just in case'. wink

nice to have some honest, reflective feedback from the Man.

I guess things can go wrong (i see technical issues at almost all the MMEB concerts I see) but to have multilying factors must have been quite distressing especially if there are new band members playing for the first time.

Ever the professional they will no doubt come to the next concert all wound up to impress.

Really great that Roine communicates with his fans, he must be applauded for that. smiley

I second that Colin. Roine is great at communicating with the fans. We are so lucky we live in the age of the internet. It's much easier for fans to stay close to a band, and follow what's happening, sometimes almost on a daily basis.
Of course, not all bands or musicians are as willing to mingle, but Roine can never be accused of that.
He is a DTEG.

I play in a couple of bands and I know how stressful it is setting up and getting a decent sound even if you're the only band playing and you've got a couple of hours to do it in with nowhere near the amount of stuff The Flower Kings have got to consider.

It can't be at all fun trying to play their kind of music without feeling completely relaxed about it. I wouldn't want to be in that situation bashing out the simple stuff that I do let alone TFK's intricate and complex stuff.

Probably before Christmas, unless it's a double, then early in the New Year. grin
I actually hope they do another single album, then spend next year working on a double. Too many doubles spoil us. cheesy

Finally got a copy of Carpe Diem, from Malcolm Parker at GFT-Cylcops. Haven't got round to playing it yet, but I can't hold out much longer! shocked

grin

Malcolm has an offer on at the moment; any three single cds from his catalogue for 20. Or any two double cds for 20.
I also got two Collage albums; Basnie and Changes.
He is selling Carpe Diem for 9.50, if bought on its own. smiley
