OK.
I'm not going to write at length.
Basically I hate tsone. That is why I have stuck away from this thread. It sounds tired to me and far to Retrogressive for a PROG band.

I love Parodox Hotel but tsone has taken away much of my enthusiasm for this band.

What can I do?

Isn't that like someone staying away from a Genesis forum coz they hate Abacab (for example) wink. Just concentrate on all the albums that you do really love.

I know what you mean about TSONE but to say you hate it is a bit strong. I've been listening to it a lot recently and I do have to agree that for some reason it doesn't quite hit the spot and I really can't put my finger on why that is. The only track that really delights me is the last track. It has the melodies and shiver-up-the-spine moments that I love the band for.

The rest of the album sounds great in patches but just doesn't, as I say, hit the spot.

I could never say that I hate it though, although it's one of my least favourite TFK albums. Perhaps we've been spoiled by the brilliance of all the other albums wink

But TFK are regressive. They admit as much.

If you want truly progressive bands then you need to listen to the likes of Radiohead.

UTF is one amazing album. I love every track on it, and it is so varied and unusual.
It makes me laugh when 'critics' say 'all TFK albums sound the same.'
I could listen to any two FK albums at random, and find they were quite different. What they do successfully, and it's a very hard thing to do, is vary their music enough to be interesting, and yet still retain the classic FK sound.
Not many bands do, or can do, that.
As most people on here know, my favourite FK album is Flower Power, but UTF runs it very, very close. I can hardly separate them. Both are superb, classic TFK, and yet very different.
If they'd only released those two albums, they would be prog legends in my mind, and many others.
And if those albums had come out in the early seventies, well, they would be considered the kings of prog, without a doubt.
Damn it, I feel like playing UTF right now, yet it's bedtime. cry
Will have to put it off until the future unfolds. cheesy

Yes, Carl, since their debut in 1995, I believe TFK had, by the time UTF was released in 2002, given us 7 albums with 12 hours worth of top quality progressive rock music, with 3 of the 7 being double albums, the equivalent of 16 conventional vinyl LPs. Truly a magnificent feat.

UTF was also Zoltan Csorsz' debut with the band, and you can certainly feel his jazz background contributing to the 'new' sound of TFK.

Don't forget folks that Roine promised us an album in the same vein as "Stardust We Are" when building up the hype for TSONE. No wonder we felt a bit let down by the fact that not only was it greatly inferior to SWA, but it was also not even as good as their worst, which in my opinion is "Adam and Eve," and as Nov states, you have to admit to yourself that even what you feel to be their worst album has moments of brilliance.

You beat me to it COT...that's what I remember about the 'hype' in the run up to the release - it was allways going to be a 'regressive' release...that's why I firmly believe we got what we were promised! smiley

Oh Steve kiss cry

That's quite sad to hear actually sad
I would agree with what Nov said but also ...........
Get back into the old archived forum, go back to that time when you were really having a mental discovering TFK, getting stuff off I-Tunes like a man possessed, going to see them with Nov and Steph etc etc. In fact read your review of that gig again cos it's brilliant.
In fact the whole thread was brilliant as we know so it's a good read anyway wink
Then go and stick Paradox Hotel on followed which ever other album you loved best back then.
Then come back and see your resident TFK nurse and i'll sign you off as cured grin kiss

Just back from the Rotherham gig and I thought I'd post a few words before bed.

Firstly. If you have a chance to see this band and do not you are STUPID.

They are quite simply one of the finest live bands I have ever seen. GO GO GO Don't wait around. Book your ticket now. Shoo. Do it. NOW. You have to. It's important. It's essential. It's a matter of life and death. DO IT.

Yes I really enjoyed the gig. One of my happiest memories.

The tracks I remember are:

Jealousy
Pioneers of Aviation
Mommy Leave a Light on
Touch My Heaven (about giving up drugs according to the band)
Life will kill you
What if god is alone
Paradox Hotel

I am the sun
The flower King
Psychadelic postcard.

I think Hit me with a hit may have been done but I'm a bit drunk!!!!!huh

Wonderful Wonderful gig. I may write more later.
Over to NOV!!

Steve Ll

Then you did this one almost exactly 12 hours later, when you'd had a chance to really let the gig sink in .......

Posted by: luciusspurius Dec 10 2006, 01:40 PM
So I've had a few hours to let the evening sink in. My thoughts: What a night!!

A short set from John Mitchell as a warm up. Solo acoustic guitar. Unchallenging but lovely to listen to.
Then the Awards Ceremony. A wonderfully warm part of the evening. Carl Palmer was very funny.

The Flower Kings didn't hit the stage until gone 9pm but played a full set. It started with the band ambling on. Roine Stolt then had a little chat with the audience and made a few wise cracks about the awards ceremony. You couln't have a more low key entry and then he said 'on with the music'. And POW. Paradox Hotel. Full rocking version. Perfect volume. Perfect sound quality. Perfect performance. Great start.

I cannot go through the set list track by track but the highlights for me were many. In particular I enjoyed Touch My Heaven-with it's anti drugs message; the absolutely ripping guitar solo at the end of Psychadelic Postcard; What if God is Alone?; Mommy Leave the Light on-which was far far better live than on the album; a totally rocking version of Life Will Kill You: oh yes and I am the sun-my fave fk track of the moment.

The band are wonderful to watch. Roine is so cool it's unbelievable. He seems to emanate an assurance which is far away from arrogance(I think the word I'm looking for is 'cool'. The guy is one of the coolest rock musicians I have seen). Hasse was a full on rock god. Really into it. Jonas on bass was quirky to watch and technically superb. Tomas was very good. A great array of sounds from what looked like a really modest keyboard rig. The drummer was excellent.

It was a rich feast of wonderful melody and jaw dropping musicianship. The beer was great-totally fantastic actually and: No Hangover! And great to see you , Nov and Steph!

A short word about the Classic Rock Society. Support them if you can. Come to some of the gigs. Become a member and enjoy the bimonthly magazine. What I have seen this year has been wonderful. Already have my tickets for the Rotherham Rocks festival with Ray Wilson headlinging Friday and Spocks Beard headlining Saturday.

Signing off, a very happy

Steve

This is the line that you need to eradicate Steve......
Quote:

Look at how enthusiastic you were after the Rotherham gig. Don't let one disappointing album diminish how you felt about the band.

Please undecided wink

We've missed you in this thread Steve and to be honest, I did have a feeling it was something to do with TSONE. Looking back to when PH came out, we were all jabbering about it, but the reality is that we've really not discussed TSONE that much. I think we all probably were a bit (or very, in some cases) disappointed by it. Like I say, it's so strange because it all sounds fantastic but..........I dunno. Even I felt that I couldn't pretend to be over-joyed with TSONE when it came out. Like trying to still love a girl that wasn't quite doing it for you in the same way as she had before. (Crumbs, this is real on-the-couch stuff) grin
Anyway, luckily we had the London gig to get excited about and also Nikki discovering each album, culminating (climaxing?) in "Flower Power".

I'm sure this new line up will bring something fresh and exciting wink

By the way Nikki, I was just about to search for Steve's reviews of the Rotherham gig but can't get into the old forum. Where is it archived?

I'm sure i'll get back in to the flower kings.

tsone just did not do anything for me and i was a bit irritated at how Roine posted about how he wanted to do a retro sounding album and seemed to think this was good. I think I switched off as soon as the bass pedals and mellotron kicked in.

Paradox to me was Flower Kings music not retro sounding Flower Kings music and I still think some of those tracks are superb: musically and conceptually the whole album is very successful.

I have been listening to tfk music but it's been Adam and Eve which I really like. It's got more of a groove to it and seems to be from the heart.

So next tfk album I want a flower kings album and not a copy of Relayer.

Peace and love.
