That last track is my favourite at the moment coz it's the one that is the nearest to what I love most about them. I'm still not getting the shiver-up-the-spine moments from the rest of the album. Like I keep saying, it all actually sounds great as it goes along but isn't quite hitting the ultimate spot for me at the moment. I really can't put my finger on why though. Maybe it's more technical than emotional or something?

Anyway, it'll all be great live wink

Seeya Sunday!

Interesting comments on the new album there Nov.
I think the album is great, but there is something in what you say. It's almost a case of 'prog by numbers' maybe, though it's high class of course. All the songs are well crafted and are typical Flower Kings, but none of them stand out from one another. Maybe the album is a little too even.
As I've commented before, maybe they were playing it a little 'safe' this time, almost MOR prog!
These aren't criticisms however, and I do think the album is very well put together. Compared, say, to Marillion's last new one, Somewhere Else, well, TSONE walks all over that one as far as I'm concerned.
They certainly haven't disappointed me with this one, but I can't see it ever becoming my favourite FK album either.
But then, it would take something rather special to topple Flower Power from the top of my list, so I don't really have any expectations on that front.
The tunes are starting to stick in my mind more and more, especially 'Love is The Only Answer'.
So I am more than happy with it! cheesy

And my little contribution is: Is Adam and Eve Better than TSONE? I'm beginning to think so.

Hi Steve,
And you wouldn't be the only one thinking that!
But then, as you know, Adam & Eve is my third favourite FK album. Are you still suffering from Love Supreme overkill? grin

Nov - I have to confess that I have only managed to listen to the cd a couple of times!!

I DO like it, wouldn't necessarily call myself a fan - yet - but don;t give up hope.

Alas I wouldn;t be able to go Sunday anyway - but never say never eh?

Interesting to read about the ambivalence to the new album so far; there's a mammoth 20-odd page thread on this album on Progressive Ears and the general reception seems to be the same, with a lot of other die-hard fans not getting into the album at all...

I can see the 'prog by numbers' thing as well; the two main bugbears with this band for me in recent years is the songwriting, and the need to have massive epics on most albums- they don't always flow very well, IMHO. The longest one on this album, 'Love Is The Only Answer', I couldn't get into at all at first. It's grown on me a bit now though...My favourite tracks here are 'One More Time', the crazed, fun instrumental of which the name escapes me and the climax to 'Life In Motion' which is a strong emotional moment, IMHO.

My favourites remain the earliest ones. A few fans on that Progressive Ears thread commented that they miss the jazzy instrumentals, and whilst I certainly don't miss stuff like 'Christianopel', I think it was the jazziness in the earliest albums that made them stand out. I really, really like those instrumentals like 'Theme For A Hero', 'The Melting Pot' and 'Don Of The Universe'.

This is from the Flower Kings forum:

What a night of adventures!!!!

I came as usual a bit early and was the first one in the queue. This was 18:30 I think. And then some minutes later a little truck apeared and the whole band was suddenly there, outside, and looked really tired! I think it was Pat who first told the story. They had driven from Uppsala the night before, and around 4 oīclock, the tourbus had hit a moose!!!! The whole frontglass broke, the moose was dead, and the bus was useless! So they drove back (I donīt know how) and got a minibus for the band and crew, and that little truck for all the gear! So when I arrived at Rockefeller, no instruments or anything was up and this was two hours before the how was supposed to start. I asked if they needed any help, and Tomas replayd that they needed all the help they could get. We got all the amps and drums and guitars and keys up. And I stayd inside during the soundcheck. It was cool. I also had to help Tomas finding the keys to the minibus. We looked everywhere for those keys! But the guy who was doing the lights had taken them!

The concert was great, when it first started. Hasse and Jonas where great. Hasse really hit all those high notes. WIGIA was the highlight for me. When Jonas plays, it looks so easy. Man, he knows how to both groove and play so melodic. My favorite bassplayer. Pat playd well. He is a steady drummer, and I liked his playing on the older songs bether that on the new ones. But i must say i missed zoltan a bit on something. But hey, this was differnet and cool to, and you canīt always get everything. I could hear that this was the first concert in while, with many new songs and a new drummer. Everyone did some mistakes, but they just smiled and it was fun. And of course, they where tired. They had not slept very much and hade been attacked by a moose, as Tomas said. There was alot of talking about the poor moose...

SPOILER ALERT!!

Scroll down if you want to see the set-list.....

I think that is all.

Setlist Oslo:
Love is the Only Answer
There is more to this world
trading my soul
retropolis
one more time
babylon
hudson river sirens call
the sum of no reason
half of stardust part three (I dont think this was planned, but wow!!)
life in motion
What if god is alone (Chills!!)
i am the sun (shorter version, i think it was the same as the one on instant delivery)

I think this was all, and i must say it was an amazing setlist, with some songs having extended middle parts with jams, bass solo and stuff. Jonas is a god!!

Overall the performance was well, not as good as i had hoped, but they had a good reason. The bus they drove hit a moose just after leaving uppsala, so the were delayed, and lost a lot of sleep. Roine said he had only slept a half hour the whole night. Tomas said afterwards that this was a very "different" night, and Jonas said the concert was a bit weird.. The played some wrong notes, and forgot some lyrics here and there, and came in late a couple of places, but they worked it out. also, they had start "one more time" two times, beacuse tomas fucked up on the intro..

but all in all, it was a wonderful evening, they played well when they played well, the sound was great and they communicated well with the audience. I also met tomas, jonas and pat after the gig, but i think hasse and roine just went to sleep or something. And hasse was amazing, his vocals were top notch, and pat is a king behind the kit!! sadly, roine and tomas dissapointed me a little bit, they are usually so fantastic, and yesterday they were a mere "brilliant"..

conclusion: Look forward to the shows, i am sure that when they get some sleep and a bit more experience with the new songs, this is gonna be absolutely killer!!

hmm they did not sell out, i dont know how many was there, but it wasn't anywhere near full, but a nice crowd. it was delightful to have some room on a concert for once..

Well I am young, and a free man, yes, but I am not single.. And my girlfriend is the most beautiful girl in the world (just check www.myspace.com/harmophonia if you need proof, she's the vocalist in my band)..
But I am considering going to see TFK at their last concert in sweden at the end of november!!

Thanks Didrik for the review. Glad you enjoyed it.
Seems the band often have unplanned adventures.
Nice to know they are only human though, and still friendly and willing to mix.
A bit like Genesis used to be, in fact, like when strings broke on guitars, or keyboards went out of tune, and Peter had to adlib through the gaps, which is where he began to tell his 'stories'.
This review only makes me admire the band more.

Thanks Didrik.

It's really not surprising that this was not one of their best shows. They must have been absolutely knackered. Poor guys! This music is demanding enough to play when they're on top of their game after a good nights sleep, let alone after crashing into a moose and being up half the night.

They really showed their professionalism by carrying on with the show and giving the best performance they could under the circumstances.

Interesting that you say Pat (the drummer) was pretty good. They haven't been so charitable on the FK forum. Most are saying they really wish Zoltan was behind the kit for this tour.

Cheers
