So I thought it would be a good idea to use up some Tesco vouchers.
So I ordered:
TSONE special edition
Rush snakes and arrows special edition
Riverside Random Eye Movement special edition

The order is ready apart from the riverside part. A bit frustrating but when I get them it's going to be an audio party for quite some time.

Steve, what's the difference with the Rush special edition? Does it have more tracks? Or just the ubiquitious 'enhanced packaging'?

I have had the new album around a week now. It's growing on me every time I play it. I REALLY struggled with the big epic 'Love Is The Only Answer' for a while, finding it to be a complete mess structurally (song structure is an issue I sometimes have with this band) but now, I find it's much more coherent than I initially feared. This might be their most consistent album for some time, without any tracks I don't like very much. Should be a solid 4/5 review from me when I get around to writing about it for Prog Archives (have started at university now though so don't know when that will be...)....

I know what you mean by the structural cohesiveness of TFKs songs, but I've come to the conclusion that Roine, with his 30+ years of writing prog, deserves a bit more respect from me and less criticism.

Everything Roine touches eventually grows on me, and after time I "get" where he's going with it. He's actually quite a complex songwriter, and a treasure for us prog lovers.

The new album is a masterpiece of mammoth proportions. I wish it were a double album, because I want more, but then maybe that would weaken the already great feeling this album emits.

Haven't you guys heard of Record Stores? you're twice my age and still you have to order it on th net.. strange.. or maybe it is just because I am lucky and can find TFK in my nearest record store.. Got the last Special Edition they had, and though I have no idea of how many copies they had, that's a bit cool, seeing as it took about six hours before it was sold out..

over to the music:
It's fantastic!! I have laughed, i have cried, i have banged my head, smiled, and i listen to it as much as i can, probably more than 10 times in a week. And it is still growing on me..

Track one: One More Time, catchy proggy, greatest fretless bass-lines ever in music history, amazing walls of sound, great lyrics and vocals.

Track two, love is the only answer: it took a while before i really loved it, but it may be their greatest epic. i know it's early to say, but it is insane.. won't even try to describe it here..

Track three: slow, ballad-ish, very emotional.. stunning vocals of both Roine and Hasse. Definitely one of their best "under 10 minute-songs"..

Track four: The heaviness strikes you first with this song, it contains maybe the coolest heavy riff from TFK ever. (Yes the de-tuned part from the snippets) After a few listenings ou get a better idea of the diversity of the song, and it has a lot of qualities. great mini-epic. top-notch lyrics

Track five Flight 999 (Brimstone air). how can you not love Zoltan? he beats the hell out of his drums, and all of TFK's quirkyness fits well into this little tune, which fits well into the album. very different, but ery cool

Track Six: Life In Motion: starts out like kind of a pop-ish catchy song, but unveils itslef as a great prog classic. huge, bombastic, majestic ending, a brilliant album closer to the best album i have heard.

I seriously havent been this hung up on a TFK album before, except maybe my Devil's Playground obsession in july..

and the extra videos reveal Zoltan's genius in the end of the short movie..

ok, I have to just point out one think that annoys me a bit, Roine's english.. he says just with the very typical swedish j-sound (like in York).. ah well, details...

Don't forget the second disc songs, all great in their own right. Regarding why we buy stuff online....American record stores suck. There is only one that I frequent, and they even have a PROGRESSIVE ROCK section. Rhino Records in Clairmont, California. They have it all. The only problem is they're about 25 miles from home. When I do go, I spend over $100.

1. The River - http://www.nehrecords.com/Audio/MP3Files/FlowerSum/Disc2/Track%2001%20-%20Split%201.mp3

2. Turn The Stone - http://www.nehrecords.com/Audio/MP3Files/FlowerSum/Disc2/Track%2002%20-%20Split%201.mp3

3. Regal Divers - http://www.nehrecords.com/Audio/MP3Files/FlowerSum/Disc2/Track%2003%20-%20Split%201.mp3

You have exquisite taste, Sir! My favourite FK album, and my second fave album of all time, just behind The Lamb. I love both discs equally.
Pyschedelic Postcard is probably my favourite FK track, full stop. (But how can I go against 'Garden Of Dreams?)
By the way, Colin, I've been playing 'Watch' by MMEB a lot lately. Funnily enough, when I got those cds off you, that was my least fave. Now it's maybe my fave - it's grown on me a lot. Cheers! wink

You know Chessman, my initial problem with The Flower Kings (and I have said it on a number of occasions) is the sheer length of the albums. It's nearly impossible to listen to the album in one session. Flower Power is rapidly becoming my favourite FK album too, now that I have discovered side 2. The same happened with Paradox Hotel (I played side 1 more than side 2)
Never thought I'd moan about the length of an album but I guess that's the problem for me. Crikey the guys are pure masters of producing volume in excellent quality! It just takes a special effort I suppose. I mean, now I play Flower Power I can just about now remember the tracks sound like embarassed

I can really understand why some folk have problems with this band's music. It takes a lot of plays, effort and time, but I can only advise them that the end result is extremely rewarding smiley

Buying CD's on the internet is now a reliable and cheaper way of getting your purchase, until you hit a postal strike that is smiley

Never mind I can listen to Flower Power again smiley grin

yeah well, i must say i order on the net sometimes too, for more rare releases, like going off on one (what an xcellent DVD+cd combo, not sold out on play.com a few weeks ago!!), which i ordered from play.com.. but then i got really pissed off since i had to pay some toll fee or something, which added about 30% to the price.. but the record store usually haswhat i'm looking for of newer releases, but i had to rely on internet for TFK back-catalogue.. but it was worth itsmiley

by the way, TSONE is great!! When listening to it the first time, my girlfriend said she wanted to buy a copy for herself, after getting nearly halfway through Love is the only answer.. and that's the first time she really listened closely to TFK.. Can't blame her!! I think Jonas' fretless playing on One More Time really did the tricksmiley

I have had my CD/DVD copy of The Tangent's "Going Off On One" on back order with amazon.com since sometime in August. They promise a late October delivery, have voluntarily taken away the shipping charges, and the cost to me is a mere $23.99. A great deal, when I see what it's going for elsewhere online.

Great to hear that you like it though. Can't wait! cool

Magnificent! Glad I'm not the only one who rates this album so highly!
Brilliant stuff!
If I could only take three albums on a desert island with me, then Flower Power and The Lamb would be two of them. (Not sure what the third would be, there are so many to choose from!) undecided cheesy
