The best concept album of the last twenty years? Surely that's a bit much?

You did notice the IMO? smiley

Have you heard it, BTW?

I did notice the IMO - I'm just a little surprised. I might well be missing something, hence the interest.

I listened to the Magnus' Children album when it came out. At the time, I never thought it all that exiting, to be honest. However, that was some years ago, and I could well be wrong.

I have Hexameron, myself. It's a fine album, just not earth-shattering. I've posted about "Eminent Victorians" here - I like the song, but (dare I say it) it ain't Firth of Fifth, is it?

In the last 20 years, there's been lots and lots of wonderful albums, many of which can be called "concept albums". Those vary from, say, Marillion's Afraid of Sunlight to The Decemberists' The Hazards of Love. They run the spectrum from Sufjan Stevens's Illinoise to Porcupine Tree's Deadwing (or Fear of a Blank Planet).

And that's not to mention, say, albums by Radiohead, Dream Theater, The Flaming Lips, or a whole host of others.

Given such a range of talent, mentioning Nick Magnus in the manner in which you do just struck me as being, well, surprising.

So - I might well be missing something. And so, I'd not mind hearing a little bit more smiley

It sure ain't, cos the lyrics make sense. grin

One of Children's strengths, the story is so strong and so well told, not all Nick's work of course, Dick Foster is the lyricist, and you can't help wondering how the story and individual songs were born in the collaboration, but I think it works extremely well, and the songs also stand alone well too. Just cos he isn't famous....................

Well, you're right about Firth's lyrics.... Still rather like them, though... smiley

I think I need to give Children another listen.

In any case, thanks for the response. I was genuinely curious!

Can I just you know that the Gift are now taking orders for their sophomore release Land of Shadows. I was fortunate to receive the demo tapes from Mike Morton early last year and its a superb listen. The bands debut Awake and Dreaming is a wonderful listen too.

When it comes to Jethro Tull, there's good and bad news, it seems.

First, the bad news: the group's gone belly-up. But I guess you already knew that, eh? It seems that Anderson is fine doing solo work; there doesn't seem to be any intent on his part to resurrect Tull. Biggles, it seems, is no more.

Then the good news: A Passion Play will be release in a new Steve Wilson mix (stereo and, yes, 5.1) in June. And it seems the release will be accompanied by The Chateau D'Isaster tapes, again remixed by Wilson.

Hurrah!

I suppose it was inevitable that Anderson would retire Tull, due to his flourishing solo career.A bit sad really, had some great times with the band in concert and on record.
Great news about the Wilson remixes. Will be interesting to hear the Chateau album in full.

MORE HURRAH! smiley grin
