A mention should be made of the new Izz album, Crush of Night.

It was released on May 1st, and has just received a whopping 10 out of 10 rating from the DPRP site:

I must admit that I've yet to catch the Izz bug; I have My River Flows (released in 2005) and find it nice enough, but not all that arresting. That's just me, though - clearly I'm missing something.... grin

Cover, you ask? Here it is:

My God, Julian, if you've not heard the IZZ album "The Darkened Room," all I can say is rush out and get it, man! It was released in 2009. I have probably listened to that album more than any other since 2009. I was not aware they had a new album, and I'm hardly surprised that they got a 10/10 rating. Heading to purchase it right now. Thanks for the heads up!

Just came across this piece of news, and it is pretty fascinating -- downright exciting even! grin

Steve Hackett is doing a Genesis Revisited II, and has enlisted some familiar faces (of course) as collaborators.

That is amazing news! I do enjoy listening to (Genesis Revisited I) now and then. Nad Sylvan is very unique as a vocalist and progressive rock musician. I can't wait to hear this when it comes out and possibly even go see the show if it come to a venue close enough. Thanks for sharing! smiley

For those who aren't familiar with Unifaun, their album is magnificent and is a fantastic original release that purposely sounds like all eras of Genesis. Beautiful and highly recommended!

If I understand the recent email I received from 7th Records correctly (not quite a given, I confess), Magma will release a new (mini-)album on June 12th. It'll be called Felicite Thosz (the name of a piece they've played live many times earlier) and it'll be roughly 32 minutes in length.

Here's the site for further information (and audio snippets):

You didn't know cheesy ?

In any case, it'll be some 57 minutes long, and include (just) 4 tracks.

For them as don't know: Anglagard are legendary. They recorded only two albums, Hybris and Epilog, back in the 90's (and a fairly poor live album, again in the 90's). Both were received with - well, amazement, I suppose. They were every prog lover's dream, offering music that was at once melodic, adventurous, and very enigmatic.

Anglagard are Swedish, but don't confuse them with the more well known Swedish bands, such as The Flower Kings or Karmakanic. Compared to Anglagard, those bands (good as they are) seem, well, a little flashy. Anglagard isn't, though; the group is much more introspect.

Will the new album (after some 16 years) live up to expectations? Who knows. For some, however, this is the most anticipated release of the year. (Of course, if Big Big Train were releasing another fully fledged album, I'd be torn....)

________

Edit: somehow, in my original post, I managed to suggest bands such as The Flower Kings and Karmakanic were superficial. Not the right choice of words at all!

From post on official Big Big Train website (7 April 2012)

'A quick update on the mixing. We went into the studio last night to do some snagging and now have mixes of:

East Coast Racer
Uncle Jack
The East Prospect of Winchester from St Giles' Hill
Judas Unrepentant
A Boy in Darkness
The First Rebreather

We reckon we're about halfway there, with another 9 songs to go.

On the way to the studio I bumped into former BBT singer Sean Filkins and had chance for a catch up. Sean's solo album has been picking up excellent reviews and, if you haven't heard it, is well worth checking out:

http://www.seanfilkinsmusic.co.uk/ '

And a query from Sylvain:

'A question I've been wanting to ask for some time: how will you conceive the two volumes of English Electric? Will each record have its own theme or mood, or will you just randomly separate the songs in two groups?'

with my answer:

'We have thought long and hard about this issue. We want both albums to work as separate releases (some people may buy one but not both) and also succeed as a double CD for those who want to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. There are themes and motifs that are shared between both discs but each volume also needs to be able to stand alone. So, track selection has been difficult! Whilst there is a good balance, overall, I think that volume 1 will grab the attention more quickly than volume 2 (which is a little more reflective and quirky.) That's the plan, anyway.'

Thanks for that, Ned.

What I hadn't realised, was that the first album of the English Electric set is going to be released on September 3rd! So it seems we will be having a Big Big Train album this year! (And perhaps even two...?)

Now that Squackett seems to be back a week to 4 June that's 5 albums in 5 weeks. It's like being a teenager again!

Quite cool! Thanks for the news. This one is on my list now, even if it's only a "mini album".

I've been listening to Magma's Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré album lately -- it's very good actually! Not sure why I was so afraid of getting it before. laugh

With new music from The Flower Kings, echolyn, Änglagård, Rush, and now Magma, I feel like a kid in a candy store. grin

Received this mail from Burning Shed:

"The Producers is a new band featuring industry legends Trevor Horn (Buggles, Yes), Lol Creme (10cc), Stephen Lipson and Ash Soan.

Blending Pop, Progressive and Rock influences, Made In Basing Street is the result of five years worth of live work, collaborative writing sessions and, as expected, countless hours of studio tinkering.

This is the limited edition deluxe 2cd edition and comes signed by all band members.

Pre-order now for 11th june 2012 release date."

And if you'd like to see them in action, here you go:

I must admit, I'm quite looking forward to this. It might not be prog, as such, but then again, my favourite album of 2011 was probably Thomas Dolby's A Map of the Floating City.

Oh, and I also ordered this (just to sooth my troubled mind):
