Generally I don't think really obscure bands fit comfortaby within the confines of this thread. They tend to be, well, obscure, and they tend to appeal only to a very few.

I'll make an exception this once, though. It's for a band called Inner Ear Brigade. Their (first) album is called Rainbro, and it was released, I believe, one or two months ago. I mention them because they might well appeal to those who (like me) loved the somewhat wackier side of Canterbury - groups such as National Health, and Hatfield and the North. This sort of music is very rare these days, and if it suddenly pops up out of nowhere, it deserves a mention.

The whole album can currently be streamed at:

http://www.progstreaming.com/

and at their site:

http://innerearbrigade.com/

The music is quirky, fun and quite odd - very much the same sort of thing Canterbury, at its best, was.

Here's a sample (and it's certainly not the best song of the album):

Van Der Graaf Generator will release a new album called ALT on June 25th.

Or rather, not a new album, exactly - it will contain improvs and the like from the A Grounding in Numbers sessions. A bit like the second Present CD, perhaps.

Pretty cool! I thoroughly enjoyed A Grounding In Numbers, but in spite of the difference in compositional style this sounds interesting as well.

You beat me to it, Marygold!

Just so that everyone knows what we're talking about, here's the cover:

The new album will be called XXX. So you might want to Google "Asia XXX". That should provide lots of fun.

As far as I know, Credo are currently writing material for the next studio album. wink Hope that sudden decision of drummer Martin Meads to leave the camp won't be a deadly circumstance for band's perspective...

I know I'll be stepping on some toes here, but I've always considered Asia to be overrated as a progressive rock band. They're more of a power pop group with progressive leanings. Just my views. Don't get all defensive now..........unless of course you really want to.

I agree with your description of the band.
I think to call them overrated, however, suggests they are highly rated among many prog fans whereas I've always painted them as a massive disappointment to those who would have been drawn by names like Steve Howe and John Wetton.

In retrospect, I rather like the first album. I gave them another try when 2008's Phoenix was released - after all, that was the original line-up, all dusted down and ready for action.

I must admit, though, that Phoenix easily made it to the #1 spot on the "most disappointing albums of the year" slot for me. It's not bad, per se - there are some good songs - but overall, it's just too bland. So, unlike Marygold, I'll not "autobuy" this.

Still, XXX is - once more - being slated as their "best" since the eponymous debut, way back in 1982. Well, we'll see smiley .

Is it just me or are Saga not ripping off the Paul Cusick 'Focal Point' front cover?

For me, drummers leaving do not have as significant impact on a band (Nick D'Virgilio of Spocks Beard is the exception as he is also a superb singer) and that Credo will continue producing great music without him.

I thought the same thing when I saw it. Compared to the beautiful artwork on The Human Condition, I find the cover art of 20:20 to be a bit of a letdown personally. undecided
