Re Record Collector Mag:
Just leafed thru' the RC mag in my local Asdsa...
I have to say that I think that RC missed a great opportunity to expand this article...there wasn't even a discography!
For a band with a 30 year career behind them, and a whole lot of interesting tales along the way, I really think that the mag. has really paid lip service here.
I guess Shane submitted an awful lot more to the mag. than was published, and if I were him, I'd be a bit pleased to get an article in there, but on the whole, cheesed off with the allocated amount of space.I'm also tired of the same old photos of Camel whenever they appear in music publications...surely there are more in photo libraries somewhere.
I guess Camel don't sell magazines, but this a "record collector" magazine, and even if not big sellers, there have been some interesting releases from the band along the way, rare picture sleeves, alernative european and south american picture sleeves, hard to find single releases (a copy the the original MCA "Never Let Go" single recently went for 160.00 !!),the "Another Night" single which was unique in that a played 45rpm on one side and 33.1/3rpm on the other...I could go on.
Again well done to Shane for having a go, but come on RC, you could have done better than this!!

Hi mate,

There was indeed a detailed article covering the entire history of Camel and full discography prepared.

I haven't seen the finished printed article...but if what you say is the sum total...its best I stop typing now!!!

Colin Bass and Jan Schelhass were the support for BJH at the weekend. Someone in the crowd asked "how's Andy" to which Colin said "He's well"

Excellent short set by the guys including 2 songs from Jan's solo album and 4 songs from Colin including Drafted and As Far as I can see. The guys got a great reception and apart from those trolls talking through his set - where is a cattle prod when you want one? - they performed superbly. Colin played acoustic guitar and Jan on keys (naturally).

Shane
the article is over 2 pages of the magazine. On the first page, about 3/4 of it is taken up by a photo, "Rain Dances "era, Latimer , Bardens, Ward, Sinclair in a field along with a cow!...you know the one I mean.
Rest of the page and the whole of the second page is text, but although I've not bought RC for several years now, I seem to remember a lot more space allocated to other bands..let's not forget Camel were in the top ten of prog rock on the channnel 4 TV show based on overall record sales and weeks spent in the album charts...there are countless bands who haven't sold as many albums as Camel which have had a lot more space in RC.
I'm really cheesed off by this!

BBC Radio 4 is running a poll of neglected classic books. There's a shortlist of 10 books to choose from and the winning book will be dramatised on Radio 4 next year.

The Snow Goose is one of the choices, so vote for it!

Have to agree that the RC article is very unsatisfying, reads like a long list of lineup changes and releases poorly integrated with some prose. It also states that Andy Ward returned for the Single Factor tour which I think is not correct (he was still convalescing, Stuart Tosh was at the drum kit). I was looking forward to getting some idea of what are the main collector's items but nothing on that score. Whatever Shane supplied I'm sure it would have been much better had they used it directly rather than getting Tim Jones to ghost it rolleyes

I got a copy today - but have yet to compare the two versions. I had corrected Tim's original draft and added further input - but don't know yet if all those edits were included...

Tim's a really nice guy and I know he's been endeavouring to get this article included earlier...without his support the article wouldn't have appeared at all!

OK...just checked and indeed there are some further edits that have been trimmed down from the version that was originally sent back. I guess this is what happens when print space is at a premium!

The error referred to by "alivecamel" a few posts ago may be my fault as I didn't pick this up!! I was jumping on and off 'planes at the time the article was going back and forth for editing...apologies.

Nevertheless, its good to see that a Camel article (albeit not as extensive as some would like) finally make it into print!!

HI Ned...
When I first found out about these gigs, it got me wondering about Colin & Jans relationship...they last played together in Camel on the Nude tour in 1981...had they kept in touch ever since?
Andy Latimer almost played on Jans " Dark Ships"...I got to thinking that with Jan being UK based and with Andy probably no longer wanting to tackle long haul tours, it could be an ideal situation for Jan to participate in any future Camel smale scale performances...I for one would enjoy seeing Jan back in Camel..his synth work was superb!
Or possibly, my theory is absolute bollocks and I am so far off the mark it's not true!
Cheers

No talking b*llocks at all mate, I think that Colin and Jan have stayed in touch and on stage they had a great understanding of each other's talent. Jan certainly has lost none of his skills and some of the lines he played were superb. Just a shame we could not have had more of the guys but with an electric element to ensure that the balance between the softer folk element and the more rock orientated side of Colin and Jan's solo works are equally represented. Highlight was the version of As Far as I can see.

I would love a reunion of the Breathless band with Richard and David Sinclair, Jan, Mel and Andy Ward - what a show that was in 1978.
