Ok Camel fans, be honest now: how would you rate Camel's debut album? Is it worth having? Of course, I'm sure most fans will say yes, but how different is it to the albums that followed it? Does it retain that distinctive Camel sound?
I'm contemplating getting it, but would appreciate a few comments on it first, seeing as I can't download snippets or watch youtube on this old computer.

Cheers folks. smiley

This album has a lot of energy from all the band members playing.. It is one hell of an album and one that gets played often each year like the rest... I would rate this 4/5 grin

My only criticism of their first outing is the quality of the production. Otherwise, this is essential for any Camel fan.

My least favourite Camel album and seldom played, I also seldom play the second album too. Snow Goose in 1975 and onwards saw Camel at their best.

I guess I am in the minority here rolleyes

I seldom play those 2 albums too. I think personally that Camel hadn't quite found their unique sound on the first album, but it does have it's outstanding moments. Especially 'Never let go'. Still a worthy addition to a Camel collection though. Gotta have 'em all really! I just love some of them more than others. smiley

I find there is a real diversity among Camel fans in terms of listing favourites and least favourites.

There seems to be a general consensus that believes Moonmadness and Snow Goose are among the best albums and that The Single Factor is among the worst.

Beyond that, opinions vary widely - so it's really hard to predict whether someone will like a certain Camel album or not.

Personally, I like the first album better than the two releases that followed and better than most of the post-'80s albums so for me, I would say it's essential for any Camel collection.
But again, it seems no two fans are exactly alike.

To be honest, I too seldom play the first two albums. But I still find those albums very good! I guess I will always be a Camel fanboy and an Andy Latimer enthusiast.. I mean, I love THAT man's writing and his emotion and devotion. The first album's highlights for me is Six Ate (Early Latimer composition, fantastic - as always), Slow Yourself Down, Curiosity (Love the guitar solo!) and Arubaluba.

I still have a certain love for all the Camel albums, but a JOY for albums like Dust and Dreams, Harbour of Tears and Rajaz. Nod and A Wink is also great! These albums are really Andy Latimer!!!!

On another note, I really miss the input from Dave Minasian on here...Quite busy........................I hope.......
