I've flicked through some Record Collector mags in my time, but I don't think I've ever purchased one.

This'll be a first! cool

Have the snowgoose/moonmadness/raindances remasters here now. I was particularly interested in the live bonus tracks and have a few thoughts to share.

snowgoose:

BBC In Concert 1975
Performance is OK, recording a bit muddy in places. Nice to hear a good quality live version without strings. Sound is much better than on the "Gods of Light" release and at last this features all the songs performed including "Migration" and "Rhayader Alone" which were editout out from the BBC transcript in order to accommodate the 30 min program limitation. Only airing of that segment was the original BBC In Concert broadcast introduced by Bob Harris whispering on about how snowgoose was his favourite Paul Galico book.

Old Grey Whistle Test 1975
No different really to ripping the Footage DVD, the sound is mono. Seems odd to me that Decca did not need Andrew's permission to include the BBC stuff - Camel's copyright claim would be at least as strong as Universal's.

Moonmadness:

Hammersmith Odeon 1976
The jewel in the crown. At last the full show and in glorious stereo. Complete and remixed from the 24 track master originally recorded with a view to a live album. Sound on this one is very nice indeed, better than the mono moondances DVD and with almost an extra 30 mins. Better even than the bonus songs from the 2002 remasters, they made a nice job of remixing from 24 track. Particularly lovely to hear Air Born live in such great quality. No Mel Collins here of course but probably one of the best performances of the early European leg before going off to conquer the USA. My one gripe is that "Lunar Sea" is on CD1 and not remixed; would have been better to keep it in its proper order and remix from the 24 track

Raindances:

BBC Sight&Sound, Golders Green Hippodrome 1977
HUGE disappointment, they only have the MONO soundtrack and have omitted the non-raindances songs: Rhayader/Goes To Town, Lunar Sea, Never Let Go all of which were superb performances. Also missing is the couple of minutes of the title track that was segued from Lunar Sea (included on the TV show but ommitted from the Radio broadcast). I've heard better versions of these songs - don't throw away your Unevensongs bootleg! Although remastered, Raindances is a single CD and doesn't have the same delux gatefold packaging as snowgoose and moonmadness, hence the cheaper price I guess. What was needed was the complete stereo concert and a proper delux production. In fact I would probably want to return it but for the fact that the postage would cost me more than the 2.98 I paid for the CD, LOL. Oh well, roll on the next remaster in 2020 or whenever.

I have to say the remastered albums themselves sound pretty good too, but I'll need more time to compare with the 2002 remasters and originals to appreciate the differences. The live songs excited me most.

Re the Camel remasters, not sure what I will do. Surprised 'The Snow Goose' and 'Moonmadness' being given this treatment again, when others haven't been done.

From camelogue's thoughts on the albums, the idea of hearing a live recording of 'Air Born' excites me the most.

On reflection, think I'll get the deluxe 'Moonmadness'. Worth it for the 76 show. smiley

Played some Camel over the last couple of days, and now I think I'll try to put the ones I've got in some kind of order, so, here's how I rate them:

1. SnowGoose
2. Moonmadness
3. Dust And Dreams
4. Mirage
5. Nod And A Wink
6. Harbour Of Tears

I like all of them, and the order will undoubtedly change round a few more times yet, but I suspect SnowGoose will remain my number one for some time. cheesy
