Camel…10th/11th March 2014.

So, it’s Monday afternoon in Birmingham. I’ve parked the car and now trying to get my bearings…I can’t quite remember how to get to the venue. After going the wrong way, I eventually find the Town Hall...you can’t miss it really!
Pop into the venue to use the loo and find Flick manning the merch. stand, waiting for the onslaught later. Have a chat to her for a while, thanking her for posting the tour blog, then make my way to a pub (where else!) to meet Graham Burnell & his partner Tracy, his mate Mark and his girlfriend, and Pete & Julie Timney with the ever-present Ali the zebra. I could murder a few beers but I’m driving to Cambridge after the gig so I stick to a solitary shandy. After half an hour of catching up we get over to the venue and take our seat…front row, fantastic, but the stage is very high. Nevertheless a great position to see the goings on ..Tons keyboards’ (although I understand they belong to Andy, as does the drum kit) are right in front of me with Andy’s gear about 3 feet to my left. Fabulous seats obtained for me by a lovely bloke, Steve Hammond, a real gent who got me tickets on a pre-sale as he was a member of the Town Hall. Had a chat to the chap next to me, one Andy Reed who had seen last nights show in Sheffield and was back for more. So, lights go down, Andy & co. get a great reception then you can hear a pin drop as the sound of marsh birds and Ton’s keys kick off the set. Andy has only got the one electric on stage with him tonight, a Burny, and only one amp. As the lights come up, you see a little sign on the amp stating “ We Welcome Your Feedback”!, obviously picked up from some hotel or bar. The band seem relaxed and it’s obvious that Ton has settled in well following the first night nerves back in Amsterdam. A lot of the lighting sits atop column like trusses that span the stage, and I have to say that the lighting both at this gig, and the following night is stunning…all changes are right on cue and give the right atmospheric effects to the music…the glitterball effects in “Dunkirk” are particularly noticeable. A word too about the sound... and “immaculate” is the word I would use. You can hear everything quite clearly...it’s simply gorgeous.
However on one of the quieter pieces, there seems to be one or two shrieks from the monitors which quite obviously doesn’t delight Andy, and he glares towards the side of the stage. He seems to be in quite a lot of pain with his hands too, as he frequently is rubbing them or trying to massage them. But his playing is simply fabulous with great fluidity and inventiveness in his solos as he pushes the boundaries as much as he is able. Up close you can make out the slight difference in his hand shapes when playing, compared to previous tours…he has stated he has had to relearn how to play, or change his style of play due to his arthritic hands. But blimey, he was on form tonight and seemed to be loving it...I don’t think the grin left his face! No changes in the set list tonight, but during “Bobbins” I start hearing banjos!. No, I’m not dreaming! I though it was coming from Ton, but I was put right by Jason the following night when I mentioned it. Jason plays I think, a combination of Clavinet & Dulcimer sounds, to get the banjo effect. Andy had wanted a more folky feel to the track, and boy oh boy did it work a treat…it was superb and I would love to hear a decent recording of that. Colins basses were again, clear and punchy and Denis gave his usual energetic performance. On "Lady Fantasy"Andy gets really close to the sustained feedback but it dies off at the last moment. A wonderful gig. Managed to take some photos, although not great quality and upload them on the FB photo page. Also managed to get Andy’s second half set list from one of the crew. Didn’t hang around for the meet & greet but said a quick goodbye to Flick as I left, who was now inundated with fans wanting to part with cash!

So, now it’s 1.30pm in Cambridge the following day. I’ve checked in to my accommodation, and having never been to Cambridge before was looking forward to doing a bit of sightseeing before meeting up with Graham, Peter & Julie (& Ali) once again..So I’m walking down a back street and there’s a familiar figure strolling towards me. “Afternoon Guvnor” I call out and Mr Bass grins and says “Hello Peter!” We stop and have a chat…he’s been buying guitar picks from a market stall amongst other things. We then go our separate ways, and it’s not too long before I see another figures eating an enormous Ice Cream in the beautiful sunshine. This time it’s Simon, Camel’s back line tech. and we have a brief chat. He toddles off and I walk around Cambridge admiring the town and trying to find the venue in order to get my bearings for later. I find the venue an hour or so later and as I walk around the corner, here’s Colin Again. “Found It” I say, he laughs and says “see you later!”. The Tour bus is parked round in a side street and I spot Emma (Tour Manager) taking her suitcase into the venue chatting on her phone.
Pete & Julie also bumped into Anday Lat. whilst walking around the town,
Meet up with others before the gig for food and beer ( yes, no driving tonight!) before ambling over to the Corn Exchange. What a lovely place. Collect the ticket from the box office where I meet up with James Envison (yet again…he’s doing 9 out of 14 dates this time round and he’s notched up over 50 Camel gigs…fair play to him!). I also meet Peter Beasley for the first time following several years of chatting over the ‘net or on email. There are other familiar faces I recognise from other gigs…we’re certainly a loyal bunch!!!
Said hello again and chatted to Flick and noticed a keyboard on the merch. Stand. I assume that this was Andy’s broken keyboard that they’d decided to sell on the stand!!!

Got a beer in a plastic glass that you can take into the venue and took my seat 3 rows back, directly in front of Andy. Fantastic view!... I’ve been really lucky on this tour seat wise!
I look around to see if I recognise anyone else, saw James a few seats away from me, but there’s something familiar about the bloke sat 2 seats from me. Jason later explained that it was Stephen Wilson, whom Jason had invited to the gig.
I really know nothing about him, although I guess that could be seen as blasphemy in prog-rock circles!. Jason is a big fan however.
As Camel start’s the Goose, someone shouts out “Ice”!...Andy grins…how many times has he heard that request on this tour? The Snow Goose is magnificent, really atmospheric…when they get to “Fritha Alone”, Ton plays a slightly improvised version which is lovely in feel. Then as the final “Great Marsh” starts, someone again calls out for “Ice”. The timing of the call is entirely inappropriate and spoils the mood for me a little.
But once again a storming gig...lights, sound, spirit & musicianship all second to none...the band has found it’s form now with Ton, and they really are top notch. The Goose has now been despatched once again so time for another beer methinks. I spot a familiar figure who has been operating a pro. looking HD video camera positioned at the mixing desk. “Hello Misses” , I say and Susan turns round, and recognises me with a kiss and a big hug. Saw her only fleetingly at gigs last year so it was lovely to spend a bit of time with a catch up chat. She has been filming the gig, presumably for personal use.

Second half, all fantastic stuff and “The Hour Candle” is once again dedicated to Guy (and a young lady whose name escapes me)…Andy again plays wonderfully and I find myself thinking about Guy and how great it would be to see him recovered and back with the band. Then a slight change in the set as a revived “Tell Me” makes an appearance, and is very well received. It’s only then I really notice that Andy has been using 3 electrics for this gig…the red strat which he used in most of the Goose, and 2 others, plus his acoustic. The second amp is also back on stage. There is nothing quite like the sound of live Camel, and when the sound is this good, well, you just don’t want it to end. Two guys in the front went wild in “Lady Fantasy”, with some fine idiot dancing, the likes of which I’d not seen since 1976!

After the gig, the band all came out, as is the custom now (you don’t get many other bands doing this, and Camel really seem to respect their fanbase and enjoy the interactions) I manage to get all the band to sign the setlist from last night, and I get a chance to chat to all the band, getting photos taken with them, then having another, longer chat with Susan & Emma. It was also very nice to meet with Richard & Charlotte who I recognised from standing out in the cold for an hour to meet the band last year in Wolverhampton, and also I had the pleasure of meeting Baris Dai who had come from Turkey for the gig…wonderful!!!

Once again a fantastic couple of days, and I’m sad not to be going to any more shows but thankful I was able to attend these. Back to sunny South Wales for me, not Portugal, Spain or Italy (sob). Peter, Julie and the much travelled stuffed zebra (who was actually removed from the balcony at Birmingham under instructions from a steward ) are off to Italy for the final date. Enjoy yourselves you lucky sods!!!!
If you are still yet to see the band, you will have a wonderful time.

Over & Out!!

Nice write-up Riverman. Did 'Tell me' replace 'Drafted'? Funny, because at Sheffield I was saying to Colin how I enjoyed his singing on 'Tell me'. Pity I wasn't there to hear it, but as I said to him, it's on the DVD anyway!

A second try:

I collect Camel concert ticket stubs and am interested in new ones for my collection especially Wolverhampton, Salisbury and Manchester 2013 and ones from the 2014 leg of the tour.
If there is somebody out there who has doubles or wants to get rid of them please get in touch.
I'm willing to buy or to trade. I have some doubles as Scheeßel 1977 or Hamburg 1977.
Thank you very much in advance

All the best

I don't have those, but do have a spare Harrogate ticket which is totally intact, as it wasn't used. Send me a PM if you're interested.

And the Camel tour 2014 ended... In Italy. I already miss them so much. The world is now much more grey. I look back on the 2013 and 2014 tours with love and light and here's hoping that Andy will return to the stage in the future. And here's hoping for a new Camel album too.. But most of all, I'm so happy to have Andy Latimer back! I'm sending him all my love and best wishes for his knee operation that will take place soon. On these tours the Gods made love...! Magic!!!
