Okay, I'm sure it'll be a great song. smiley I'm not too fond of the song name though. Ligging? Is that word? huh And "at Louis". Is Louis a place? A person? I know it's trivial but song names like this boggle the mind. And because there are no lyrics, it's impossible to imagine a scenario during the song. undecided

Just a case of doing a bit of research NSOV wink

I suppose it is rather a 70s term and you're quite a young 'un so we'll let you off wink

"Ligging" = another word for gigging or, if you prefer, playing live

"at" = at grin

"Louis" = either St Louis (a large city in Missouri, USA) or a club called "Louis"

So, the song title just means:

Playing a gig in St Louis

or

Playing a gig at Louis' Club

OK?

He did write it wink

No, 'ligging' means going to an event or function to take advantage of free refreshments. It was a verb used by musicians relating to attending after gig parties, night clubs, album launches, etc.

Therefore 'Louis' (I haven't checked my CD/LP of 'A Live Record' to see if there's an apostrophe in the right place) would be a club or venue to fit in with the 'at' in the title.

So the title of the song means 'Getting/Got free drink and food at Louis' (night club)'.

Have any of you guys seen Camel live?

I've been lucky enough to see them a few times from 1979 onwards.

Favourites of these would be the Nude shows at Hammersmith Odeon and also the Harbour of Tears show at The Astoria.

Can you share you memories of the Nude shows, or The Single Factor shows? Band dynamics / energy? Kit Watkins? David Paton?

I've always thought it's a shame there are no live video recordings of the band from the period between Breathless up to The Single Factor.

I don't think I can remember anything too specific but I'll list the concerts I went to (Camel and solo) and any particular memories.

1. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - October 11th 1979
2nd row right in the middle. I was very excited to be seeing my second favourite band (after Genesis) for the very first time. The Odeon was very sparsely populated - in fact, a review in (I think) Melody Maker the following week said "at the first of Camel's 2-night stint at Hammersmith Odeon last week, there were enough wide-open spaces in which to hunt bear" grin

2. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - October 12th 1979
Similar (excellent) seats and a much bigger crowd. very similar set as the night before including lots from the latest album (ICSYHFH) a big chunk from The Snowgoose and other assorted classics.

3. Peter Bardens - The Venue, Victoria - February 8th 1980
Lots of tracks from his solo album at the time plus covers such as Green Onions. A great night!

4. Peter Barden's Moles - Fulham Greyhound - August 5th 1980
Similar set to the Venue gig from what I can remember. In a much grungier venue though grin

5. Camel - Bristol Colston Hall - February 23rd 1981
The first of my 'Nude' shows. A packed hall and a fabulous album played in it's entirety in the second half. Fantastic!

6. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - February 27th 1981
Nude obviously revived Camel's popularity after the failed attempt to go more commercial with ICSYHFH. The Odeon is packed to the rafters and the reactions get louder and longer as Nude is played ending in an emotional standing ovation at the end. My favourite ever Camel concert.

7. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - April 2nd 1981
A second (sold out) show added due to the popularity of the February gig. Camel are well and truly back and it's another fantastic night. Camel were elevated to joint fave band with Genesis with the Nude album and tour.

8. Camel - Guildford Civic Hall - May 24th 1982
I wasn't too enamoured with the album but it was a standing show in a packed hall and another very enjoyable concert with lots of friends there.

9. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - June 3rd 1982
Exactly the same seat is gig (2) I've just noticed smiley Similar set to Guildford but can't remember too much. Not as good as the Nude shows.

10. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - June 4th 1982
Again - can't remember anything specific but still obviously enjoyable.

11. Camel - Hammersmith Odeon - May 5th 1984
I think this show was being filmed. I wasn't overly enamoured with the album at the time but, again, a good show and, again, sold out.

Fast forward to.........

12. Camel - The London Astoria - April 13th 1997
I skipped the Dust & Dreams album/tour for some reason. After the long gap, I'd kind of lost interest in Camel and it was hard to get my Camel mojo back. However, Harbour of Tears was (is) a superb album and I ventured off to London to see them for old times sake. It was most gratifying to see the queue of fans outside the venue and the concert was truly wonderful with the whole HoT album played beautifully. Their best shows were always on the back of a concept album I decided wink

13. Camel - The Junction, Cambridge - October 4th 2000
We moved up to Cambridgeshire in 2000 and it was great to see Camel playing so near in this excellent venue. Would this have been the Rajaz tour? Excellent album and a lovely show in a stand-up venue - often a lot better for atmosphere.

14. Camel - The London Astoria - October 6th 2000
I can't remember too much about this one except that it was another excellent crowd in for the band.

15. Camel - The London Astoria - October 28th 2003
I've just realised that this was bang on my 8th Wedding Anniversary so it must have been the farewell show to be important enough to get special permission from my good lady. However, this was my least favourite Camel gig. By this time I was regularly seeing the likes of Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings and Transatlantic who were new dynamic prog rock bands (at the time) and just more exciting to me than Camel. I remember really dis-liking the sounds the keyboard player was using on such classics as Lady Fantasy. Plus, Andy was obviously not too well by then and it was amazing he was able to play at all. This made it very emotional but musically it was very disappointing.

I hope to see Camel one more time to banish the memory of that last gig but if not, there were many more fantastic memories from the previous shows.

LONG LIVE CAMEL!!
