Because Andrew Latimer had a bone marrow transplant a few years ago and is still recovering. From what we've heard he still plays and writes music though.

Those were pre Internet days and you only found out about tours from Sounds or NME, often too late in my case as I used to beg old copies off mates. grin

Transport was often a problem too. sad

Yes, he was very ill and it's great to hear that he is working again but Camel were never nippy when it came to releasing albums. Well, post 1982 anyway grin

Yes, you had to get NME and Sounds, but it was well worth it! smiley

Tell me about transport problems...I've never driven to a gig myself and don't drive now. rolleyes

What about 1984? Only a 2 year gap. Quality over quantity I say! smiley

Curious, how many times have you seen Camel live? Your first and last concert, memories etc?

Me? Oh, I only had my luck in 2000 and 2003. London both times. Both gigs were totally smashing and it truly was a privilege to see Mr. Latimer in all his glory. Something I'll never forget!

What about you? smiley

First gig was Leicester, late 1979, had just heard A Live Record and liked it so much I made a late booking at the back of the hall. Really nice drum loop intro tape exploding into Echoes ... I was completely hooked.

Next up was the Nude tour and got in early enough to grab a seat in the first few rows at Leicester. Loved the new album and great arrangements of old songs, Andy Ward put in a blistering manic performance.

Just had to go twice to the Single Factor, London + hometown gig at Leicester. Brother went to the venue early and made friends with the doorman; they got on so well he agreed to meet us and take us backstage after the gig. Got my prog signed by all the band, but was really too young and awestruck to make the best of it.

Missed ST due to exams cry

Missed D&D as it was all over before I found out cry cry

Saw Harbour in London we decided it was one of the best prog gigs (material and performance) we'd seen. Stood at the back with some guy called Ant Philips, wish I'd dived down the front instead (sorry Ant wink )

Rajaz were the best: Leicester at this little pub and the supreme show at Sheffield Leadmill. Both standing gigs, queued with a host of other fans to get down the front. Brother went to park the car while I saved a place in the queue ... took him ages, as the doors were opened he appeared over the horizon.

Had to go 3 times for the Farewell: Milton Keynes, London, Sheffield. MK Stables a superb venue with good seats and acoustics everywhere, pure relaxation. London Astoria in contrast absolutely stuffed shoulder-to-shoulder like sardines. Venue was at breaking point, and so hot - lucky there was no fire. Great gig, though Andy looked a little unwell. Sheffield v emotional. Crowd sang so loud for Drafted that Colin gave us the mic. Only time I've ever attended a show where the audience forced the band back on stage after the house lights had been activated. 10 or 15 mins solid cheering was followed by a second rendition of Lady Fantasy. Spoke to Ton afterwards (wasn't happy with the mix, drums too loud) . Spoke to Denis, said he begged Andy to encore with Lunar Sea but Andy insisted it would be under rehearsed.

Miss them so much, but the music will last forever and that's pretty damn good consolation grin

Thanks alot for your reply, Alivecamel. A very nice read indeed. Well, I miss them too very much. Let's hope that in the future Andy will be in such a fit state that perhaps one or two shows would be possible. In fact, just about anything Camel would do now smiley

Indeed Sahara_sunset, we can live in hope. There was the false alarm a few of years back when Andy thought he might be OK for the High Voltage festival so we know he would be open to playing live again health and opportunity permitting.

Oh yeah, just wanted to say, a heard the album "Breathless" again recently and I must say, just like D&O mentioned, the awesome opening to "Down on the Farm" does not match the song which follows. I see his point - they attached a great opening to a good but rather silly song and it doesn't work too well. sad

I didn't mind at first, but now I find the intro catchy. It's just a shame they couldn't have put it on a more rockier, epic piece.

I've always thought that they made this contrast (between the opening and the song itself) on purpose. The opening is like a parody on out-and-out rock, and then it turns all the way around to this jolly children-like song.

Yeah, I don't have any problem with it. Just a fun song! More Richard Sinclair style than Camel anyway.
