The Snow Goose on 'A Live Record' is far superior to the studio version, in my opinion.

As for the lack of vocals, Camel have certainly always been stronger on the instrumental side than they've ever been on singing.

Not that I would have the band any other way, I'm just saying.... wink

To appreciate 'The Snow Goose' fully, you really need to have heard it live in its entirety, preferably on one of the performances BEFORE the album was released. I was lucky enough to be at one of those pre-release gigs (Croydon Greyhound) and it was a magical evening. It was clear that Camel had created something very special and very different to the first two albums. That's a true progressive band.

If you don't like 'The Snow Goose' because of its lack of vocals, maybe you'd prefer the Spike Milligan/Ed Welch version.

Well, for me ' The Snow Goose ' was the first album of Camel's I heard, and I just instantly loved the title track. The guitar on there is SO special and doesn't need singing to convey it's message. It's just pure magic! smiley

Hi All....

Extract from a recent Ton Scherpenzeel interview in
DPRP...magazine, kindly posted on the roadkill mailing list....http://www.dprp.net/wp/interviews/?page_id=1862

not sure it fits well with other "news" as previously reported on this forum......, but.......!!!

Camel content.....

"Menno: How do you look back to those late eighties? Did you feel comfortable in that band? Did you feel the material you wrote was okay?

Ton: Oh it was quite okay! I had fun writing songs for that album and I still think some of the songs are quite good and we could perform them with Kayak very well. On the other hand of course my role within Earth & Fire was not the same as my role in Kayak. For instance the songs that I wrote were subjects to debate: quite different from Kayak! A bit the same situation applies to Camel: of course Iím not Camel, Andy is. He is the main man, he determines what will be the musical direction of the band. As a writer I hardly contributed but it has been an honor to play in that band. I understand perfectly what it feels like when youíre Ďjust a followerí, but I can tell you the members of Kayak were never happier! Maybe itís because of what happened, but they feel quite comfortable with me being in charge, organizing, writing and so on. Weíre all happy weíre able to play again. Everyone plays her or his role in the band and feels content about this. Thereís a lot of energy on stage and weíre very enthusiastic about the developments so far. The fans who still come out to see us, itís amazing in spite of all the changes in the line ups. Iím the only one left now from the early days, Edward joined some eight years after that but the others never knew the band at all! They heard most of the songs we play live for the first time during a rehearsal. It was the same for me when I joined Camel: I had to learn practically all the stuff because I only knew about three songs! It feels like a gift from heaven that weíre still able to do what we like most: performing live and have fun, all those weekends feel like short holidaysÖ"

"Menno: In the past you have been involved with Camel. There are rumors something is about to happen: do you have any information on Andy Latimerís condition?

Ton: Every once in a while we ďskypeĒ and I know that he is writing and planning, but I donít think itíll happen soon because heís not in a hurry anymore. It might be related to his health issues but in my opinion it could be about being motivated enough as well. When you have been ill for such a long time I think itís difficult to push yourself really hard. I know he plays here and there as a guest and I believe heís recording demoís now & then, but it doesnít seem like heís planning a new album just yet. Andy knows he can call on my if he wants to record or play live. I know for sure he doesnít like the organizing side of touring: he felt it was a terrible burden the last time I toured with him. Constantly coughing, not in control over his voice and a lot of stress. It would surprise me if Andy undertakes anything, as far as performing live is concerned, that would last more than just a few days in a row. Anyway: Iím not aware of any specific plans of Andyís."

I can now play the remarkable Moonmadness album opener "Aristillus" on the keyboard! grin cool It's very easy so it's not too big an accomplishment, but being able to play it is fun. grin

Awww shucks. smiley I do really enjoy playing the keyboard, it's been my instrument for five or six years now. I love playing it so much that it's like a drug to me. lipsrsealed grin Just the sweet feeling of hitting those keys and improvising, or playing along to great music, is always such a joy.

Aristillus is a song I very much love and because it's simple, it's easy to learn, and fun to learn too. Of course, my genre is progressive rock, and the more of it I hear, the more ideas I have for my own work, and the easier it becomes to play my favourite prog songs. cool grin

As a new fan seven or eight years ago, I slowly started buying up their albums, guided by the recommendations of others.
The albums I left for last were the ones I had the most hesitation about because they had received mixed reviews from fans, some people downright disliked them.

As it turned out, I felt none of the disparaged albums were as bad as some people had suggested.
In fact, a couple of them made very favourable, lasting impressions on me.

ICSYHFH was like a drug for me, I just had to keep listening to it for some reason. To this day, itís among the ones I listen to the most. I sort of think of it as being in my top 3. Some people only like one song, I like the entire album.

The other disparaged album that made a significant impact on me was Breathless. Again, I was anticipating the worst but ended up really enjoying the album. In fact, it reaffirmed an impression I had listening to Rain Dances, and that was that I really liked the voice of Richard Sinclair.
This was my springboard to check out another band with Richard Sinclair which I have since really come to love and thatís Caravan.

If you really like what you've been hearing, I wouldnít hold back on exploring any of Camelís albums because music is always a personal journey.
Some things other people donít like may have a completely different impact on you.

Which Camel albums have you already got NSOV? Just curious why you're choosing those 2 albums in particular.

That's true and I know what you mean. Sometimes getting albums that are a bit out of character for a band can put you off listening to more though.
