Strangely enough, I'm usually disappointed when prog bands take a commercial-sounding turn, but I really like Camel's so-called poppier albums, Breathless, ICSYHFH and Stationary Traveller.

That's a good point. Just because a prog band ventures into a more commercial or poppier territory doesn't necessarily mean it's of lesser value. Camel flirted with a poppier influence for several years, then after their long hiatus returned with their prog credentials intact with the magnificent quartet of CP releases. Some prog bands ventured into pop .... and stayed there.

There's been several crossroads where Camel have lost some fans but gained new ones. Headbangers who frequented the early gigs and bought the first two albums were disappointed by the absence of hard rock on 'The Snow Goose' whilst the jazz and Canterbury influences of the mid-period also caused some to lose interest. And I'm sure that some think 'The Single Factor' should've been called 'The Final Straw' because of it's overt commercial leanings, the absence of a proper band line-up and no Andy Ward.

The fact that Camel has entertained these various changes and still retain respect and loving as well as appealing to a new generation of fans makes them truly 'progressive'.

It's a risky business going down the commercial route though. Can lose fans and can gain fans.

First of all I am a big fan of both The Single Factor and Stationary Traveller.
That said, I must say that I cannot figure out why most people (who enjoy Camel's later eras) seem to like Stationary Traveller but not The Single Factor.

Surely soundwise The Single Factor is less "80s" sounding - both drums and synths. And yes, they both have a few "commercial" tunes, but also a few gems. So... why?

Don't know really. I listen to ' Stationary Traveller ' more though, or maybe I should say some of it. I often just listen to fave tracks of albums. The title track is sheer brilliance! smiley

Two reasons for me: firstly ST hangs together much better because of the brilliantly executed concept/story; secondly that the quality of the songwriting is better on ST in my opinion.

ST has many great hightlights, to mention a few:
Pressure Points - incredible opener
Vopos - haunting melody, very atmospheric
Fingertips - great ballad, one of Andy's best songs
Stationary Traveller - jawdropping guitar solo
Long Goodbyes - moving finale, great concert closer

In contrast I feel Single Factor is a collection of individual songs (ironic given the title!) which are pleasant enough but not on the same level - only Sasquatch strikes me as a standout classic.

I thought it was a bargain when I bought it for about 4.99, but 2.99 is unbelievable value for over two and a half hours worth. cool Of course if you own most of the studio albums, it's not worth buying. But as a starting point for Camel it's fantastic. smiley
