I was only stating my own opinion as Camel is one of my fave bands ever but there are at least 2 albums I can't bear to listen too...1 in particular but if you enjoy it then great...just to put the record straight I wasn't referring at all to The Snow Goose and Moonmadness as they are 2 of my fave albums ever.

You want to have another guess as to which album(s) I'm referring to?... cool

Breathless & I Can See Your House From Here?

Not that I think they are stinkers. I love them! My choice for the stinkers are Harbour Of Tears & A Nod And A Wink..... rolleyes

It just goes to show doesn't it...how we all have different tastes as I adore ANANW and think HOT is pretty good too....As for my stinkers well you were half way there Breathless and The Single Factor are the ones I can't stomach...and yes I'm not that fussed on ICSYHFH either...it's only Hymn to Her and the sublime Ice that saves it...again this is just my opinion...

It certainly does! Mind you, the day I hear of someone who doesn't like Snow Goose, I'll be campaigning to bring back the birch! grin

No stinkers for me.

Breathless can be a bit hit & miss, but by "miss" I mean only that some songs are a bit lightweight by Camel standards and as melodic pop songs I really like them. But the album is worth hearing for Echoes alone, and Rainbow's End is the most poignant song in their repertoire.

ICSYH is for me an interesting change of direction with some strong songs, I would say it has actually aged very well compared with some.

Single Factor is also in the hit & miss category, more so than Breathless. You probably have to be an Alan Parsons Project fan (which I am) to fully dig it. Tour was superb: loved David Paton's bass work & supporting vocals and the onstage banter.

Of the latter day albums, my favourite is easily Rajaz.

Dust and Dreams is my favourite Camel album from the 90s. I do like Rajaz a lot but there are a couple of fillers in that album which make it a 8/10 album.

Yeah I know what you mean about the S word...I regret it now as maybe I should have used a different definition....but in view of the subject not every artist has a perfect canon...even Genesis had 1 or 2 duff albums...and so did Paul McCartney and ELO....these are just a few of my fave artists of all time and sadly I have to accept that not every body of work created by them is of a high standard that we expect...

Yes, probably " duff " like you have for others. undecided Personally I wouldn't say that either, but that's just me. smiley

I think the secret is to not raise your expections of an album too much. Expect the unexpected, or lower your expectations, and you might be pleasantly surprised! smiley

Yep, sure is lovely stuff! Great to see them having fun isn't it? Love the bit when Andy puts his head on Colin's shoulder. Pure gold! smiley

Watched 'The Opening Farewell' a couple of times in the last week and it's definitely growing on me with each viewing. Had to smile when Andy forgets his slide (bottleneck) for 'Drafted' smiley. Great versions of 'Ice' and 'Spirit of the Water', in fact I'd say the sound and the band warmed up nicely for the second half of the gig. I enjoyed seeing Andy use his 'Burny' Les Paul for most of the gig too. Nice to hear different flavours with different guitars! cool

Better resurrect the guillotine then, I can't stand it myself!

Yes, of course I'm joking! Snow Goose is in my top three Camel albums, along with Moonmadness and probably the self-titled debut. wink

I quite agree Squigs.
If you think about it, all bands want to improve from the albums that went before, generally speaking. Yes there maybe contractual obligations that perhaps might press a band into releasing an album earlier than wished, however I believe that in order to be progressive, most bands try out new sounds or styles. after all, it would be boring if all the albums sounded exactly the same and they would have a smaller following as a consequence.

Interesting.

For me, the only two duffers in the Camel catalogue are from the CP years, where there would be no label pressures for release schedules or commerciality.

There is the issue that some artists, when not on a major label, or self releasing, get a bit self indulgent, which, in the case of HoT & AN&AW seems to be what went wrong, IMO.

Fortunately, though, Camel never went down the quantity over quality route, unlike the likes of Rick Wakeman & Tangerine Dream.
