I've got ten Camel albums, but I think Harbour Of Tears is my least favourite of the lot. I know others rate it highly but it's not for me, either musically or lyrically I'm afraid. rolleyes

Many Camel fans have a lot of differences when it comes to what is their favorite albums...I have all their albums yet my least favorites are Rain Dances, Breathless, A Single Factor and I Can See Your House From Here...yet I do know that those are among the favorites of many Camel fans.....we all have different tastes I suppose....

Got my copy of "The Opening Farewell" yesterday, and I have one question:

Why is Colin Bass wearing his pyjama trousers? shocked

I'll give my views on the DVD later, when I have had a chance to watch on the TV rather than the laptop.

I never listen to Harbour of Tears or A Nod And A Wink. I think they are both dire. They only have one half decent track each, and that isn't enough to tempt me. Mercifully, only one of those tracks appears on The Opening Farewell.

Mmm... I think he was heading to bed with his Horlicks as soon as the gig was over!

OK... Watched/listened to the DVD twice, and my impressions are:

Sound - poor. I know there were problems that meant this wasn't released after the tour, and I don't know what the nature of the problem was, or the sound source used on the DVD, but it is very weedy, with little bottom end. This is sad, when you have a bass player as good as CB.

Vision - Average. It looks like it was shot on consumer quality equipment. OK, I accept that it was never going to be "Pulse" by Pink Floyd, but it is rather basic, and I accept that it is 7 years old, and standards have risen since then, but it looks a bit amateur.

Setlist - Good. It spans almost all the good parts of Camel down the years, but I'm disappointed there was no Never Let Go or Arubaluba, two great tracks from the early days, both of which would have been a fantastic way to sign off a "farewell" performance.

Performance - Andrew Latimer gives his all, as you would expect, and Colin Bass is one of my favourite players. He is let down by the sound, but you can still tell he was playing brilliantly. Denis Clement is the best drummer Camel have had since the days of Andy Ward, and here is no exception....

But! Tom Brislin.... I have seen him perform with YES on the Magnification tour, and while a technically proficient player, he is just that. a sideman. When you think back over the great keyboards players who have graced Camel, he is just anonymous. I know Guy LeBlanc wasn't available for family & health reasons, but he is sorely missed here.

Over all, because of the nature of the beast event, it is a great document, and gets a pass mark from me on the basis of that, but I hope the next farewell DVD is better! (And a long way off!)

Well said Squigs, me too. Incidently, I was pleasantly surprised with the audio/visual quality but maybe that's just me, eternally grateful for anything Camel.
