ST is one of my faves too...great to watch and hear....I put it on the other day and our 5 year old autistic son just stopped what he was doing and was mesmerised and asked who's that and when I told him he replied very slowly CA-MEL....and then he said AN-DY....he's really into music anyway so I thought why not start him off early with one of the best bands ever..... cool

Truly amazing. There's something magical about this timeless music which reaches out to us all. Thx carpetwalker.

Just came along this review of Odyssice's newest, called Silence. I will need to get a hold of that , reading this from the Progarchives website

Quote:
3 stars This band picks up a 70s tradition of Dutch symphonic instrumental Prog, following in the footsteps of Trace and Finch so to speak. I must admit I'm not the biggest supporter of that scene. But I can't help it, I'm Belgian.

Kidding aside, this particular release from Odyssice manages to overcome the misgivings I usually have. They bring bright and mellow music but they make it work with their sweet sad melodies and nostalgic 80's sound with the big lush keyboards. The band delivers their compositions with well-crafted melodies and splendid lead guitar work that makes us almost forget Andy Latimer.

Well, not really 'forget' Latimer, rather 'remember', as this music is a tribute to the instrumentals from 1979-1984 Camel, reminding us of tracks like Pressure Points, Sasquatch, Ice, Drafted-Docks and so on. And take it from a skeptic, they do this style with so much skill and feeling that I am almost tempted to rate this as an excellent album.

Silence is a gorgeous album when I'm in the mood to dream along with romantic instrumental rock music. However, for me, a 4 star rating comes with a need for a more personal sound then the one band tribute that Odyssice does. But in the end, they do it very well and I can heartily recommend this album if you just want to enjoy good symphonic songwriting and execution. 3.5 stars.

Thinking of taking the plunge with Camel. What should I start with? I think I've narrowed it down to 1 of 3 albums:

1. Mirage
2. Moonmadness
3. Music Inspired By The Snow Goose

Any advice would be welcome. smiley

About time too mate.... grin

Mmmm difficult one that...which one to start with...all 3 of those are pretty great.....but if I had to be introduced to them all over again, I would have picked one from each era to have a rounded out view of the various sounds of the band....

I would go for something like Moonmadness or The Snow Goose....then maybe Dust and Dreams...then Rajaz or the last offering A Nod and a Wink...but then again what the heck try them all....but I was trying to see it from your point of view...remember when you first heard Muse and Porcupine Tree you didn't go chronologically, you just went sort of pot luck...so maybe try it like that with Camel...but then again you may want to listen to a few more ideas from other Camelites first before delving......come on guys help the man out!!!

From those 3 I'd choose ' Moonmadness '. It's down to the individual though. First one I heard was ' The Snow Goose ', which got me hooked instantly. I think ' Moonmadness ' would have had the same effect though. smiley

With Muse and Porcupine Tree I pretty much went reverse chronologically. Camel span a much greater time span, so I thought I'd start with a mid-70s album by them. Thanks for your advice and thanks to the others who have offered opinions. Watch this space. smiley

I have the first album Impressions and the follow up Moondrive and both are wonderful and you can hear the Camel feel in a lot of the songs. Not got the new one yet but will rectify that in 2011.

Probably not Squigs but I think the emphasis on Audioroot's post was the Latimer style guitar work and I guess letting Camel fans know of this wonderful Dutch instrumental band.

Well I was just wondering about the very explicit comparisons to Camel's music, that's all. I hoped someone had actually heard (about) that album and could either agree or not with that review, which I thought could go any direction....

I agree with you Noni. The last 4 albums are just amazing!!! smiley I mostly listen to ' Rajaz ' and ' A Nod And A Wink ' recently. I do dip in with the older stuff too though. Depends on my mood. I think Camel have music for every mood. smiley
