xx Elbow- Little Fictions(2017)
« Thread started on: Feb 3rd, 2017, 02:12am »

I was going to post a new thread, what ever happened to Elbow. They have been so quiet over the past few years...

While doing a search the other day discovered they have just released a new album "Little Fictions"..I have such a soft spot for Guy's voice had to get the new album...

Cannot say disappointed but surprised just how mellow these tracks are. Was hoping for another Seldom Seen Kid epic album.. Lots on here will love this new album a lot due to it's pop side of music. This album will certainly be rated as quite stunning as many reviews already has stated...

This is definitely a good album but different from the rest of their albums, but keeping the strengths of Elbow in the hearts of fans.

There are a few great songs on the album, I'm sure will be hits this year. Magnificent(she says) hit me straight away.... Don't expect the proggier side like "Seldom" just a traditional piece of good easy listening music... cool ....................................................... A thumbs up for Elbow fans. smiley

I like it. It doesn't have a mind-blowing (to me) track on it like 'This Blue World' or 'Some Riot' or 'Loneliness of the Tower Crane Driver' or 'The Birds' etc. I like Kindling very much. I find Elbow takes a few listens to appreciate.

Listening to the depth of this reminds me how shallow most popular music is. Class Act.

Not that shallowness is necessarily a bad thing in pop music!

I do like Elbow but have had a sort of slow puncture of enthusiasm for them. I was peripherally aware of them until like many people I found them looming much larger on my radar at the time of Seldom Seen Kid. It was a rendition of Grounds For Divorce on Later that made me sit up and take notice. There are some prime cuts on that album and Tower Crane Driver might be the pick of them for me. What a song. And he gives it the full Gabriel when he lets rip on that one.

It made me go back to their earlier stuff; it's a mixed bag but Any Day Now, Grace Under Pressure, Station Approach and Mexican Standoff are great rock songs. I found Rocket less consistent than Seldom but Lippy Kids is a great song. They're a very 'economical' band, maybe not always in a good way, I find that sometimes they stretch thin material too far. The aforementioned Birds is an example of that.

I got Take-Off ages after it came out when I saw it going cheap but haven't actually listened to it yet. I do feel like I've kind of lost touch with their stuff now, I think maybe because whenever I hear any new material it never seems to be all that different from what they've done before. I do think Garvey's one of the best lyric writers around. And I really like his 6 Music show.

It's interesting to see them being classified as prog rock. There's been some discussion in other threads about what prog is. As a fan of some bands that are usually classed as prog, I find myself wondering how bands get this label. What makes Elbow "prog" to some people?

Agree that shallow can be ok.

I guess 'Loneliness of Tower Crane Driver' 'The Birds' and songs like that I may consider prog, or soft prog grin ....because they are longer that the standard and build and climax just the way I like.
