THIS MESSAGE CONTINUED FROM ABOVE

THE EVENING WITH THE QUEEN... all the musicians went solo, no wives. I was ushered on arrival into a room with 7 other people. A mistake I thought. Not so apparently. A very wonderful 7 people it turned out to be... when HRM had left us to join the rest of the gang, I was able to take in all the gathered guests. There was Eric C, Jeff B, Jimmy P and Brian M all gathered talking... everywhere you looked there was a little bit of musical history. I caught up with EC..lovely, lovely... PG too... and Brian Eno... a lovely, lovely evening.

TARZAN V BEARS... Tarzan took more money for sure in the USA, but Worldwide it's a toss up. I had musical highlights on both movies..different jobs, different movies. Bears was more spiritual, and we can't ignore the difference films like Shrek made on hand drawn animated films... taste at the time really. I do mourn though, the ceasing of production of hand drawn films. Eventually, in years to come, someone will suggest a hand drawn idea, and it will be too late, all the artists will have gone. These artists are taught by a "hand me down" way of life... apprentices and such... when the line breaks... it's over. An end of an era. Popular taste is "to blame". Everyone wants the cutting edge stuff. When that becomes "the norm"... we'll get bored with that too.

A VICTIM... I like "dark" too so who knows whether it'll turn up in songs or not. I never tried to be darker...what happened, happened.... wait and see.

MUSICAL BOX MARTIN... his voice DID sound just like me, it was eerie. As I mentioned earlier, he played SO great...and he "did me" perfectly... plus he is also a talent in his own right.

SABIAN... I ended up with a deal with this company originally because Zildjian weren't interested at all. There are only so many cymbal makers out there... They're good to me and we did a special cymbal where all the profits go to charity... nice people and great cymbals. Sponsors include Gretsch, Noble and Cooley and Korg.

I'm afraid that's all for now... I'll get to the other questions ASAP... promise.

MARCH 2005

Hi everybody... sorry this has taken a while, also sorry for any "sense" errors, I have checked it and corrected all I saw....

SUPPERS READY.... I have no recollection of when we debuted that song. There must be someone somewhere out there who knows. The phonetic spelling for Throwing It All Away would be..."ZEED-A-DAY-OH"....I think that's what the question was !!!!

QUIET LIFE ON THE ROAD....yes...I used to put the wrapping paper back on the soap bars. I always felt sorry for Hotel Maids too. I'd walk past open doors on the way to check out, and there'd be rooms that looked like Attila The Hun had passed by to have a Rape and Pillage on his way home. Trouble was we were all married, or had girlfriends, we knew what it was like to have to clear up, wash up or whatever....and as far as drugs were concerned, we were never "out" there. Peter for example, only had to sniff a glass of wine and he'd be unmanageable !!!

We weren't saints either though....'nuff said. However, I used to get quite depressed when I'd look out at an audience and see people legless or wasted, thinking that they'd wasted their money as most of them would be asleep by the end of the show. Some thought too I suppose that we were in a similar mindset and we'd all go to the same place together !!! We were in fact painfully straight on stage.....

BIG BAND DRUMMERS.... someone asked about influences on the Big Band (I think) and as well as the obvious Buddy Rich, who was an example to any drummer, my favourite was Sonny Payne who played with Count Basie. He was the drummer on Sinatra's "Live At The Sands" Las Vegas record, with Quincy Jones conducting. He was a fabulous player, and his bass drum sound was what I was always going for in my Big Band mix. There's always a "front", a "click" on the front of pop/rock bass drums on records....with Big Bands you have to change the mentality and approach both from the tuning POV, and the out front mixing POV. Sonny Payne's bass drum sound was felt not heard, until he dropped his "bombs" with the horn section.

A little story.... When we played Carnegie Hall in NYC in 98, I wanted to tape the show as usual, this time for sentimental reasons....I had never played that great Hall before. We were told that due to NYC Union Rules, we couldn't use a DAT player as it could be good enough quality for a live recording/release. They said I could record on a cassette with the one mic above the stage. Their mic...their placing...no messing. Not the most Hi-Fi situation !!! However I did it, and when I got back to the Hotel I put the Cassette on and was amazed by the sound....this was the way the great Big Bands recorded most of the time way back. The Band makes their own balance and you just record that. So when we went in to mix the Hot Night CD. I kept referring to that cassette. That's the way I think Big Bands sound best... I don't like the "clinical" approach much.

Sorry for getting "anoraky" here, but difficult to resist. The "Invisible Touch" track on my BB CD was arranged by Sammy Nestico, who did a lot of the Basie arrangements. When I heard the "demo" of this tune by Nestico, it gave me, right there, the entire reason for doing the project. He'd taken the song apart and "Basied" it. Harry Kim was my channel to these guys....he knew them and asked them to write charts for my Big Band. John Clayton Jnr. was another....they all responded positively and produced charts that were wonderful. Some were less successful, depending on the tune they were arranging being suitable for a BB arrangement, sometimes on the arranger not being in tune with what I wanted. What we played Live were the successful ones. If I may explain the earlier mention of the "demo" version.....I don't read drum music. For a Big Band drummer this is a huge obstacle. There are so many nuances to catch, understand, highlight......and usually they're all on paper. Buddy Rich didn't read either apparently, he got someone else to play it while he remembered it.....amazing if you listen to his records knowing that. I was stuck with the same method....Harry got a crack team together in LA to record "demos" of the tunes, conducted by the arranger to make sure it was how he meant it. When I got the tape and listened to it, I'd then invent my own phonetic music notation so I could play it. It meant NO sense to anyone else......

SOMEWHERE AND THERE'S A PLACE....I've always been in love with West Side Story...the story of that movie is of course taken from Romeo and Juliet, which I've always loved also. Somewhere is probably one of the most beautiful love songs ever written....and the sentiment behind that song was also the sentiment behind There's A Place. I do quote the song in it......

SELF TAUGHT.....I basically taught myself to play drums and piano. I went to lessons for both, but way after I could play. As I could already play and my Memory was so good, once I'd heard the piece, I was able to play it...not an advantage if you're trying to learn to read, as you already know it and it's difficult to cut that off. I wish I'd been more attentive at school in music lessons... it wasn't "hip" ....I wanted to play, not play scales etc. Now though, I'd urge anyone to persevere with music lessons. Anyway nowadays most teachers are quite hip to that and half the lesson is "learning" and the other half "playing".

HOWARD STEIN SHOW......I did this under duress. I'd seen his show and did not like the guy much. However my Record Company thought it would be a good idea to do it. I got up VERY early to do it and was not in a very good mood. However, I found him quite different from what I'd expected. I got the impression that he liked musicians and didn't want to mess me up. I arrived on the defensive, but had a good time on the show. I believe that he is just playing the part that the public want him to play....it sells and why not cash in ? He opened the door unfortunately for a certain style of "Talk TV/Radio" that's been abused, although he himself has abused it often. I don't approve, but he was pretty harmless.

WE SAID HELLO GOODBYE.....this song was used in "Playing for Keeps", a "teen" movie in the 80's. The song was written for NJR however, and it was left off for the usual reasons. I like the song very much. Arif Mardin, that wonderful Producer/Arranger, wrote an intro for it, that is just beautiful.

BOTH SIDES AND THE SUITS.....I remember sitting round a table with all the heads of Atlantics Radio Promotion in New York and playing them the CD. What they thought and what they said were different things I believe....who knows. I would imagine there must have been a feeling of.... "uh...oh".... especially coming after BS and its huge success. Regarding the drum machine on ITAT and We Fly So Close....it's the same machine and it's a very distinctive sound. I wanted to use it, but no matter what colour you try to paint it, when you look at it it still looks the same colour. However, WFSC is a favourite song of mine and was written originally for "The Client", a John Grisham book made into a film by Joel Schumacher.

SUSSUDIO AND THE AUDIENCE....no big dramas here except for the French lady who wouldn't let me go in Paris.....and a lady somewhere in the USA who had large breasts and insisted that I examine them....though tempted, I decided to avoid contact..... difficult to explain to Orianne that it was all in a days work.

CONVERSE....still wear them. I changed into them for the MB gig in Geneva for example. On the FFFT I had some different shoes that felt good for playing AND looked good for the "stage" thing. In days gone by, Eric C gave me a little flight case for my Converse...with the felt cut out in the shape
for the shoes...cute eh

LORENZO...I'd seen the film and was very moved by the film version of their story. Then one day out of the blue, Michaela Odone wrote to me saying that Lorenzo and her had chosen me to put the music to Lorenzo....poetry that she and Lorenzo had written. I was flattered and wrote what's on the DITL CD. Sometimes writing music to existing lyrics is easier than starting from scratch and also pushes you into a different direction for a while.

ITS OVER...I wrote this at sound checks on the Both Sides tour...it's about a marriage ending. The "man" if I remember rightly, was me.

RICKY/CHESTER...both great drummers...both do different things. They both add different grooves to my songs. I missed the "fire" of Chester when I was with Ricky....but Ricky was rock solid.

MY CARS....a Range Rover and a Mini...nothing too exciting. Cars are just for getting to and from in as far as I'm concerned.

RAP AND ME....I have a lot to say about Rap, and will not bore you with it here. Suffice to say that I like a lot of the new rap stuff. The problem I had was with the early stuff....negative and contrary to helping us understand each other. Digging ditches, not building bridges. There are enough examples of us not understanding each other in a worldwide sense....and music can occasionally help mend those problems. I felt that Rap, though speaking some truth about what a mess that culture was living in, didn't do much for the cause of seeking an understanding to fix those problems. Sometimes the mess you're in is not of your doing on both "sides", and factions take up their corners. That can hold up progress in reaching out for an understanding. I don't mean to oversimplify a complicated situation....but broadly speaking that's how I felt. Anyway...Bone,Thugs and Harmony made me an offer I couldn't refuse....they chose a favourite song of mine AND they offered to come to Geneva to do the Video...nice guys, and they can sing !!! There are a lot of great singers out there in the world that was Rap.....

BRAND X....did I play on Masques I thought that by that time I'd been replaced. The last album I really played on was Product... I wrote "and so to F"...which was a play on "and so to bed" and us finally arriving to that great moment, the key of "F". It was the 70's/80's...I make no excuses for the titles !!!

SILVER RAINBOW...ask TB, he wrote the words...I only sang them !!!

SIMPLIFYING THE G MUSIC....no plan, no plot...we ALL just evolved into trying to see what we could say as simply as possible. Without betraying our "roots", whatever they were.

MIAMI VICE....loved the 1st and 2nd series...they used music very well with image. They were always very nice to me and the 'Spiv" episode is repeated endlessly.

MANY TOO MANY....John, when we met at Manchester I didn't find you tongue tied at all...and the song (TB's) is not one of my favourites

MY GIRL....had just met Orianne...'nuff said.....

RUSSIA....stay tuned....October

JRPM....thank you....

That's it. I'm starting to get mail via Annie from various people on the site...I'll try to reply but don't accept that as a given......please.

Thank you for listening and I'll be back soon......

Love from the singer...PC

APRIL 2005

Dearest peoples out there....

I know what you're thinking... you're thinking: the novelties worn off and I'm off to find excitement elsewhere.... Well actually that's not the case at all. I really haven't had the time to do much else than write, write, write songs for Tarzan. The musical is now nearer than we all thought and so the work is getting more intense.

That and with Nicholas and Mathew.... Nicholas is now at first school, and Mathew wants to be in everything.... I know you'll understand, but thought I'd explain my recent absence.

I'll be back at some point for more verbal abuse...

Also the tour dates will be on the site soon...not as many for the moment as originally planned as the musical has come forward, but wherever I've missed, I'll try to put in at a later date. However there'll be no "going back" over old ground... at least unless there's a special reason.

Love for now....

APRIL 2005

Guys and gals out there....

I see a lot of foaming at the mouth from parts of the world that are not included in the dates already announced. I said, and I repeat, it is my intention to play the places I will be forced to miss in the coming months due to the musical looming. The FFFT is not over till I have played the places I wish to play. If that means doing it in school holidays over a longer period of time, then so be it... But it will, in almost certainty, be done.

Fret not...

JUNE 2005

It has come to my attention that various sources have started to speculate on my involvement in "Live 8". All I can say is that I have not been asked to participate, and indeed cannot if I were asked. In fact I know nothing about it.

I wholly support the principle of the event but, as I said, I have not been approached, and will not be available at that time. I am in touch with Bob G, and have narrated his own "Live Aid" special for radio. So it is absolutely nothing personal. I love him dearly. I have done numerous interviews over the last 12 months celebrating both "Band Aid" and "Live Aid", and I was very proud to have been involved with both events. So, if you see my name linked with this event, by all means support it, but don't expect me to be there singing.

JUNE 2005

Hi All, I wrote this a while ago after reading the Gallagher's talking about voting Labour if only to keep me from coming back to England. I took offence at that and wrote this, but sat on it... however in the light of the Mirror piece I'm prepared to post it and be d**ned....

Before I say anything.. let the minutes of this meeting show brothers, that I like a fair bit of what THE OASIS do. They remind me of BEATLES.... a great band and I like being reminded of BEATLES. If you were there the first time round, you might think THE OASIS were a bit similar, what with that Liam and his attitude and his brother Noel... thinking they are as good as them BEATLES. Fact is.... they are a bit pale compared to them BEATLES..... I am, we all are.... Now Liam is just a clot... bop him round the head, and wake him up... Noel is smarter... but only just.... Just because they write a tune or two that reminds us of BEATLES we swoon a bit and reminisce.... but it's only nostalgia really.

Now....

I'd like to grab an opportunity to finally lay to rest a much quoted untruth about my Political leanings. I have never been a Conservative, or at least not since being a young teenager. My Father voted Conservative, and even his doing that was a hangover from the 50's and 60's, which may have been an influence on me. I'm sick and tired of being thrown in that same old box... "he's got money.... so he must be..." I once said that if taxes were put up to a level where the Government took home more than me, then I would consider moving out of the Country. The Conservatives were in at that point and I mentioned Labour... if Labour had been in, I would have mentioned Conservative. It was said to make a point over 15 years ago. No one’s asked me since. I don't care if Noel Gallagher likes my music or not.... I do care if he starts telling people I'm a wanker because of my Politics.... an opinion based on an old misunderstood quote.

I live outside the UK purely because my wife lived here when we met.

End of story.

JULY 2005

Hi Everybody, I'm back and I hope you missed me !!! I haven't quoted the questions you asked in the answers.... you'll have to refer to them yourselves if that's alright. So.... onwards......

RICKY GERVAISE ?? LIVE 8 WHAT DID HE SAY ? (see ***)

SILENT BOB
it is more interesting to the tabloid press, which covers most of the UK papers nowadays, to be more negative and critical. It makes better press for them and is considered more edgy. I think it's very brave of Coldplay to refer to me at all, especially in such kind context when they know it could come back to haunt them !!! I have to say that the whole thing that has arisen in recent times of me being the epitome of "the great musical evil" and to be avoided at all costs, is both curious and disturbing to me. Why I have been chosen for this role is a little beyond me. It seems that it's started by an anonymous voice and seconded by others without question. There was a very nice article in the Guardian by an ex NME journo, who said that on mentioning my name at a dinner party, was surprised by how many other people present confessed to "liking" my stuff, albeit secretly. Some how, some way, I have become "worse" than Cliff or Barry Manilow... If anyone has any theories as to why, or when this started let me know. Going back to the Ricky Gervaise thing about how he could spend 20 minutes telling people why I wasn't at LIVE 8..... I'd really like to know how he'd fill that 20 minutes.

UK76
Never did play piano on RAIN DOWN on stage.

EVH-5150
No plans to produce anyone at all.... if I did it would be John Martyn, who I still worship and adore.

MARK KENYON
Re. Set changes.... there may be the odd song that changes.... we'll rehearse and see what happens. Nothing MAJOR will change as this is a continuation and the set works well. As I've said before, it is a show that is made to be seen once.... if you choose to go again please don't complain if you find it's the same material.

PHILLY JOE
The 3/4 version of Homeless was where that song started...and songs can be adapted to different styles or feels depending on the interpreter. I love versions of my songs that are radically different. The "tribute" album URBAN RENEWAL is a great example. I didn't get to hear that song you refer to yet, and to be honest I rarely listen to anything other than what I'm involved in..... with family and now GOLF !!!! there is no time for anything other than ME and the World I live in. This is something that I noticed Roger Waters open up to and admit in an interview a while back..... I sometimes girl thingyfoot around the issue by saying that I try to keep up to date with what's happening, and I do try... but really I just don't CARE or HAVE TIME. I spend so much time doing what I'm doing that it all goes past me.

ROLLERNIK
I have to make a point here that my doing Germany again (Düsseldorf), is an example of me doing a "special" showcase gig. They asked me to open the Arena, AND said they'd give the money to the LDF. Otherwise I would not be playing there again.... having already played Germany on the FFFT 2004. Guitar.... I'd love to play guitar, which is why I "play" it in the DITTL videos. I own a few great guitars... Rickenbackers mainly..... and a Hofner Beatle Bass !!!

LYNNIE
I don't really miss the leafy lanes of Surrey, which is not to say that I dislike them !!! I'm happy, very happy where I am and that's good enough for me.

LIZET
The musical is opening on Broadway in the first part of next year.... where it goes from there is out of my hands. I just returned from NY where we were auditioning people.... very interesting to be that close to the real work.

LEIGHBEE
Nice to hear that people in Australia haven't forgotten me, it's been a while. We have an Aussie Meryl Tankard doing our choreography in Tarzan. She is an amazing lady from down under, that is giving the show the Jungle movement needed from the cast. I do thrive on work, but my little family give me huge pleasure. I need to have the brakes put on me....

MEAN AUNTIE
Acting.... may do more, like to do more.... just got to find that balance of doing nothing and enjoying, or working and enjoying....

MOZOBATH
My experience with MUSICAL BOX was interesting. Here was a group of guys, playing what we had written.... Martin playing perfectly what I'd played.... but I was not on the same page from a "chops" point of view. I couldn't recreate that PC.... it's true to say that I didn't try too hard to recreate it either. I'd underestimated the task. That music needs to be played in a certain way that I don't do any more. It was a little "camera shutter" moment where it explains why you have moved on, and why that suit doesn't fit you any more. It was a time and place. They do it extremely well.... that's THEIR show now.... not mine. Next time I'd rehearse the music a bit more beforehand !!!

PHILDAS
If we do the more "exotic" places it will be in school holidays..... My meter is running out before Nic goes to school. Anything that happens after that will be because it can fit in with his schooling.

MR E
The content of the FFFT set has been dealt with long ago, and indeed brought us all together to this place !!! I've referred to this question earlier.

DAN FROM NYC
I am blessed with a long memory and a long career, don't worry, I'm not offended. It reminds me of an interview I saw with Bill Wyman, when he said a fan had come to him and said that he was a fan from "way back".... in this case meaning EMOTIONAL RESCUE.... even then 20 years after their first album. I can take it all. I have no problems answering questions about any of the past efforts. I have mixed feelings about some of them, but I CAN have those, as I was personally involved and see them in a different way than anybody else... even the other band members. The intro to COME WITH ME was based on a melody that I'd sung for Lily, then 5, when we'd be in a bad time zone for her and she needed to sleep. It's basically a Lullaby. Nicholas and Lily have Music Boxes with that music on. Mathew has his own new one......

DAN FROM NYC
Don't even go there, least not on my website. Technical stuff etc is of no interest to me.... they are without doubt the yardstick by which I judge modern song writing. Forget that it's "old".... it has rarely been equalled and even with the Great Pretenders OASIS vying for their Crown... it's not happening. It's not that I'm a Nostalgia freak.... they were just great writers, with a great producer, at the right time, with the right noise. I have bought many CD's of the 60's bands because I wanted to have those songs but all of them pale in comparison when you put them next to the Beatles stuff. The Hollies had moments of greatness.... and there are others in small number.... but please don't start a "who was better"... not when you talk about them.

MNORI
I have no idea about Karen Carpenters abilities as a drummer.... never thought about it. Alex is a great drummer. Not coming to Brazil unfortunately, no.... I hope to at some point before one of us dies.

DUDU81
I think I was hoping that COME WITH ME from Testify would be a hit somewhere, but it's a "creeper" and you can't afford that today.... I really don't know what is a hit anymore. I never did really. I never chose the singles, which I guess is why I get mad when I'm judged by those songs and not the other songs hidden on a CD. To many people my catalogue is dominated by AGAINST ALL ODDS, ONE MORE NIGHT, SUSSUDIO and the like. Very few people other than your good selves dig deeper than that.... am I repeating myself here....I fear I am.

FANINCANADA
I wish I had a VIDEO/DVD of our "Lamb", but nothing exists. Hard to believe in this day and age of Internet and DV recorders..... There is a rumour that we'll get together and redo it for old times sake.... but having just read Mojo and seen that Peter has resisted "big money" to do it.... perhaps I'm wrong. I'm available and I'm dead cheap.... and I'll practise, I promise.

BROOKLYNBLUGIRL
A very seductive name I have to say.... I was definitely the odd man out when I joined Genesis. I came from a Stage School where everything was possible. They were from an English Public School where only certain things were allowed. I was however the "clown" and deflated any pomp that loomed over us. Happy days though.... never knew who would walk out in a huff next.

JOHN WILKINSON
Yes, I'm playing Scotland and Ireland because we didn't feel good not doing it last time in June. I am trying very hard to not do a "CHER" and keep replaying venues I've already done.... but we didn't do those places so my conscience is clear. I think I have the old Prophet, but it doesn't work anymore. It was patch 31 on IN THE AIR. 36 on I MISSED AGAIN. I still have the original drum machine... that still works. I didn't know that they gave away the workmate and paint...great idea. It was all last minute really... don't have a keyboard stand, use a workmate.... the paint was a joke, but not towards the ex wife and the decorator.... I didn't even realise the connection till people mentioned it
afterwards.

CAPT CABBAGE
I went and had a look. Where can I start, HOW can I start to make it understandable.... I was in a band I loved (of course).... I was there for 23 years before I decided to leave. I loved everything we did WHEN we did it, at that time.... well nearly everything... in the later days as I was in the stages of realising what I wanted to do AS ME, it WAS difficult to sing things you didn't understand or relate to... BUT hey, it's a band and we don't all LOVE the things the other guy writes ALL the time. When I've said over the years that I have reservations about this or that... it's really because I thought we were capable of better things in retrospect. I don't mean to demean or ridicule those that like it, it means something different to them than it does to me that's all. Whether it be recording or writing or arranging it. From inside that great band Genesis, I feel I can offer criticism that no other person can, except those involved, and we all see things differently even if we were in it !!! When I saw the LAMB by the MB, I was both amazed and surprised at how much was great and how much was expendable and a little fluffy.

MAT C
Beatles.... I've talked about this earlier and really you had to be there to know how great it was.
Yes it was/is brain damaging to meet/play/know your heroes.... I'm still a fan at heart really. So when I play with Paul M it's strange that I sat in a theatre in 1963 and watched in awe. I have a wonderful George H story that I'll relate one day... maybe in THE BOOK !!!

MAT C again.....
My life has been a series of highlights and it's difficult to pinpoint one over another. The JUBILEE concert was a highlight as it involved playing with the best of the last 30 years singers and the songs they sang. Playing with Eric C was a high as I've mentioned before many times. The Oscar.... yes of course. I've been archiving the last 20 years onto hard disk so I can DVD it for myself.... videos have a tendency to break in time. I've been amazed at how I was so welcomed by Jonathan Ross for example on his shows.... at the Brits.... winning time after time..... I find it weird to have ended up being the brunt of crap from the same people that welcomed me so many years ago. No morose feelings here, just curiosity.

LIVIER
No idea who'll be on the next record except for me !!!

PCTRADES
No reason why we started with certain songs and not others.... just instinct as to what would be the best opener. Chester plays his regular kit... as do I... there is no electronics, just good old fashioned bashing.

PHILLAN
No.... didn't vote.... don't vote unless I see all the films which I rarely do. Didn't vote for myself either.... what if I'd won by a vote... couldn't live with myself.

SPRINGDESTINY
The Both Sides tour was recorded every night on the live screen video feed. I have some of these tapes. Audio wise it was recorded from the desk. So lots of tapes exist of the show and I have said before that at some point I will go through them and maybe even find something to release. I used to like singing SUPPERS READY.

ALWAYS
There was "always" a cloud over me because we didn't really say goodbye to the UK properly.
So with that in mind I added Scotland and Ireland to this next leg. I was hoping to do the REST OF THE WORLD tour that would include South America and Asia... Australia... but the Tarzan thing is rehearsing and then opening and I need to be there for that. I hope to do those places at some point in the future. With all the time in the world I would play quite a few extra places, but.... in time I will do what I can.

MIAMIPHIL
Good question... I am not a deeply religious person, though I do believe that someone is up there adding up the good and the bad !!! THAT'S THE WAY IT IS, was written about the fact that with all our apparent sophistication, we still fight each other over our choice of Gods. We can get to the Moon (or did we !) and we can create an instrument like the Internet... yet we'll still go to war over Religion. I remember watching TV during the original Gulf War and seeing a Leader of a department of Government in Iraq wearing his traditional clothes but with a mobile phone and glitzy watch.... it seemed odd that this man who hates "the West" and its temptations, still took advantage of them. Religion has caused more unhappiness in this world than we can remember. The song can be taken on various levels.... "Blackadder Blind Faith"... when you go in fighting without really knowing why.... JESUS HE KNOWS ME.... was about the TV Evangelists who are conning the American People. It's a well trodden path to retell all the gossip on these guys, but they do know how to make a living.... and they're very entertaining even if they don't mean to be.

MRDODOTSD....
Sorry no shows this time but as I said before.... I hope so.... truly.

MAMA
The Big Band is resting and when I get the urge I will wake it up and take it out again. I have not done it for the last time, no.

JROCK
I'd met Sting doing BAND AID and we'd gotten along very well. We said we'd stay in touch. Did LIVE AID together for the same reasons. He called me one day to come and play on some tracks he was working on, and I did amongst others "If you love Someone".... it was only a demo but we had fun. I was also working on an album that was to become NJR.... and had a song that I thought he'd relate to having done BAND AID. It was a song about "real life" while he or I were trying to write "a song"... all is clear in the lyrics. He came and sang in his special way. We also got Peter G and Helen Terry in with him to sing TAKE ME HOME the same day. We have stayed friends and it seems that when ever we have records out, we always meet in obscure bars all over the World. He's a good man.... a little too vain sometimes, but a good man.

PHILLYJOE
I know Bill played in a Charisma band, and is in fact much more than a Webmaster... but as I said earlier in this post.... I don't listen to much else at all.

DIZZYBEX
I will be looking out for your cleavage in Prague. Don't sell your soul though.... ROOM 101 was great great fun. Paul Merton is a great host and is a naturally funny guy. We share a few interests.... ANthingy and THE BEATLES. It will be tough for them to edit down 1 hour and 15 minutes to 28 minutes.... I managed to get ALL my "grudges" in.... but you'll have to wait till they air the programme to find out what.

MAMA
You are quite correct... red did not attract my attention. I think we need to have photos of the postee's from now on. You all know what I look like but I don't know what you look like....

URIELNL
No I have never thought of doing a song with the Corrs... no reason.... just haven't.

Well.... it appears I have arrived at the end of the Q's.... it's nice to be back... though I don't know when I'll return. Perhaps before the tour.... definitely during it.....

Before I go, there is always lots to read on the different pages on the site, but I caught this next one and it dovetails into comments made by Mr Banks about me on the WR site. I will explain this one last time and hope that some of you and our "Tone" gets it.

I do not write songs like BROTHER BEAR or WELCOME or YOU'LL BE IN MY HEART or TRASHIN THE CAMP... without a destination ahead. I am commissioned to do a project. In this case, a Disney film or Musical. I write specifically for that project. It does not influence my writing outside that project except for maybe anything that I've learned along the way. Like how to sync up computers, or write "less" when "more" would have been the way before.... but the actual songs are written specifically for that job. There is no link to the mellowing sound of TESTIFY to my Disney stuff. It's not like I get painted a different colour doing it and I can't get it off.....

I'm a songwriter that likes to write for different things. It's not easy doing it and I like the challenge. There is a great misconception that Disney films are for kids and are a no brainer to write. WRONG. If I am less edgy than I was it's because I'm 54.... not because I write for Disney. I'm as happy thrashing away on the drums as I am writing a song for a little Bear Cub who's lost his Mum. To touch the nerve is important. If there are some that don't relate then fine.... in the same way not everyone likes DITL or NJR the same.

When I read Tony B's quotes I was a little saddened because he of all people knows that we are a writers that write. He was as happy playing SQUONK as he was playing CINEMA SHOW... they both did different jobs and were part of what he/we did. He should and probably does, know. There was a time when he'd have given his right arm and a bit of his leg too to do a Disney film.... music for picture... a challenge.

Lots of love.... the Singer that drums.

AUGUST 2005

Hi all, lot's of stuff here, mostly good.....

DIZZYBEX.... my "fragrance"... something no one has ever asked me. I use/wear Aqua Di Gio, which is made by Giorgio Armani. As to what I'll be wearing on the next leg of the tour.... I probably will bring out the stuff I have been using previously. I bought a lot of those outfits and they're really comfortable to wear in the heat of battle. They're also very expensive...... so.....

UK76..... I never thought about the distance during LIVE AID and I won't be thinking about it going from Düsseldorf to Dubai either !!! Simon will be there to open for us if he has some kind of tour with other dates in Europe. His CD is out and I'll post his website where it can be bought soon as he lets me know the details. He's a little "in the woods" at the moment trying to put it all together himself. Brave Lad.

SAPPHIRA... a great writer called Russ Ballard wrote the Frida song "I Know There's Something Going On"... he played with Adam Faith and the Roulettes for those old enough to remember. Their drummer was Robert Henrit who with Russ went on to play in Argent, a great band fronted by Rod Argent of the old Zombies fame. His demo was fantastic, and we basically did it the same way. Regarding my songs about "nutters"... it seems I have written a few like that. Sometimes it develops from the improvised lyrics that I sang when I/we were writing the song. Mama is John Lennon really and somehow the lyric became about a Motherly Hooker.... Tonight Tonight is about a junkie actually, "waiting for the man".... Take Me Home, Thru These Walls... don't know why. There's a little of the disturbed in all of us.... Any Doctors out there... your opinions please.

NOWAYOUT... I've been a closet Liverpool fan for years. We seemed to meet them a lot in the 80's. When they won the league one year, we were playing in Liverpool and they came to the gig after they'd won the Championship and we had a few drinks in the Hotel. Kenny Dalglish became a good pal after that, Davy Johnson, Sammy Lee, Ray Clemence.... great players and great guys. I watched the Champions League Final and thought it was all over, then they pulled off the big one. Great stuff to watch. It has been mentioned a few times that my support has changed over the years, different teams etc. Primarily, I like a good game of football played well. So if a team is playing good football, I'll go and watch. Liverpool were one of the rare clubs that had at one time, mostly home grown players. People that actually had been born on Merseyside. I admired that, as that's why these clubs grew when they started.... not just businessmen with blank cheques.

DANTE... Ricky G's thing at LIVE 8 was OK...I'm a target for pot shots, it comes with the turf.
Regarding the "leaving England" comment as to why my esteem has changed... you're dead right of course. People thought that I'd "deserted" them and felt cheated and betrayed. I know those feelings myself and all I can say (again) is it wasn't like that at all. I didn't leave because of the UK situation... I left because I fell in love with someone that lived somewhere else. I've said this before I know so I shall leave it here.

JROCK... there are many times I wish that I could do it all but in the end I have to own up that I'm not capable of doing most of the things that my guys can do. Drums are the only thing I do well, and thank God Chester can interpret my stuff yet put himself into it enough so that he'll enjoy it. You Know What I Mean is a one-off song. Written at the right time, saying all the things I needed to say. Glad you see that.

SIRPHILROCKS... my chances at another No.1 are pretty slim wouldn't you agree.....?

ROXANNE... I realise my strengths and my weaknesses (cleavage for example !) I will do my best to make sure that my next CD will have REAL DRUMS and be the BEST that I can do.... in fact I'm looking forward to the challenge. I'd like to change Alwin's mind for one thing !!!

MEANAUNTIE... no Wilbury's for me, though I loved that band... no I'll just try to play more drums.

ADRIENNE53... of course I'm always a bit nervous on stage, especially near the front of the show. Everyone is. That's what gives the edge.

BILL... inferiority complex ? Look in the Dictionary, there's a photo of me !!! Regarding Demos etc. I hope that one day all the good stuff will be out there, I've just got to find the time.... Bill remind me.....

TOMORROWWNDY... my feelings about CD's that I've released change depending on when I hear them. Basically except for FV, BOTH SIDES and TESTIFY they are patchy emotionally. Perhaps that is why I have these critics. They see what I do, unfortunately they don't see any of the good stuff either because of it. A lot of negative opinion is based on the wall to wall single play I got, and the songs that were chosen for them. It's too late to stop the wave now though, my die has been cast I'm sorry to say.

ALWAYS... no it's unlikely I will sing Always at Glasgow... though it is the last gig.....!!!

DOLLAR... no I never regret singing about "me"... it's what you're supposed to do isn't it ?

ERINMAIL... love Irish music, and it's Bill Bryson. I'm glad you enjoyed reading him.

CINDERELLA... no, I really don't get to listen or read a lot of what I'm sent personally. There just isn't time. I don't bin the stuff either, out of guilt I keep it forever in a bag under the desk. I have to listen to LDF related things, but that's a duty of mine. Lorenzo came out of the blue, and I really was moved by the movie. I've heard from Augusta a few times and of course Lorenzo's Mum, who was quite a woman, died a few years ago.

HOGWEED... Love Police is one of my favourites. It reminds me of the early Byrds, and at the time I was going through my retro thing of guitar songs. There are a few of them on DITL.

CLAUDIA... Unplugged is all there and mixed but there was a general feeling that the performance was reserved. This due to the fact that it was the first British performance in public since the Tabloid Hell, and I was a little insecure in front of an audience that had been force fed that stuff. Simon will not be with us in Prague, though he may be in Düsseldorf.

PETER CARAGUILO... well, the stuff with Sting was great fun but it was a strange evening. The Producer had just been nearly run over by his soon to be ex-wife !!!... and he wasn't in the best frame of mind probably. We did do If You Love Somebody, but I doubt that the tapes still exist. He didn't work with that Producer again......

PETER again..... no I didn't make the Cream shows. I was invited but couldn't make the trip. I saw Eric C just before them at his 60th Birthday bash, and we kissed and made up... actually we didn't, we just carried on like old friends do. He was sick during the shows I know that as we email each other now, which is better than nothing.

RAD DUDESKI... I saw CSN in Montreux recently, and they were great. I didn't know Vitale was in the band again, so it was a great surprise to see him again. I did ask him years ago to come on my first tour with me. His playing with Joe Walsh was fantastic. He had just joined CSN and couldn't do it, so I got Chester to do it and the rest is history of a sort. Russ Kunkel was another choice as was Ian Wallace.... both great players. Joe and I had a great time in Montreux and Nicholas and he really hit it off. Nic sat behind the curtain watching him while I held him. He said "Dad, he's playing secret No.1....." I've been helping him with a few things and sometimes to get him to remember something I'll call it secret No1... or secret No6.... it works.

LEIGHBEE... I don't mind making videos. They can be fun.... there are some great ones in the PC/Genesis catalogue. I always tell the Director that I'm only good for a few hours. If we start at 9-00 am, I've had it by 10-00 pm... I mentally go home. No Way Out WAS freezing... it was a disused wood yard, with holes in the roof and walls and it was raining and blowing a gale......

OZCHIC... Australia has had a bum deal from me. The reason is that it's so far away !!! If I do Australia then I have to do the Far East and Japan...all of which I love but it makes for a long tour. I just don't live and breath the touring like I used to. Nothing personal at all, in fact the tours down under have been filled with many great memories of good shows and nice people. No, the Tarzan Musical is not my future, just the present.

THEMASK... I stand by my promise of making available rare stuff soon as I find the time... may be next year after the dust settles on the Musical. Incidentally, while I'm here, it seems that the Musical is thought of as a pain in the arse by some out there, something that is luring me away from doing something "proper"... I hope that most of you support my growth as a writer and what goes with it. So look positively at the Musical. It has some great new tunes and after it's done... we shall move on to some other place. It most certainly isn't kids stuff. Trust me.

MIDWESTDRUMMER... whenever I do guitar parts I always start by playing "piano" chords... these don't sound right for reasons you are aware of, so I take out notes until they do sound like a guitar player could have played them. Both Sides was BC... before computer, so I really had to work that out before I recorded them.

ANNIE... my favourite lake is Lac Leman where I live.... is that the only question ? See you in Glasgow.

SHARKSAREGOOD... while I remember...I assume this is a joke... but just in case, I have never been to Cyprus in my life so the almighty strop that wouldn't give up his seat to your poor unfortunate wife was not me pal. Re-reading your post, I HAVE to believe it's a joke, not very funny, but a joke nonetheless.

BROTHER BEAR 2... I know nothing of this and I'm not involved... what's that cheering I hear ?

THIS MESSAGE CONTINUED FROM ABOVE

WHAT'STHISPOST.... after reading the favourite line post, I have to say I've written some good stuff.
I dismiss my stuff too easily sometimes, but there was some great lyrics in that list, and I'd like to thank those involved for bringing them to my attention !!!! In my notes I wrote "look closer or look somewhere else"... don't know why I wrote that, but it seemed apt at the time.

ALWIN... I have to say that I'm sorry you feel betrayed by what I'm doing with myself. I will say though that my career is, has been and always will be a variable entity. A giant umbrella under which I write what takes my fancy. I do not place Tarzan in the same bag as my Big Band, nor do I place Testify in the middle of the road. Both Sides was actually a risky album for me to make after But Seriously. The fact is that you don't like what I'm doing and are making yourself heard. You're privilege. However I do not agree that my music is not as good as it used to be. I KNOW it's better than some of my past. In fact I don't really like some of what I hear when I listen to my old stuff. I make mention elsewhere here that the lyrics I was reminded of did make me think good of myself, but then the lyrics to Testify are amongst my best too. It was where I was then and this is where I am now. There is a wealth of experience out there to be had, whether it's Disney or John Martyn. I like to taste it all. For those that really get into the edgier things, it's been a little light on the ground, but most fans of what I do, kind of expect anything from me. It really doesn't confuse me but I understand it confusing some people. Regarding the Genesis remarks I'll let them go. Judging my stuff after I left is like judging our stuff after Peter left, it's what happened. I say again LOUDLY so I don't have to say it again, I write for me, not to make a hit, not to make more money. Never did, never will.

Regarding the reunion... we're grown men. We are happy to entertain the idea of working together again as we're great friends still. However it's maybe because of eccentric remarks like yours that we think twice about it. I do have everybody's phone numbers, but if I'm the one that starts this ball rolling then it'll be me who'll have to push it all the way up that hill... I'm not sure I have the patience or time for that now. If someone calls me and says let's do something then I'll be there. It's not my fault if people are on the edge of their seats waiting for it to happen. If it makes it simpler I'll say that I WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE for any reunions. For me it's that simple. It's just an idea that I think is worth keeping the door open for, so I say "I'm here". I do appreciate your remark that if you didn't care you wouldn't bother posting your thoughts. You sound like a committed man. I like that.

... MEANWHILE BACK AT PAGE 6......

JOHN WILKINSON... rest assured that it's through letters like yours and the things that Annie sends to me "to read.... it's nice..." I forget the critics. I don't have to be reminded that it's only "one persons opinion" but nevertheless, if you put yourself in my shoes... and you only read negative things about oneself in papers that sell millions it HAS to have some effect on your self esteem. Only today on the plane having taken Lily back to London after our Summer Holidays together, a friend had a book he'd bought in London, of all the artists, every record... a huge book with discographies on everyone. I took a look at mine to see if they actually did have everything and the writer obviously hated me from day one. It continues to be a weird sensation, reading about yourself when you've never met the guy... so he has nothing to go on except his basic instincts. Now I'm not looking for reassurance... For me it's a fact of life now. I know I go on about the critics, but I'm not like an Elton or a Sting who says "f**k them"... I just wonder why this person didn't GET IT. Didn't get the whole picture... only saw "Groovy Kind of Love" and thought, that's it. This writer mentioned that people were offended by "Another Day in Paradise" being sung by a multi-millionaire. He and they, missed the point I guess. It's because I'm a multi-millionaire that I feel lucky not to be in that situation. If you read the lyrics all I'm saying is that we should never forget how lucky we are. Train's late.... coffee's cold... whatever, that's what I meant. Yet some people have never "heard" the words. Please don't write that I should lighten up... you guys ask me questions and I assume you'd like honest answers. Sensitive d**k head or not... it's me.

ERIC R... well, I remember everything about Opening Night... and the Shepperton shoot. The only footage I know from Chiddingfold is with my band for the Both Sides tour. This was sold as a VHS tape at gigs for 10 dollars. All of which went to the homeless charity in that city. I had a lot of video footage from Dallas with Robert Plant on his first tour... and the whole of the Mama album while we were making it at the Farm. However you can lose a lot of things in a divorce. Those tapes are amongst the "missing".

BUT SERIOUSLY... I would say the WCD stuff. Though there are things from IT that I like a lot too.

MOURAD... I say enough in my answers to you all, without getting deeper. Perhaps in "the book" !!!

JUSTRACH... if you REALLY want to know, we were having a conversation and I asked her if she liked cheese. She said yes, I said I like cheese too, let's get married.

TINOU... the LDF was an idea that me and the cheese loving wife had. Just try to put something back from our position of privilege. To help talented young kids out there who are saying "what if I had the chance".

IRENE... I'm reading a lot on The Alamo...I collect documents relating to that part of Texas History, as opposed to George Bush Texas History !!!

LIVIER... yup, we're coming to Greece. Can't tell you the date but it's true.

Guys..... I've reached the end of the Q's and I hope my answers are enough for you.

A bit of unrelated news.
In NY in June I turned awkwardly and apparently broke my "minisc" which is something between the bones in your leg. I had surgery and am on the mend. I hope to be able to run around as normal during the tour. However if I'm not fully fit, I'll be walking not running......

Otherwise all well in the Collins house.

Be careful out there, and see you soon.

Love... the singer.

AUGUST 2005

In respect of the continuing speculation on dates in places other than those I'm doing in October/November..... specifically Australia, I will try to be more specific.

An Australian tour has to be part of a Far East/Japan tour. This adds up to at least 6/7 weeks. That is not possible at the present time due to the Musical opening.

We have to tour those places in their Summer, our Xmas/Winter period. This is not good this year because of the Musical. Rehearsals start Dec. 27th. Next year, 2006/7, is hazy due to Nicholas' schooling.

Rest assured that at some time I will TRY to make it happen. When I cannot say. To be honest when this FFFT started being talked about, I stipulated that the Far East and South America.... along with Australia and Japan would be where I would choose to go, as I'd only been there once in some cases. I was "hoodwinked" a little by management assuring me that in addition to that, I'd have to do Europe and the USA. Then "we" got pregnant, and the latter part of the story changed for Mathew's birth. Then the Musical came forward to May, meaning rehearsal started earlier..... the domino principle.

It has nothing to do with desire... just priorities and practicalities. Thought you deserved an explanation OZCHICK and the Aussie crew.

AUGUST 2005

Hi all....

I've just come back from holiday.... nice, thank you for asking.....

I will get to the rest of the questions soon as I can. But.... I just had to post this....

Sometimes you hear about something 3rd hand, and it gets blown out of all proportion.... self being to blame mostly..... The Ricky Gervais Live 8 clip is such a thing. I went on his site and looked at it having read your links.... I thought it very funny.

Remembering that I am to be avoided by the hip and mighty if possible, he just had some good fun with the subject. We probably won't become penpals or anything, unless he insists.... but in the big scheme of things it was very witty.

Look out for room 101 though... I take no prisoners.

OCTOBER 2005

Dear All,

Sorry to have been on the missing list recently, but the Musical and the Tour have been taking up all the free time. Sitting here in Helsinki before the 2nd show, I thought I'd see what was up on the site and.... yes, you guessed it.... I saw some things about that old chestnut... "THE SET LIST"!!!

A couple of you have been querying the "right" to play INVISIBLE TOUCH without the rest of the G men.... some of you have jumped to the defence of same.... some of you have been spot on with your observation that I'm not going to please everyone too !!!! EVH (I think, and forgive me if I'm wrong)... was more than a little upset, and feared it would go to Vegas with my "horns, singers and 2 guitars".... well I hope that's not what has happened. It was not my intention. Though it DOES have horns, singers and 2 guitars !!!

A few reasons as to why I chose the new songs I did, and why some songs were replaced. Before doing so, remember that the premise of this last tour was for it to be a Retrospective/Greatest Hits thing...

The Both Sides saga has been on my mind since the first set list was put together, but at that time I just couldn't see where I could put something in. Most of that album consists of some of the most beautiful stuff stuff I've written, but those songs are also slow and dark. I was already fully subscribed in that area with ODDS, ONE MORE NIGHT, YOU'LL BE IN MY HEART, TRUE COLOURS etc. Any more would have sapped the energy of the show. I'd overlooked completely WE WAITAND WE WONDER as it never sounded that great live (to my ears). I came across it by accident and was surprised that it sounded so good. Lyrically it was also very current with Global Terrorism in our faces. Add to that the possibility of having a mini drum thing... the energy was obvious as soon as we started rehearsing it.

People in the crew who'd never heard it mentioned how strong it was.... so here we are and it's in the show. MISUNDERSTANDING was a huge hit in the States, but I felt (perhaps wrongly) that most people wouldn't think it was something special outside the USA. So I started to think of another G song. Nicholas has discovered Genesis now and wants to hear the stuff in the car.... NO SON OF MINE, JESUS HE KNOWS ME and INVISIBLE TOUCH are his favourites. The most obvious choice (to me) was INVISIBLE TOUCH as the energy of the song has always carried it. I wanted to put it into the "home straight" and it now lives with EASY LOVER. Someone said that I "didn't even write it"... well, excuse me but I DID write a lot of it.... the melody, lyrics and title were mine, and it was a song that I championed during the writing of the TOUCH album. It's always been one of my favourites. Yes there are Horns on it.... it comes in the last part of the show where everybody is on stage.... I've replaced the synth solo with a killer horn part and it is fantastic. Some G fans might hate it, but I can't help that.

I was under the impression that the G material was open to me to perform without a "he can't do it without the other guys" thing developing. I know that most of you are quite supportive of the G songs being performed, although it doesn't mean we're any closer to a reunion or anything. Nor does it imply I suddenly miss the chaps.... I've always missed the chaps.... me playing a song of ours has no bearing on that. I'm not short of material myself, I just thought it would be nice for us all to enjoy a song from those days. I won't be doing a Paul Mac thing, but I'm glad HE IS as those songs deserve to be played and enjoyed... no need to bury them and throw away the key just because the Beatles are no more. Incidentally he and his band play them fantastically well.

I MISSED AGAIN was dropped simply because something had to go and it was a mid tempo thing that I thought could go. I liked the old footage on the screens and Gerald's solo, but he has 3 solos anyway..... ODDS, NIGHT and COLOURS.

Anyway, these are the stories from the Horses Mouth. This is not meant to be a "pissed off" post, not at all. Just an informed insight into the whys and wherefores of choosing the songs.

I'll try to be back on the site for more Q and A's soon. However this tour is quite gruelling from a travelling POV and the Family are with me, so it takes time to settle in when we arrive etc.

I'll look forward to seeing your candid reviews of the shows...

Love from the Singer

JUNE 2006

I will be back answering Q’s soon, and my love life's not the reason I haven’t been doing it... it’s been the sheer workload of the show opening and interviews for the CD from it.
