New Gold Face Value, No Jacket and Hello!
« Thread started on: Feb 17th, 2011, 9:09pm » |

Has anyone else picked these up yet?
My copies arrived today, and I'm just getting to giving them a spin. I was curious if anyone else had them and what they thought.
I'm listening to In The Air Tonight as I type this. Sounds great. Really wide dynamic range and clearer bass.
More to come as I get deeper into the disks...

I have ordered both discs. Face Value hasn't arrived yet, But NJR has. I am playing NJR as I type this. I have compared each track from the normal release back to back with the Steve Hoffman versions - Wow!!! words can't describe how much better these new versions are! I always thought NJR was a great sounding CD until I heard this. The bass is much more kicking and the overall sound has a greater depth. Tracks like Only You Know And I Know and Inside Out will blow your socks off! Stunning! I just hope he does Hello I Must Be Going next, Do You Know Do You Care and Westside are crying out for this treatment. I urge you guys to get your (limited edtion) remasters while you can, before they turn up on Ebay at much inflated prices!

They've been released by Audio Fidelity. Available at Amazon or any specialty retailer such as Elusive Disc or Music Direct.

I ordered mine through Amazon.
I really think they're worth getting, especially since it seems unlikely we're going to see surround mixes anytime soon. These are definitely an improvement over the original disks. And I'm really hoping if these first two do well Hello, I Must Be Going will be next. There's an album really needing a sonic update.
It might be my personal preferences over the material, but I think Face Value is the better sounding remaster of the two. The overall clarity is improved, even though the original wasn't really lacking. The dynamic range is improved on every track, as is the overall fullness of sound, mostly from richer bass presence.
No Jacket Required is improved, mostly from better clarity and much more natural treble, instead of the ear-piercing high end of the original CD. What wasn't improved was the very narrow dynamic range of the original. The whole album was pretty compressed in the first place, and this remaster couldn't fix that, as it seems to be an issue with the original mix choices. It still has that "wall of sound" feel, although I'm not sure if taking that away would be too much of a change.

| I ordered both of mine from Amazon, Face Value still hasn't arrived yet! I played NJR again today - utterly fantastic! Going by the previous review of Face Value above, I can't wait to finally hear it!
One question though - are these releases official?
David (P.S. I am really hoping for a Hello I Must Be Going release!)

| Yes, I did just notice that they are made by Rhino. It was just that there was no official promotion, I stumbled on them by accident and the label didn't mention Virgin or EMI - it just didn't look right.

Typically, a company like Audio Fidelity decides which titles they would like to release and then approaches whoever owns the rights for permission. It seems that Rhino are currently responsible for the manufacture and distribution of Genesis related releases, in North America anyway, but Audio Fidelity are the ones who are responsible for producing these discs.

Face Value finally arrived today! As I also found with NJR the bass is kicking a lot more - but as you all know both albums have a radically different sound anyway, so the impact of the remaster is different. Right from the moment the drums kick in on In The Air... you can clearly tell the direction of the remaster. You won't be disappointed, these two releases really are worth buying again!

Not gold I'm afraid, but my local HMV store is selling Face Value, No Jacket Required and But Seriously for £10. I hasten to add that's not £10 each, but £10 for all three.

I've got No Jacket Required on vinyl and But Seriously on CD. But I'm not a big fan of Phil's solo career, so won't be purchasing these disks, gold or not gold.
