question Types of Listeners
« Thread started on: Feb 12th, 2018, 10:06am »

I’ve recently began to think that music listeners can broadly be placed into two distinct categories.

Type A listeners have an appreciation for music that is to a large extent detached from music itself. They listen to music, but only for some or all of the following reasons:
  • Direct lyrical relatability
  • Nostalgic value
  • Danceable background noise
  • Cold, technical admiration
Peter Gabriel’s comment about music “plugging directly into the senses” doesn’t really apply to these listeners. They are not moved directly by chords, as Tony Banks said of himself in a recent interview. They aren’t, as Steve Howe of Yes said last year, “able to distinguish the textures and the harmonies and the discords and the dynamics of the dramatic and the humble or the soft and the low and the quiet”. They can appreciate music as a vehicle for a message or purpose, but plain old music for music’s sake does not move them in any profound way.

Type B listeners appreciate melody, harmony, texture, dynamics and propulsive rhythms, or in other words, MUSIC itself on a direct, visceral level. A great lyric can enhance a song, but in terms of importance it’s at best a distant second to having a strong musical foundation. For such people, sonic and melodic beauty and power could almost be described as a spiritual experience.

It's probably more a spectrum than a black and white situation, but thinking about it honestly, which category would you say best describes yourself?

B for me. Music is present in every fiber of my body. I'd die without it.

I flatter myself that I am closer to B, but lyrics are very important to me.

I am not sure these are distinct categories. My wife, who is classically trained, can appreciate details in the music that take me several listens to even understand. And yet at the same time, she very much focuses on the lyrics.

Lyrics are not that important, though great singers can really make an album.. As COT and Ned know, I have a lot of foreign singing in some of my music collection, though most of this music is made up from great instrumentals accompanying these songs. 2 famous foreign bands would be Harmonium( French/Canadian) and PFM (Italian). Both singers representing great songs along with their singing..

Metal music and certain 90's and 2000 era pop bands, did not cut it for me at all. Possibly went into that ignorant mode and could not tolerate this music.. The music was either too bland or too noisy.

I don't agree with this. While I often don't pay full attention to the lyrics the first time around, there are many artists where the lyrics are the main reason I am a fan (e.g., Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Suzanne Vega) and also many where I find the lyrics at least equally important to the music. I can also appreciate music without understanding the lyrics (e.g., Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), but I don't see that as a contradiction with the above points.

Maybe I should of re-phrased my comment saying that, it's not always that important in music.. For example!..

Classical music
Certain Jazz bands

Bands such as Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells, Tangerine Dream and Vangellis are mainly all instrumental. Singing is not often required. wink

I was not referring to all forms of music here!! smiley

I'm Type B, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy Type A songs as well (I assume that Type A refers to catchy pop and rock music, Type B refers to more artistic stuff).
