Top 10 singers.

To be honest, I always think that great female singers win, hands down. I mean the likes of Karen Carpenter, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, and Linda Ronstadt. But, these, and others like them, tend to be hostages to the quality of the songs they are given, or choose. So, great though they may be, I have to rate the people who do a great job on songs I like.

So:
1/ Justin Hayward. The Moodies were lucky, having 4 great singers out of 5 members, making their backing vocals almost choir-like, But Justin covers the ground best!

2/ Andy Partridge. (XTC/Dukes) Great rock voice, particularly good at anger and aggression, but handles the gentle stuff well too.

3/ Peter Kingsbery (Cock Robin/solo). Much as Andy.

4/ Freddie!

5/ Rosemarie Precht (Cosa Rosa) bit of an obscure one, partly as she died in Jan 1991, partly as she sang in German (as you do, if you're German). She also played keyboards, having been a hired hand for NDW all-girl band “The Insisters” and Ulla Meinecke. Outstanding voice, and on her final album, there's a track, “Morgens Um Vier” (Mornings at Four) a very personal song, inspired by her sleeplessness due to the medication for stomach cancer, and the illness generally. Most would be depressed by it all, but she wrote a very upbeat song, counting her blessings, it mentions her birthday among other things. The song is like a vocal masterclass, covering everything from whispers, through talking, to singing in several ranges.

6/ Al Stewart

7/ John Fiddler (Medicine Head/British Lions/Box of Frogs)

8/ Tim Bowness

9/ James Warren (Stackridge/Korgis)

10/ Tim Booth (James)

You have any of her albums?

I got lucky, found her 2nd album, Kein Zufall, in the import section (The entire basement in 1986) of the London Oxford Rd Virgin Megastore. I recognised her name as she'd done backing vocals on a Nena album I had (Saw them live, Manchester Apollo in 1984) and bought it on a whim (1st purchase I ever made on a credit card, too!). One of the best buys I ever did. Turns out Nena herself had appeared on Rosa's first album, and of course, Reinhold Heil, Rosa's life and musical partner, had co-produced Nena. Rosa's stuff is better! wink

The basement of the megastore was subsequently made into a CD pressing plant, fully enclosed in glass (Has to be clinically clean) that the public could go and watch in action. It didn't stay long, but my initial copy of Voyage of the Acolyte was made there.

No, I haven`t. I must confess, that I didn`t know Cosa Rosa until you mentioned her in another thread about Neue Deutsche Welle and posted a link to a youtube video. I was a bit embarrassed at the time, that I hadn`t heard of her, as I used to be pretty much a fan of Nena, Nina Hagen and, of course, Spliff.

I'd strongly recommend "Kein Zufall", but prices on Ebay.de tend to be pretty high, the 2 later albums were reissued in 1997 (but they've been remastered from the original song tapes, and all fade a bit quickly, spoiling the effect on one or two songs.) but are now, I believe, deleted, so that tends to keep prices high, I guess.

Alternatively, there's a compilation, "Millionenmal" which has 7 of that album's tracks, 6 of the final one, and 3 of the 1st (she's not on all that album, it's a bit like Bridge over troubled water, both she and Reinhold were involved in other stuff at the time). Easier to find and pay for, and you get most of the stuff! smiley

INPO:

Peter Nicholls
Steve Hogarth (although I wish he wouldn't mumble so much!)
Floor Jansen
Devin Townsend (what a range!!)
Anneke Van Giersburgen
Damian Wilson
Stevie Nicks
Katherine Jenkins
Neil Diamond
Tasmin Archer

A mixture there from bands and acts I listen to a lot or not a lot, but all are unique and outstanding.

Excuse me, that's a mistranslation. "Morgens um vier" means "in the morning at four" (or just "4 AM") smiley

Fair enough, though I don't think the song was about one morning in particular, she was regularly awake due to the effects of her illness, apparently.
