Yeah, right... I was really saying that when I first registered... "Hi I'm new, oh and by the way I'm already sick of this place." rolleyes

And I'm not sick of this place, I just feel like the forum activity has hit an all-time low, but it's to be expected after so many years of discussion.

Same here. I sometimes also wonder if the 'death' of forums isn't because the younger audiences do their discussions on other platforms. While older members of this forum (as in, people who have been members for a long time) may have run out of things to say, newer fans are probably keen to have those old conversations for the first time.

It appears that social media such as Facebook now provides a platform for all things music across various threads and forums. Thus includes a lot of ex members of this forum, Demo Man, Choccy Sue, Gabbleratchet, Mike Bowler, Carl Chessman, James T, Steph Kennedy, Jon Novice and a few others. It is inevitable that people will migrate to places where a lot of bands are discussed at length. I seldom post much as I get a lot more response on these forums than I do on this one. Not meant in any way a criticism if the hardy stalwarts on this forum but more that they share my love of bands other than Genesis.

Ok people, maybe I was unfair for attacking a member for repeating himself but here's my take in this discussion:

I fairly disagree with all of you. I know forums that went really dead, meaning there's not a single new message for months - and still some of them came back to life. The reviving happens either way by news of the subject of the forum (favourite band/radio station/general topic etc.) or by new users who are more active and carry a positive attitude.

This forum has never been close to dead since it existed, however the meta-discussion about exactly this keeps recurring on a regular basis (just like that never-ending "facebook kills this forum" discussion). I feel I made my above statement countless times already and it's getting exhausting.

Why don't you all put your energy in discussing interesting stuff instead of moaning how the forum dies its zillionth death? It doesn't, we get new members every now and then and there's always something to talk about Genesis, the solo careers, other bands and artists, and a bunch of off-topic things.

And by the way: yes, there is one time I made this complaint too there's not enough life in the forum, that however referred particularly to the Anthony Phillips section. I was answered that Phillips fans prefer to "keep it quiet". If that is so then I wonder why there is a forum in the first place. Forums are for discussing and talking so let's use them. huh Keeping things silent and then complaining about it, that's what makes the forum die.

The main issue is that there's barely anything left to talk about anymore. […] We've discussed almost everything and several users have left because of that. The chance of Genesis reforming is microscopic as well, and raving about the greatness of their music feels rather pointless now, because we know that they're the best (or at least one of the best) bands to grace this planet.

Yes, that’s the sad but true reality. Genesis is a finished chapter. There will probably be no more reunion and even the chances of more archive releases are pretty slim. The disappointments of Some of the parts and Phil’s reissue campaign are in recent memory. Of course there is Steve’s solo career to talk about and some occasional activity from the other Genesis guys. I think this forum is a great place to share and discuss news, and for that reason I come here several times a week to see if something new has happened that I should know about. But there are seldomly any news to be excited about. Every now and then Phil will say in an interview that he would like to release new music and tour, and some days later his management will say it was a misunderstanding.

Please ask those questions and bring those topics up for discussion! There’s always some new perspective or some new detail of the rich Genesis world to analyze. One of the things I like with this forum is the depth and quality of the discussions. And for me personally, I don’t know anyone in real life who is more than a casual fan of the band, so this forum is my “living room” when I want to discuss my favourite band in detail!

I’m also a fan of Muse. That band is very active and so there should be a lot to talk about. On their official website there is a forum: http://board.muse.mu/index.php However, that forum bores me. There’s barely anything more than one-line comments. There is much activity on the Muse forum, but no substance and no depth. There are lots of Muse topics I would like to explore and discuss, but that forum is certainly not the right place to do that. It seems to be a place to go and cheer "Oh, yeah, Muse is the greatest ..." or "Oh, how I love that song" but not much more than that.

As I freethinker I’m strictly against such streamlined phenomena as Facebook. I also don’t want my entire Internet presence collected at one single website. I find it tragic that the once rich and various activity on the Internet is now being more and more channelled into Facebook. Facebook is eating the Internet and a new Internet is being created within Facebook. The dictators of George Orwell’s 1984 would have loved Facebook: all information on their subjects collected in one place – without using force! Facebook is a backward development not only of Internet, but of our entire civilization.

Well, the Eagles message board still thrives although the band no longer exists & I am easing my way out of it. It was always my primary focus for that band, which the Facebook groups never replaced. With Genesis I joined here & found the Facebook groups more lively (in some regards; the Phil Collins group is limited in many respects. People posting photos & saying hello to each other; not much talk about his music)!

It's interesting to read these responses. I will try & come up with something that will get people talking - even if it's only about favourite songs.

I can tel you personally why I'm not posting here much anymore. Look at my post above. I'm sick and tired of trying to work out how to post pictures and video on this forum. It's such a pain in the arse. Give me FB any day of the week. It's so user unfriendly for tablet users. I give up...

The link doesn`t work. You probably cut the end off or something, when you copied and pasted it into the message field. Probably that is why, the youtube window doesn`t show in your message.

Yes, the .com bit is missing, for one thing, but even putting that in, it doesn't work. Shame! I'm intrigued now! wink

The video doesn't exist. I pasted the link into a new browser tab and it says 404, video cannot be found. Either way it got deleted or your link is messed up besides the missing ".com".

I don't know how you're getting that URL, but the way youtube video URLs work is with youtube.com/watch?v= followed by a code. So if your code is Iwuy4hHO3YQ, then your link is http://youtube.com/watch?v=Iwuy4hHO3YQ. Thus:

I'm one of the folks who has posting a lot less here recently. It's in part because I've been very busy and in part because there's not a lot here I find interesting enough to engage in conversation about.

Frankly, I've ignored this thread until now because I assumed it was about an obscure band called Declining Activity. smiley
