Steve Hackett played lead guitar on a track called Living From The Inside Out. From an album called Sitting On The Top Of Time. Jim McCarty was a former member of Renaissance and The Yardbirds Dave was given a compilation album of Renaissance tracks and solo stuff today in the post

Did not know that SH had recorded with Jim. I like some of JMcC back catalogue particularly his work with Illusion (an off-shoot of the first Renaissance band line-up) and have other albums of his with Pilgrim (Gothic Dream and Search for the Dreamchild. both of which I have) which were ok but nothing great. These albums were on New World Records as were 2 under the Stairway band name ( I have Moonstone, Medicine Dance and Raindreaming)
Jim is well into the mystical new age style these days although I have not heard much on him for a number of years.

I believe Steve's initial involvement with McCarty stems back to the mid-80s when McCarty along with ex-Yardbirds Chris Dreja and Paul Samuel Smith formed Box of Frogs.
They released at least two albums. Steve guested on the second album.
Being a bit of a Yardbirds fan, I was sort of intrigued and bought the first album when it came out. I thought it was OK, it had one song which stood out and I quite liked. But overall I didn't find it compelling enough for me to buy the second album even after noticing Steve was one of the guest players.

I actually asked Steve about this a couple of days ago and he said it was over two years ago since he worked with him. When I see Steve on tour at Shepherds Bush I will ask him further on his involvement with Jim.

Didn't Steve Hackett list "Roger the Engineer" (featuring McCarty on drums) as one of his fave/most influential albums once?

I recall seeing a list of about a dozen albums (I don't know where) which Steve recommended or considered essential listening. It was an eclectic mix of rock, blues, jazz, folk, classical...
The ones I remember were Roger the Engineer by the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, one of the first two Paul Butterfield Blues Band albums (East-West perhaps?) and, interestingly enough, Smallcreep's Day.

Alas, he's only raving about Jeff Beck's qualities (the others were great, too, Steve!). Interesting comment about Clapton's finest hour, I'll have to dig out that Bluesbreakers album again. Ant-era-Genesis must have liked that one, too - they played Key to Love at their earliest concerts.
