It covers an excellent period right up until Stationary Traveller and includes some gems from The Snow Goose, Moonmadness, Mirage, Nude and you have Ice as well so all in all not a bad buy...yes Nige I say go for it...maybe later on you could then buy the catalogue bit by bit.... |

Thanks CW for your balanced reply. Knowing your excellent taste in music, I have just ordered this Camel compilation.

I would like to know what you think about this double CD compilation. It seems very good value and gets good reviews even though it only covers 1973-1985. OK, I know serious Camel fans will scoff at the idea of a compilation album and say buy the individual studio albums. But compilation albums do serve a purpose as introducing a band in a convenient package and can lead to buying the individual albums at a later date. So would you say this represents Camel well for a relative novice? All thoughts welcome. |

The Wikipedia page for this compilation says "Phil Collins - percussion". Anybody know which track(s)?

Phil was guest on the 'I can see your house from here' album....and the two tracks from that album that appear on the compilation are Hymn to Her and Ice...the same tracks also features Rupert Hine who produced some of Ant's albums....no wonder a lot of old Genesis fans also like Camel....

Tbh Phil's playing doesn't really stand out too much on the album. More blends in than anything. I often forget he's there!

I've been trying to do that with everything he's ever recorded....

It's a nice selection and good value ( as you said ) DAO. I really love the later Camel stuff myself, but maybe this selection will tempt you onto that too!

I think that disc 1 of the Lunar Sea compilation album - covering the first 4 studio albums - is uniformly excellent. 2 of the tracks are live versions and Lady Fantasy in particular is an awesome performance. Disc 2 - covering Rain Dances to Stationary Traveller - is still good but cannot match the consistent quality of disc 1. However I do really like Echoes, Ice (very Gilmour-esque electric guitar), Lies and Stationary Traveller.

Glad you're enjoying it...yes disc 1 is the best in the set but as you've already said there are some good ones on disc 2 as well...including one of my faves Long Goodbyes...it's such a catchy melody with a lovely solo at the end....
So you've had a taste of the early and middle periods...all that's left now is to get into the later period... ...I'm not sure if there is a compilation of that era out though...

I'll have to listen to Rajaz via Spotify. That album seems to get good reviews and be deemed "a return to form".

Apparently there is a Camel tribute band called "The Humps". And I'm being totally serious.
