When I refer to "solo career" take into account everything they've done in music outside of Genesis, including work in other bands or projects. Don't just look at their own individual discographies.

I voted for Phil Collins.

i chose Peter cause he has great solo albums, great movie soundtracks and He also plays on a couple tracks on Robbie Robertsons first album which I love.

If we take into account the massive success and the sheer number of collaborations, it should be Phil but I pick Peter simply because....I like it better, In trying to broaden it a bit but specifying that it is still higly subjective and in random order:

AP: nice, when I'm in the the mood, the Geese still remains a little gem but he pretty much remained in his comfort zone for decades and I feel he could have pushed the envelope a bit more.

TB: To me he is Genesis, backbone, soul, cornerstone whatever...His solo work still sounds a lot like Genesis but not as good, incredibly prolific and solid songwriter but when Mike, Phil or Peter aren't around something is missing. I have the feeling he is not a great collaborator and tends to stick to his guns too much.

MR: solid songwriting with occasional peaks both musically and lyrically. IMO a better collaborator than Tony, more flexible and versatile, picked his co-musicians wisely, particularly singers who are essential.

RW: I only have one CD, a pleasant listen, nothing more.

SH: I love his guitar playing and with the years I learned to appreciate it more and more, I have several of his records but to me as songwriter he is not as solid as the others and again I am being subjective. I see him mainly as a collaborator, somebody who doesn't get quite 'there' alone. I love the spirit of his music, I find the writing 'thin' at times. Oh, yes, I really don't like his singing.

PC: He apparently wrote in his book that he overdid it in the 80s. I agree. His collaborations from Brand X to Frida, Howard Jones, Plant, John Martyn, Clapton, Philip Bailey, you name it, sounded probably as a good idea at the time, personally not as great now and too much .
Incredibly gifted and versatile musician though, amazing talent.
His solo career....I still find FV great, I was still musically onboard with HIMBG, although lyrically perplexing at places, he lost me completely with No Jacket required and I have never fully recovered. Personally I find him a strong melodist but I loathe most of the lyrics. I was sometimes able to overhear what he sang because of how he sang it.

PG: to me at least the right mixture of commercial and experimental. Innovative and when commercial still tasteful. I was never crazy about he first two albums and I find the soundtracks OK but the rest is just mindblwing. wink wink grin wink

Ranking based on how much of their output I have...

1. Steve - I have the bulk of what he's released (besides live albums), including the GTR & Squackett albums & a collaboration with John Hackett
2. Ant - I have the majority of what he's released, including several collaborations
3. Tony - I have all his rock stuff, none of his classical
4. Phil - I have 3 albums & a few individual tracks, and 1 Brand X album (which I only listen to 3 tracks of)
5. Mike - I have his 2 solo albums & some individual tracks, plus 1 M+M album & an individual track
6. Peter - I have 1 album & a few individual tracks
7. Ray - I only have his first live album & 1 individual track

Even though the pace of his output has become glacial, it is still Peter for me too. He has always tried to innovate and do something new. There aren't many artists that have as diverse-sounding records as Peter's first 5 (6 if you count Passion, which to me is a fully realized album whereas Birdy repurposed some previous music).

Phil is probably next, given the quality of some of his solo work and the diversity of collaborations and side projects.

Mike and Tony are next, fairly equivalently. Each has produced strong material, with Mike being more mainstream. Both however have something a bit lacking at times compared to the group work.

Steve is a great player, but I am not captured by his songwriting. I find it hard to even remember his songs shortly after listening to them. Great in concert though.

Anthony, from my limited experience, seems to have stayed within a specific ballpark musically. So I have not found reason to purchase anything beyond The Geese and The Ghost.

I haven't followed Ray's solo career.

It's exactly the way I feel about it. I have several albums but I find most of the songs hardly memorable.
