So they must have had another copy as the original multi tracks were destroyed in a fire??

UPDATE
So apparently an old warehouse was being cleaned out and was found to contain thousands of multi tracks from Regent studios in the sixties including the Genesis sessions..

Interesting. Do ALL songs have the strings removed?

Most, but not all. They must not have found multitracks for all of them.

There's a photo of the tapes on the Movement FB page with the track listing.
I would post it here but it's too difficult...

I've been hoping for a long time that something like this would happen, but now that it actually has I'm pretty underwhelmed. I always defended FGTR on the grounds that King's overbearing arrangements were the main problem, thinking there could be another great Genesis album hidden underneath, but after listening to the new mixes several times, I'm just not feeling it. I guess the magic that pervades the next seven albums just wasn't there yet.

Still, it's been interesting to hear a version of this material closer to the band's original vision. In particular, the new mix of "One Day" with the acoustic intro is a massive improvement.

Help please! So is Qobuz the only place to buy the FLAC download? I had a look and it seems to imply you have to buy a subscription, or can I just purchase this CD only?

If you do a Google search for "Genesis 50 Years Ago + FLAC" you should find some other options.

You don't need a subscription, that's only for the streaming. Just open an account and buy the download you want.

So it looks like they found one reel of 4-track tape with only the odd numbered tracks from the album. That explains the curious selection of "50 Years..."

I still feel there's a much better album hiding in there, but it would need a much more radical remix than would be possible given that the multitracks are only 4-track. It's clear from the tape box that all the intruments were bounced down to one track at some stage, leaving a track each for vocals, backing vocals and the brass and strings - I guess that's where the damage was done, with the acoustic guitars and piano prominent, as per King's vision for how they should sound, and everything else buried in the background. Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done to alter that now, so any remix is going to be pretty limited in what can be achieved. Having said that I think they're a big improvement (with the exception of the vocal-only tracks which are a pointless exercise in barrel-scraping) and I hope there's more to come - it would be interesting to know what else they have - does Visions of Angels still exist and did they ever record the full length version of A Place to Call My Own, or just the coda that appears on the album? It would be nice to think that one day someone might assemble all that remains and give it a coherent physical release. It deserves a bit more than this download-only seemingly random selection of tracks, as interesting as they are.
