Another question: if your favourite era of Genesis hadn't happened, do you think you'd still be a fan?

That's a very good question.

My favourite era of Genesis is the SEBTP-WAW era (previously, it was the Hentschel era, i.e. ATOTT-Duke)

However, it was actually the first disc of TPC that got me into the band in the first place. The second disc really helped as well.

The two albums that really rocketed the band to the top of my favourites list were ATOTT and WAW. Without those two albums, I would have considered Genesis just a very good band - and not the best one of all. And without them I would have never have been able to get into the Gabriel era (which, at the time of getting into Genesis about 10 years ago, was too complicated for me to enjoy).

So if my favourite era never happened, my favourite era would've been ATTWT-WCD. I never would have learned to enjoy CAS without getting into music of the Gabriel era.

So yes, I'd still be a fan, but without those four solid gold albums - SEBTP, TLLDOB, ATOTT and WAW - Genesis likely wouldn't be my favourite band and I certainly wouldn't be here on the forum today.

I haven't given the live albums enough of my time to rate so will just consider studio albums.

So probably middle, then late, then early for me. I enjoy almost all of the middle stuff from the OP, apart from The Lamb (Other than a few staple songs, I find it too long winded and self indulgent), and Abacab (although it's growing on me a bit). ATOTT, WAW, ATTWT, Duke are all favourites, in that I can listen to the entire album without skipping (Aside from Alone Tonight which is shite).
The late period contains We Can't Dance so HAS to come second at least for me. Driving The Last Spike is my all time favourite song, as well as containing some other great songs.
Early period, I LOVE SEBTP, but apart from that, my opinion of early Genesis is the same as The Lamb. The odd song or two on each album is good, but otherwise I just can't get into them. A bit 'too' prog for me, if that makes sense.
