xx What is your favorite era of Genesis?
« Thread started on: Aug 31st, 2016, 3:00pm »

This forum seems sort of dead, but I see people logged in and posting occasionally...so maybe if I start a topic, the people that are here will respond and it can be like an active forum?

I see Genesis as roughly divided into three eras...

Early: From Genesis to Revelation through Selling England by the Pound (1969-1973)

Middle: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway through Three Sides Live (1974-1982)

Late: Genesis through Live Over Europe 2007 (1983-2007)

...you can divide them however you want--it might make more sense for you to put The Lamb in the early period because it's the last Gabriel album...but to my ears, the The Lamb has more in common musically with the albums that come after it.

My favorite period is probably the middle period. The music in this period just seems to have a very big, spacious sound. Squonk, Down and Out, Deep in the Motherlode, Man of Our Times, and Dodo/Lurker all have the sound I am talking about.

I started with the late period & that is still my favourite era, with the middle period second. I am still getting to know the early music.

I don't think I would group the Lamb in with the middle period, though I agree it is starkly different to the albums before it in many ways.

Overall I also think the middle period is my favourite, yet the 1970-74 albums have more of a wild, experimental feel to me which is just as exciting. Actually I think the series of albums from Selling England to Wind reach a level of perfection (bar a few moments on the Lamb) that just eclipses those before and after for me.

NB: despite what my name may suggest, I was not born in 1972 tongue

Sorry to be awkward, but I'd go with the four man era, as in ATOTT and W&W, the latter being the best album they ever did, in my opinion of course.

I would choose the middle era. I would have added SEBTP to the middle era though.

I like the first era most, very closely followed by the second one with the third one to finish.

The first era includes SEBTP, which is my favorite Genesis album. All the other albums in that period, except FGTR are classics.

The second era includes Trick and Wind, which really stand out and make it a bit hard, to put this era on number two.

The third era has We Can`t Dance and CAS, which are highlights, but altogether the music in that era cannot really compete with the early stuff. Which means, moaning on a very high level.

100% what you said in your words. Was not a big favourite of the latter years. Lambs is an album equally I don't enjoy.

1976-1981 or, in other words, the albums included in the blue box set.

peter had left the band and phil hadn't become a superstar yet. this proved that the other genesis members were talented songwriters, because the albums from those years are just fantastic.

1:Early
2:Late
3:Middle

I feel as if the early and late albums have more emotion to them. The middle ones, save for ATOTT and W&W, I feel are sterile and colder, yet they are some of the most experimental and noteworthy of the Collins era. That's just how I feel.

What always disturbed me about And Then There Were Three and Duke is the sound of the electric piano. It always sounds slightly out of tune and artificial. For me it was a revelation, when Tony put it to the attic from Abacab onwards. I think, I would enjoy And Then There Were Three and Duke far more, if this piano wasn`t on it.

Hackett era for me 1971-77.

If forced to pick with the way the eras are divided in the original post, I'd probably go middle era, although I don't care all that much for the last few albums in that time frame.

I have liked each era more at different times in my life. For the longest time I wouldn't even listen to late period Genesis because everyone else hated it. But when Genesis and Invisible Touch came out, I listened to them over and over.

I have found recently that as I revisit each era, I like them all. You just have to drop your preconceptions about the music and listen to it with an open mind.
