...even though I:
1. Hate the cover art
2. Already own every track, except "Wake Up Call"
3. Find some of the solo track selections odd
4. Am annoyed at the exclusion of Ant. Really, I'd rather they had dropped a Genesis song or three to make room.

But Amazon is now selling it for $14.99 US, not bad for a three CD set. At least I get a new booklet out of the deal. Even though I hate the cover, the overall package isn't bad with the 'younger' and 'older' pics of the band and pics of all the album covers represented. Truly, a confession from a Genesis junkie!

Has anyone actually sat down and listened to the whole thing? Does it flow at all?

I have been listening to the whole of it on my computer so I didn't even realize when a new CD began. It's nearly 4 hours of music which I found a lot to digest in one go but I had to admit it flows very well except for a few times, I ended up altering the track list slightly to make it perfect for me.

Of course the selection is not what I personally would have chosen but I could not have done any better given all it is supposed to be: 1.) take at least one song from each album (minus FGTR) 2.) pick 3 solo songs for the five of them 3.) put everything in chronological order 4.) take care to choose the solo songs in a way nobody has all his 3 songs on 1 CD only 5.) squeeze it all on 3 CDs and make them all close to 80 minutes full - it IS a real challenge to stick to all of this and succeed, so looking at it this way they did a fantastic job (yes I know...).

I have listened to it in the car, if that counts, each CD in turn, and I did think it flowed, but at the time a lot of the music was new to me. I agree about some of the solo selections, particularly Easy Lover. I like the cover - I actually bought a T shirt from the Genesis store...

I got it some time last year as I saw it in a shop for only 7. I got it mainly for completeness and also because I like having the standalone versions of Cinema Show and NYC - handy to put on compilations of my own.

If it hadn't been so cheap I'd not have bothered. I rarely like commercial compilations and I find the concept, with the solo stuff mixed in, frankly bizarre. Plus I really dislike chronological compilations.

I'm glad I've got it, but there's no way I'd ever attempt a straight listen-through of it.

Oh and yes, the cover art - and the title, come to that - are terrible.

It's not worth my time when I already own most of their albums (the ones I don't have I can listen to on Spotify or YouTube). The only compilation albums of theirs that I enjoy listening to is Turn It On Again: The Hits, but that's only for the nostalgic reason of remembering my parents play that when I was young.

Hi Henry - any idea when that photo was taken? I'm not sure I've seen it before.

I'm assuming it is PG and not TMB (it looks almost too good to be from 1973-75 though).

I did a quick search for an image using the phrase "Gabriel old man".
I chose this one mainly for clarity and size. It may very well be Denis from TMB, but it's irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.

I'm listening to R-Kive today. I'll post my impressions in a few hours when I'm done.

My first impression is that I looked at the cover many times before I realized the shadows of the letters form a man's face. Is there anyone else who hasn't noticed this?

Lots of folks don't like the cover, but I think it's a fascinating image.

Those are really cool, thanks for sharing. I like the cover even more knowing that the shadow is legitimate and not created through digital trickery.

I enjoyed R-Kive, but I thought disc 3 generally suffered a bit.

It seems that someone must have told them, "Choose two that are your best and one that you think is unfairly overlooked."

The tracks I enjoyed least were the Tony Banks tracks. I am reminded why I stopped following his career. He has horrible taste in vocalists and I wish he would just sing everything himself, as he is much better at it than the people he chooses for his solo albums. I stopped following him around the time of "Soundtracks," but I have all of his albums on vinyl up to that point. I will probably get around to digitizing them at some point. His classical track was much better, but I don't feel compelled to buy the album (much in the same way I will probably never buy Paul McCartney's classical albums).

The Mike Rutherford stuff is enjoyable. I also stopped following his career in the late 80s but have all of his early work on vinyl or cassette. I recently bought Smallcreep's Day on CD (I have it on cassette as well), which I consider his best album. The Mike + The Mechanics stuff is nice but it's like candy, there is no real substance. I might pick up a "best of" CD at some point just so I can have those songs that used to be played on the radio. I will probably digitize my old Mike records as well.

The R-Kive compilation was very good overall, especially the first disc and most of the second.

I enjoyed hearing the original mixes of Abacab and the songs from Genesis and Invisible Touch. I will have to compare their sound later this week to the 1999 version of Turn It On Again - The Hits.
