I bought Songbook when it was released. I agree that the performances were somewhat depressing. Watching the bonus performances on Songbook was actually the moment when I realized that I realized they were getting old. Especially Phil seemed kind of stiff. However I enjoyed the performances anyway. After all, my motto is "Anything now" and it was fantastic to see the three of them perform some songs again.

Some [!] of the parts was a missed opportunity. I hope it was a lesson for the mangement that you can't just let any media guy do the editing of a documentary of almost five decades of band history.

Good to know I'm not the only one who had that reaction to Songbook. Something about the 90's made me lose my interest in Genesis for a while.

It's kind of like how Tony Banks says in Sum of the Parts that by the time the third single from We Can't Dance rolled around everyone just suddenly lost interest.

Only I had already lost interest before that album.

Now I love everything they did...I guess I just had to get a little older.

I just rewatched Songbook and I don't know what I was thinking when I sold it back. It's quite good. I think at the time I was only into the early albums and thought their ship had sailed. Now I'm able to enjoy the pop side again like I did when I was a teenager.

And you thought sum of The Parts was bad... no idea who is responsible for this monstrosity, but clearly their 'talking heads' people failed the audition for Brian Pern! smiley CHP guy's comments point out some real howlers...

Had to laugh at around 5.30 mark when the guy being interviewed, with a short gap between, is mirror imaged! grin

That’s an apt comparison, particularly the wonderfully dismissive comment: “Ray Wilson was, and still is - probably – a fine singer”.

And “Supper’s Delight” conjures up an improbable mash-up of “Supper’s Ready” & “Rapper’s Delight” that could have come straight from the Brian Pern duets episode cheesy
