cheesy Elton John or Billy Joel
« Thread started on: Jul 8th, 2014, 03:08am »

Two singer/songwriter/pianists, roughly the same age and with music careers running approximately in parallel. But whose music do you prefer? With the proviso that I am merely a "greatest hits level" fan of both musicians, I tossed a coin and Billy won today. If I tossed a coin tomorrow, Elton could well win. cheesy

Well I voted for Billy Joel but only because I realize I listened to him a little bit more than Elton John. But in fact it's a tie, if I threw a coin for this it would be standing on its edge.

I like many of Elton John's songs, but Billy Joel's charisma can't be beaten.

Elton John beats the pants off BJ any day, IMO.

I've seen Elton in concert many, many times going back to the GYBR days up to his Red Piano gigs at Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas a few years ago. His catalogue of music is unbeatable.

Love 'em both.

I prefer BJ's piano playing which is nothing short of sheer brilliance......New York State Of Mind piano is so good it could pass as an instrumental shocked

During Elton's prime early 70s period he was so consistently brilliant. Even if Bernie Taupin's lyrics were questionable at times, the music was always top notch. As a result, I have nearly all of his earlier albums. However, his output in the past few decades has been pretty underwhelming, save Songs From the West Coast.

Billy is a more versatile musician, covering a broader range of styles over time. But although I like stuff from pretty much all of his albums, there are fewer of them that I find essential.

So I'll give the edge to Elton.

Elton lost me at Rock of the Westies and Billy with Glass Houses, but I think much of their work in the '70s was brilliant. With all due respect to Nigel--and his comment about being a "greatest hits fan"--I can't think of two other artists (okay, maybe Genesis wink ) for whom the hits are less representative of their overall work. Y'all keep yer "Bennie and the Jets" and "Only the Good Die Young" and gimme "Grey Seal" and "Summer Highland Falls" anytime!

That said, I vote in this poll for Elton. So much of his early music hits my brain as deceptively-simple genius on an almost Beatle-esque level. smiley

Fair enough. My Billy Joel compilation does include the non-single Scenes From An Italian Restaurant. Would this track be in your top 10 or top 20 Bill Joel songs?

Yessir! Very good song, I might rank it at around #10. smiley

That song, and the album The Stranger, hold a special place in my life--though I prefer his three previous albums--as it was released at the start of my senior year in high school and dominated the radio airwaves that entire year.
