Inspired by the "worst songs ever" thread.

It's easy to talk about "bad songs," but what is it that usually makes you not like a song?

In my case it's the following (in this order):
(1) Lyrics that are poorly written/dumb/etc.
(2) Lyrics that have a stupid/bad message
(3) Music that's bland, dull, pedestrian, etc.
(4) Badly sung, even by my fairly forgiving standards.

Well you have me pondering on this one. I've never thought that much about it believe it or not. Certainly songs I find offensive. Songs that I really hate are songs that I have been unable avoid but what ingrediants make them bad in the first place is different.

I agree with your list but a song may contain points 1, 2, and 4, but may also contain character and can be fun.

Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" is quite a nice little tender love song but when those lyrics are yelled in a souless manner it seems to me just bizarre, so I think a mis match between lyrics, sentiment, and style can be a contributer to a bad song. I have no idea how anyone can like the Whitney Houston version is beyond me , but lots of people do.

I know I sound like an old man but all those modern chart songs sound like one big bland soup with nothing individually, standing out as awful or great.

So I'll be pondering over this thread one for a while now.

John Lennon considered to be bad most of Paul McCartney's songs, and quite a few of his own. shocked

Here's is an example of a bad song, in my honest opinion. I can't put my finger on why I hate it so much - I just find it musically inept, badly constructed and boring with a ridiculous video. What on earth were they thinking?

Sadly, I have to agree... to an extent. It's far from "horrible" to me, and the video is somewhat humorous, but when the song is compared to the mountain of pop/rock classics Queen made, it's very disappointing. undecided

I love the song. Remember the first time I heard it, was just driving into the town that was our Honeymoon location - Appropriate? smiley

The video was slightly dictated by Freddie's state of health, of course.

Not one of Queen’s best songs admittedly (the competition is far too strong) but I always found the video a rather haunting, poignant depiction of an 80s AIDS victim – seen as rather peculiar, slightly sinister, shunned by others & driven slightly mad by having a taboo condition that they couldn’t tell the public about. That wasn’t generally known when the video appeared, but Queen knew it when they were filming & it must have influenced the video.
