question Paul Weller
« Thread started on: Jan 14th, 2014, 10:25am »

I hated The Jam at the time. I have now mellowed towards them but still wouldn't call myself a fan. I didn't like The Style Council at the time and I still don't like them. However, when I first heard Sunflower, I just thought "Wow!" The only solo album I own is the excellent Stanley Road, but I suppose I should buy some more. Maybe a compilation album of his solo work would fit the bill. Clearly my vote here goes to his solo career. How about anybody else? smiley

Are we ever going to make any more use out of the Music Polls board? Sorry to be pedantic but I feel that opening non-Genesis pollls elsewhere defeats the purpose of that board. undecided

Sorry, a honest mistake. Maybe a moderator will move it to that subforum. That said, this was intended to open up a discussion about a popular artist, albeit with a poll attached. wink

shocked shocked

The Jam win this by a mile although I do like some of Paul Wellerís solo stuff. The Style Council had their moments, but the best of them (probably Long Hot Summer) fall way short of Thatís Entertainment, let alone The Eton Rifles.

PS Iím happy to mix polls & discussion, it makes it more interesting.

grin. It's just a comparison to help you understand! I have a lot more love for Phil C than The Style Council!

Liked all including The Style Council but my vote has to go to his solo career. Some incredible albums grin

I enjoyed "Weller at the BBC" from Friday night on BBC Four. However, I fast forwarded through the Style Council section! grin

I'm a huge fan of both The Jam and The Style Council, and in fact I own copies of all the main recordings by each.

Strangely, although I like Weller's solo material, I haven't made the effort to get more familiar with his work. I think I only have one of his albums.

A friend, who is a massive fan, invited me to see a couple of Weller concerts. I enjoyed them and bought quite a few of his albums. 22 Dreams (quite psychedelic) is my favourite and Stanley Road is also excellent. The others that I own are Heavy Soul and As is Now, as well as his solo live album, Days of Speed.

I prefer his solo stuff but still enjoy The Jam's hits, every now and then.

Even though it's apparently cool to be negative about Phil.

Hi there

The Jam were a great band, probably one of the most exciting I have ever seen. I really couldn't understand his decision to split them up and then go on to form the blandness that was The Style Council. His solo stuff since then really leaves me cold too I'm afraid.
