question Most disappointing song exclusion
« Thread started on: Oct 25th, 2017, 06:55am »

I know I only recently made a thread about really good "trapped" or "stranded" Genesis songs that never made it onto their studio albums, but I thought it would interesting to see which one is the most disappointing exclusion.

I expect that the most voted-for option will be Inside And Out not being on WAW, but personally, although I love that song, I feel as though its sound is already covered well on WAW so adding the track to the album wouldn't add to it much. Thus, I chose Do The Neurotic. That song is stunning in how progressive it is for that era - in fact in two ways it's more proggy than Domino since it's entirely instrumental and doesn't have a "love song" section.

Fitting it onto IT is easy - just move Anything She Does to the end of the first side and then put DTN right at the beginning of the second. Alternatively the track listing could be:

1. Invisible Touch
2. Throwing It All Away
3. Land Of Confusion
4. In Too Deep
5. Anything She Does
6. The Brazilian

7. Tonight Tonight Tonight
8. Domino
9. Do The Neurotic

Adding DTN to IT would not only have improved an already pretty good album in my opinion, but also I'm sure it would have made it better received by its detractors.

It's Yourself, with Evidence of autumn a close second!

You might recall is imo easily better than more than half of the songs on Abacab. Honorable mention: Open door on Duke.

Thoughts on the various exclusions:

FOXTROT - Tracks 2 thru 4 are not favorites of mine, so I think Twilight Alehouse would have been a good inclusion. You'd have to leave off Get 'Em Out By Friday to make room for it, though, and you couldn't use that for a B-side. (Never mind that TA was actually also too long for that.)

A TRICK OF THE TAIL - It's Yourself is a treasure, but it's enough of an oddity that I can't picture it as an album track. Plus, would its inclusion mean that Los Endos would lose its intro?

WIND & WUTHERING - I agree that Inside & Out would have been a good inclusion. (Match & Pigeons, on the other hand, are so far from being W&W material that it's downright funny.)

AND THEN THERE WERE THREE - I enjoy both Day and Vancouver, but I have a very hard time picturing either of them on the album.

DUKE - Nothing against either Evidence or Open Door, but they just don't seem to me like they'd belong on DUKE, which I consider one of the most perfectly sequenced Genesis albums.

ABACAB - You Might Recall got my vote; I rank it well above much of the album. Paperlate would have been a good inclusion as well. On the other hand, Naminanu (which I'm quite fond of), Submarine & Virgil belong as outtakes.

INVISIBLE TOUCH - I think any of the three outtakes (Neurotic, I'd Rather Be You, Feeding The Fire) would have been a good inclusion.

WE CAN'T DANCE - I think On The Shoreline & Hearts On Fire are great songs, much better than some that made the album.

CALLING ALL STATIONS - Anything Now is one of my favorite Genesis outtakes and, IMO, would have been a good inclusion. As for the other 7 outtakes -- no.

Surprised there's no love for Twilight Alehouse or Inside and Out (yet). My faves out of this listing. I can't decide between the two and haven't voted yet.

I thought Twilight replacing either Get em Out by Friday and/or Time Table would make Foxtrot a stronger album. Inside and Out is a little tougher as I think W&W flows pretty well as it is. Even what I think are the weaker tracks such as Your Own Special Way and All in a Mouse's Night seem to fit well on the album as a whole.

in my world, it's yourself includes a bit of los endos, and not the other way round as it's supposed to be. cheesy i've always found that section out of place at the end of it's yourself.

I don't personally find them GREAT but I agree they are OK and vastly better than at least half a dozen songs on the album.

You mean that ending section, following the vocal part, that comprises a full 2/3 of the song? Not much left of IY if you take that out!

I'm pretty sure TA was recorded during the FOXTROT sessions. Now, Happy The Man is sometimes associated with NURSERY CRYME -- though I'm pretty sure it was recorded in 1972 as well.

I went with Evidence Of Autumn but Twlight Alehouse would have been next.
