xx Looking for Someone (and PG solo)
« Thread started on: Mar 29th, 2017, 08:56am »

Looking for Someone has often struck me as being one of the strangest / most anomalous tracks in all the Genesis catalogue. It sounds so little like any other G track from the early years. It's proggy of course, but it has a feel of other contemporaneous bands like Family, Rare Bird, Atomic Rooster (but less overblown). It seems to me they never really attempted anything like this again.

Lyrically as well, it's very different from nearly everything the Gabriel line-up recorded. The lyrics are angsty, personal lyrics - they don't tell a story, or paint a picture. In a weird kind of way they seem to me to prefigure the lyrics on The Lamb ("Lost in a subway, I guess I'm losing time") but even on the Lamb the lyrics are in the voice of the Rael character. Looking for Someone seems uniquely personal.

Finally, and again apart from a few tracks on The Lamb, this is one of the very few PG Genesis tracks that strongly reminds me of solo PG stuff. Again, this is mainly because of the lyrics, which could be from a song on any of the first four PG albums (e.g. "You're such a fool, your mumbo-jumbo never tells me anything")

I don't know who wrote the lyrics, but it's intriguing to speculate as to why Genesis never really attempted anything similar to this again - and indeed why it took Peter until The Lamb to write any lyrics with a similar personal slant.

Thoughts?

I believe Peter wrote the lyrics to LFS. What they most remind me of, for some reason, is the lyrics to "That's Me" (which, as far as I know, Peter did not write).

It's a real favourite of mine, and a great opener. I agree it has a very different feel to it and stands out from their output at the time. I agree it doesn't really tell a story, but I do think it paints a picture, I get from it a sense of someone lost and frustrated in some way, metaphorically trying to find a path while at the same time trying to brazen it out and be defiant - a very mixed-up person.

I too think that the lyrics were Peter's. It's one of the songs that gets talked about the least by the band members. And yet Charisma pressed up the promo 45 with this as the A side. Wasn't it also on a US sampler released before Trespass was released in America?

I've always interpreted it as a reaction to the Decca period and the false dawn that that represented. However I confess it's been years since I thought about it. I think the lyric is allegorical and not a story to be interpreted literally.

Interesting thread though.

Not that I'm aware of, there are a couple of American acetates in existence although whether either of these are genuine is open to discussion.
The only official release is as you say, the UK Charisma promo b/w Visions Of Angels.

There was a Buddah sampler realised in the US before Nursery Cryme that contained a 50 second excerpt of The Fountain Of Salmacis, could that be what you're thinking of?

No this was issued before Trespass was commercially available in America and it's the full album cut. It's an odd record as I don't think it bears a catalogue number. The sleeve features a naked woman on all fours - not what you'd associate with Genesis music. It's on ABC Dunhill and it's called Just a Taste. You can see an image of the sleeve at the Genesis Museum.

My apologies, I'd assumed you were talking about a 7" 45 single, sorry.
Interesting curiosity though smiley

No worries, Dougal.

There is also an edited version of the track on an extremely rare Japanese Sampler from April 1971. I'd love to hear that version. That has to be one of the most obscure Genesis tracks ever issued. I mean what were they doing on a Japanese sampler that early in their career?

My favorite version of this song is the one from their BBC Sessions. I love how raw and unpolished it sounds compared to the version on Trespass! cool

It's decent but it's never been one of my favourites from the band. In fact, it's quite forgettable and even after several listens I can't really remember how most of it goes. I agree though that it's abstract, mysterious and difficult to accurately define. To me, the song has always represented the band emerging from the eerie FGTR chrysalis; in other words, their raw and haunting first album sound gradually transforming into their more melodious and pastoral second album sound.
