I have SEBTP on an old vinyl LP, and the label on side two has the last track as "3. THE CINEMA SHOW - AISLE OF PLENTY".

I have the same thing.

The Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty
The Fountain of Salmacis
Los Endos
Duke's Travels/Duke's End
Supper's Ready - part VII: Aching Men's Feet (As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs)
Afterglow
Follow You Follow Me
It's Gonna Get Better
One Man's Fool
Fading Lights
The Knife
The Brazilian
it
Another Record
A Place To Call My Own

A few comments to this:

First of all, the upper six songs (to Afterglow) were hard to rank at all, I see them all on the same high level.

- A Place To Call My Own: very weak song on a weak album (though it has its charme); this one is particularly forgettable since it is not even a "proper" song for me, it is rather a fragment of something that could have become a song in its own right.

- The Knife: this ranks quite low in my list because imho it is misplaced on this album. I love The Knife but only as a song on its own; on Trespass it goes completely against the flow of the album so as an album closer I think it was a bad choice.

- Fountain of Salmacis: perfect, no more words needed

- Supper's Ready: I have a problem treating the whole 22 minutes of SR as the "closer" - when Lover's Leap begins we're only in the middle of the album! So the actual album closer to me at least is only the final part of Supper's Ready. I know I'm bending the rules here (shouldn't I count just the Squonk reprise of Los Endos as a closer then?...) but a vast part of this epic is far from closing the album, it is still part of the main substance of the album before it closes. Now, Aching Men's Feet on its own is glorious but it has to rank below complete songs such as Salmacis.

- The Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty: this is the opposite, Aisle of Plenty just doesn't count as a song on its own for me. It is inseparable of Cinema Show, both together as one song is of course a sublime closer.

- it: this could likewise be listed together with In The Rapids - but these two don't form an inseparable unit imho. On the contrary: In The Rapids so deserves a proper ending, instead it is just cut off. (One more of the many issues I have with The Lamb - why leave songs fragmented without proper endings or at least fitting transitions? Hairless Heart has the same problem). So it's just it on its own. For Genesis standards just an average song and it doesn't really bring the album to an end so as a closer it wasn't the best choice.

- Los Endos: that one doesn't need any explanation

- Afterglow: again: I could have listed Unquiet Slumbers/in that quiet Earth/Afterglow, imho this forms a cohesive unit and works as a closer altogether perfectly - then again, Afterglow can stand on its own very well too. Afterglow is the closer of the closer if you want, no matter what it's one of their best album closers.

- Follow You Follow Me: unlike many I regard this as a quite a nice closer

- Duke's Travels/Duke's End: and again, I could have listed just Duke's End; however, Duke's End on its own would rather be a closing section of the bigger unit and doesn't stand so well on its own as Afterglow does. Both of them together are a perfect ending for that album.

- Another Record: sorry, this one just sucks. An uninteresting final song, it lets the album stop but it doesn't end it.

- It's Gonna Get Better: one of the strongest songs from the album and imho it "saves" the second side, the preceding songs are a little too weak and miss creating a build-up to the final.

- The Brazilian: on this album it belongs to the better moments of the album but that doesn't mean much

- Fading Lights: a great closer, I am a little unhappy with the synth solo but that's just me.

- One Man's Fool: one of the best songs on that album, unfortunately it gets too overshadowed by the sameyness of the songs before. On its own it is a great song, as a closer it doesn't get a chance to stand out, the preceding songs should be more different.

i agree with you. supper's ready is like russia, which begins in europe and ends in far east asia. it would be odd to say that it's the most eastern country in the world. likewise, the whole supper's ready shouldn't qualify as an album closer.

The Cinema Show / Aisle of Plenty
Apocalypse in 9/8 / As Sure as Eggs is Eggs (Aching Men's Feet) wink
Los Endos
Afterglow
The Fountain of Salmacis
Duke's Travels / Duke's End
Fading Lights
The Knife
Follow You, Follow Me
It
The Brazilian
It's Gonna Get Better
One Man's Fool
Another Record
A Place to Call My Own

I like the idea of not including the whole of "Supper's Ready" as the closer - but I think Apocalypse/Eggs is a more 'complete' finale than just Eggs.

I also agree with Schrottrocker that the top six (I have the same ones but in a different order) are pretty much perfect.

As for the others, they're all pretty great except "Another Record" is a bit naff and "A Place to Call My Own" is nice enough but insubstantial and not that interesting.

I would prefer to have "Like it Or Not" as the closer to Abacab over "Another Record" (and indeed the former closes my extended playlist of Abacab that includes all the non-album tracks).

Well, if I'd known there would be so much dispute over what the closers actually were, I'm not sure I would have started this thread! grin
