You gotta love typos laugh I meant more of a pop song, but now that I think of it, MOOT isn't even much of a "pop" song at all.

I didn't buy this album until about 1990 -10 years after it came out, I had been put off by Turn It On Again and the awful Misunderstanding. When I finally did buy it I discovered the rest of the album is very good but its the last good Genesis album for me. What came next was an abomination...

Man Of Our Times is still probably my favourite song on Duke, though there are other contenders, such as Duke's Travels, Duchess and Heathaze. I've often wondered how this album would have sounded if Steve Hackett had still been in the band. It might have been a top five Genesis album for me with him on board.
It's also one of the few post-Gabriel albums that I can actually imagine Peter singing on. Most of the songs would suit his voice very well I think.

For no real reason I must just share the fact that I listened to “Duke” today and how much I love the album. I’ve listened to it before and it’s grown on me over the past month or so. ‘Turn It On Again’ has always been my favourite Genesis single (of any era). But the hidden depths of “Duke” just keep on getting deeper. It might just be my favourite sounding Genesis album if not my out right favourite. It came alive tonight on my half hour walk home in the rain* when I listened to the second ‘side’ (tracks 7 - 12).

Stunning stuff!

I love this album as it has many underrated songs on it. Even the album as a whole is underrated! Here is my take on it:

Behind The Lines - Love the intro as it explodes through the speakers!
Duchess - It's okay, but I don't rate this as high as others do.
Guide Vocal - A nice mysterious song with piano only like the old days.
Man Of Our Times - Ok, but too repetative.
Heathaze - Never understood why it was so liked as I skip this one.
Turn It On Again - The first Genesis song I heard, love it!
Alone Tonight - Love the acoustic aspect of it and not a bad song.
Cul-De-Sac - One of the underrated hero's on the album!
Please Don't Ask - This is another one I skip.
Duke's Travels/Dukes End - A great suite to finish the album!

Personally, I have never been under the impression Duke was underrated by fans, au contraire, I would say it is quite revered and I hardly heard criticisms towards it.
I love it and I loved how they bounced back to form after what was imo a bit of a bland album. Also, there some new elements creeping in, case in point TOA but the core of their music remains intact. Strictly for my taste, it would have been even stronger an album with Open Door and Evidence of autumn on it, replacing PDA and Misunderstanding.

For that matter, I'm glad they didn't do that because if it wasn't for Misunderstanding and Turn it on Again, I wouldn't have heard Genesis on the radio so early. I read somewhere the record company wanted Alone Tonight as the first single and the band was totally against it. I think they made the right choice! smiley

Definitely. Misunderstanding was an obvious single, brought a new audience to the band and there was no way they were going to discard it. It wouldn't have been very smart. It's just me, I truly dislike it.

I'm with you. Hearing those two songs on the radio brought me to DUKE, which brought me to Genesis.

In hindsight, especially after over thirty years of rumination, it's easy for a lot of fans to assess merit or criticism, particularly when it comes to certain songs. But overall, Duke, start to finish, is a breath of fresh air in the G catalogue.

Agree with all of this, except: Misunderstanding is a fine song, not classic Genesis by any means, but even so, Man of our times is the first track in need of dropping. Open Door and Evidence would be 2 of the best tracks if included.

Taste, I guess, I don't think all songs on the album are equally strong, MOOT has aged horribly imo but I can still listen to it. I disliked Misunderstanding when I first heard it, Musically I thought it had little to do with the album, the only thing was, as I said, the obvious single value.
It's funny and it is a positive thing some fans have been drawn to the band thanks to this song. I can honestly say, had I heard it on the radio, without knowing anything about the artist, I would have dismissed it completely with no further desire to discover more about the band. As singles go, neutrally speaking, Genesis or less, I really don't believe it was a memorable one, I don't seem to remember it was a top ten song in the US or UK but we should ask the general audience , not Genesis fans.
Again, regardless of what I might think, I am glad it brought new fans to the band.

Definitely a taste thing. Music has to be one of the most subjective things out there. I, for one, ADORE ‘Man Of Our Times’. One of the first hooks “Duke” sank into me. Big fat synths. Quality tune round our way, that one.

when i first listened to 'duke', i was about sixteen years old. i only liked these songs:
- behind the lines, because i had already listened to the 'face value' version. i liked the slower 'duke' version better.
- misunderstanding, because it was pretty simple and accessible.
- turn it on again, because i had already listened to some live recordings of it, though it disappointed me a little how brief the studio version was.
- duke's travels, because it reminded me of other genesis instrumentals.

now i think 'duke' is one of the best genesis albums. my favourite song is duchess, which sounded weird and awful to me at first.
