Man of our times has always been one of my favorite songs from Duke, also. I was surprised, when I read Mike's book, how bad the author slammed the song. I can't remember the way he put it, but that it was basically a failed attempt.

I guess that's why they never played it live sad

I've never liked Man of Our Times. Verses are strong, but the chorus just doesn't work for me.

Overall, not a huge fan of the Duke album. Enjoyable, but it was the first Genesis album I listened to that didn't have a lot of music that was "magical" for me.

I like the intro to Behind the Lines, the song itself doesn't do much for me. Duchess is one of my least favorite Tony Banks songs (I know Tony himself considers it a favorite!). Misunderstanding uses the same riff as Sly & the Family Stone's "Hot Fun in the Summertime". Turn It on Again is a good pop song in an unusual time signature. I like Heathaze and Cul-De-Sac, don't care much for Alone Tonight or Please Don't Ask. Duke's Travels/End is the best thing on the album, IMO, but would be even better without the first 60-90 seconds of the song which has always seemed somewhat pointless to me.

So....you're about to start Abacab huh?....get ready to ask yourself.."Where did all the music go? Horns? What the hell happened to this band?"

As great artists as they were, I always considered them questionable as assessors of their own work.

Aww, don't do that to him wink let him go in with an open mind.

Yes, it's a change in direction, but it also has its merits. smiley

And Mike is known for being opinionated against Smallcreep's Day as well, it looks like he is discontent with the whole episode between Wind & Wuthering and Abacab. undecided

I think the majority of the music on Abacab is decent, but I still find the album overall perfunctory and at times lackadaisical. Even Dodo/Lurker, which is an okay song, lacks magic and warmth. That's the sad thing about Abacab in my opinion. It was a half-hearted effort.

Well considering it was their second consecutive number one album in the UK and was number seven in the U.S. where it reached double platinum status, that's a pretty good half-hearted effort...

wink

Spot on..........although you are not allowed to use record sales arguments in Genesis music threads wink

To be fair Abacab isn't my favourite album, didn't quite work for me. They made up for it though with the brilliance of the three albums that followed cool cool cool

I was surprised and admittedly somewhat disappointed by Abacab on its release - it was a big change for the band. But it is the Genesis album I listen to most these days - great songs and fantastic, warm production. My only complaint is that they didn't include You Might Recall, in my opinion one of their very best songs.

And thatís nothing compared to their assessment of their own legacy:

1973: we wonít release the Shepperton film because it doesnít capture our performance perfectly
1974: we wonít film The Lamb because it wonít be flawless
2014: weíll allow the release of a completely unsatisfactory documentary about us because frankly we donít really care any more....

I'm waiting for Abacab to arrive in the post, but now I'm very intrigued.

Had the band swapped Who Dunnit? for Naminanu, Man On The Corner for You Might Recall, No Reply At All for Paperlate and Another Record for Submarine, I think the album would have been considerably improved. cool
